Unrest is what happens in Venezuela or Yemen, etc.
As Thucydides wrote, the tyranny that the Athenian empire imposed on others it finally imposed on itself. "Unrest" in Latin America is caused by USA's off-the-leash unsupervised services. Venezuela's government is taking better care of its citizens than our government is taking of us, in this current health emergency. This despite the crippling sanctions and attempted coups d'état we've perpetrated against them. Don't believe the war media; I recommend The Grayzone. [0]
Although, of course, for the last year or so not even the war media attempts to defend what we're doing in Yemen.

One of my favourite publications is The Grayzone https://thegrayzone.com/ it helps to remind me that BS such as these https://narratively.com/the-literally-unbelievable-story-of-the-origin… are still being orchestrated by the US today.
In it, they have also reported about the Xinjiang situation, which you can all read here: https://thegrayzone.com/2019/12/21/china-detaining-millions-uyghurs-pr… Since I know that reading is not HN's forte, what basically it says is that there is no solid evidence for what's been reported about Xinjiang, and most of what's reported is basically lies fabricated by one Adrian Zenz. The same Adrian Zenz quoted in this Reuters article. It's really kinda funny what people hold up as evidence these days, no wonder why the world is going against the 'intelligence' from the 5-eye countries.

>Part of me wonders if Karp might just be mocking recent rants by the Trump & Tech Bro's gang.
You haven't been following Palantir in the news in Trump's second term I would wager. This is definitely not the case. If it is, Karp is engaging in a multi-year performance art gimmick.
Palantir and other Big Tech execs were given the rank of Lt. Colonel in the army last year:

You should be puzzled. You should always be puzzled when people say "witnesses told us", "anonymous intelligence officials said". It's what got us into plenty of wars we didn't need to be in. Especially when the authors are known to be in collusion with said intelligence agencies.
> An extraordinary email uncovered under freedom of information laws raises serious questions about whether Bellingcat, the “open source” collective widely cited by mainstream journalists and loved by the CIA, collaborates directly with Western intelligence agencies.

Interesting that it does not bother you that Israel has been indiscriminately bombing civilians BEFORE October 7th as well as engaging in night raids all over the west bank, resulting in one of the deadliest years for Palestinians in the West Bank - again BEFORE October 7th. But somehow, their lives are worth less than the ones tragically lost on October 7th?
Second, as an occupier, there are no internal border. As the United States and Israel do not recognize a Palestinian state, they did not cross a border, they broke out of their concentration camp.
“In the medicolegal assessment of available photos and videos, no tangible indications of rape could be identified,” the report concluded.

Regarding the people that died on October 7, one important detail is evidence surfaced it appears a sizeable fraction was killed due to Israeli military attacking militants and hostages without distinction, to avoid capture, following the so called Hannibal directive:

The GrayZone has been impeccable in their reporting, with any errors quickly being admitted and disclosed. Of course many people disagree with them, and love to try character assassination and other ad hominems, but I've found them informative and having integrity. Maybe you should elaborate your reasoning.
To elaborate further: "Leaked emails reveal British journalist Paul Mason plotting with an intel contractor to destroy The Grayzone through “relentless deplatforming” and a “full nuclear legal” attack. The scheme is part of a wider planned assault on the UK left."

Sure. BBC World Service wiki page describes some of the history/scandals [1]. For example, there has always been a MI5 office inside BBC headquarters. More in depth investigative journalism has been done by Aaron Maté, Max Blumenthal, et al. [2], specifically this article is very damning and caused Twitter to implement a warning label about "potentially hacked materials" (implying they are true) [3]

He's talking about the Azov battalion. From wikipedia:
> Azov Special Operations Detachment is a right-wing extremist and neo-Nazi unit of the National Guard of Ukraine.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Azov_Battalion
Neo-nazis and hard-right nationalists were instrumental in the violent coup of the democratically-elected government in 2014, and have since taken positions in the replacement government.
I recommend this article for more background:

You're correct about Zenz. Not only is Zenz a far right Evangelical but he also has made statements that he is "guided by God" and on a "mission" against China. His work is full of cherry-picking and distorting source material and sometimes creating his own shoddy data. For example, he only interviewed 8 people to come up with the 1 million in internment camp figure.
A good read: https://thegrayzone.com/2021/02/18/us-media-reports-chinese-genocide-r…

Obama has killed more muslims (millions in countries ranging from Yemen to Libya to South Sudan to Syria to.....) than anyone else in the 21st century.
As for the “concern” of Uighurs, it is a funny coincidence that it is from the same crowd who openly advocated genocide in countries ranging from Iraq to (insert country) etc... These are well worth a read at least and you can then make up your mind:

Katherine Maher is someone that was flagged up recently as what we could call "politically interesting". I wonder if that is why it was deemed time for her to move on:
https://thegrayzone.com/2020/06/11/meet-wikipedias-ayn-rand-loving-fou…
While some may object that this is just The Grayzone's biased take on their disagreements with Wikipedia's odd listing of them as not a reliable source it raises some interesting questions.
Seems like the upper echelons of the USA is just as loaded with political operatives as the old East Germany, USSR or China today.
Oh, and I love wikipedia. It is one of the best things to come out of the internet expansion. Even better than the old CIA World Factbook.

I'm sorry, but I'm a real conspiracy theorist on this. Winner was a woman tricked into leaking a story that supported the Russiagate yarn, and part of the team on the Intercept side is clearly a federal agent/independent contractor: https://thegrayzone.com/2020/05/20/the-intercept-reality-winner-richar…
IMO they would have found her no matter what; the reasons they gave for finding her could well be a parallel construction, and they had Esposito as an insider who could "accidentally" out her if all else failed. This was a media operation to leak the standard Russiagate stuff through a Bernie-supporting (biased against Russiagate) peripheral insider and to make a great show of prosecuting her to give the leak more credibility than it would normally be given, from an audience (lefties) that was normally very critical.
It didn't work.

Before anyone takes above comment seriously, do some investigation of your own.
That article is nothing more than a damage control and is completely funded by the "green tech" billionaires. Just look at the history log.
If you want to see how far these """green""" tech billionaires have gone to censor and suppress this documentary and what kinds of legal tricks and other pressure they've used, read Max Blumenthal's article.

Yeah, I definitely think that people in the US needs to learn that the US has been involved in pretty much all brutal regime changes throughout Latin America https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_involvement_in_regime_chan… and reading the grayzone https://thegrayzone.com/ this is definitely still going on today.

You are misrepresenting a couple of isolated cases in the beginning of the war and what looks like fake news as full picture.
Meanwhile in the Ukraine: "According to a July 11 report in Ukrainian media, Ruslan Onishenko, commander of the now-disbanded Tornado Battalion, was freed as part of President Zelensky’s scheme to release prisoners with combat experience. Along with an unwavering commitment to fascism, Onishenko is known as a psychopathic sadist who was involved in sexually assaulting children, brutally torturing prisoners, and murder.
Onishenko’s release follows a February 27 order by Zelensky to free other convicted former Tornado members like Danil “Mujahed” Lyashuk, a fanatic from Belarus who has openly emulated ISIS and boasted of torturing captives for sheer enjoyment. According to Zelensky‘s decree, prisoners with combat experience would be allowed to “compensate for their guilt” by fighting in the “hottest spots.”" [0]

I'm not sure if the account is operated by a single person, and if it is, I'm not interested in "hanging them" for their opinions. This isn't a free speech issue. People go to Wikipedia thinking they're getting neutral information. How many people are aware, when they load some of these pages, like Max Blumenthal's for example, that it's mostly the work of one account hostile to that individual? And in this case, the work of an account that's already been banned for the hostile editing of other people's pages.
If you're interested, compare Max's page before and after Cross got involved with it. You'll see the same pattern we documented in our article. It just gets filled with more and more criticism.
This isn't the same for establishment-friendly voices. Have a look, for example, at the entries for Bellingcat or its founder Eliot Higgins (Bellingcat appears 5 times on Max's page). See how much criticism you find in those entries. Compare with the the articles below[1][2]. One reason of course is that Wikipedia deprecates sources it doesn't approve of, favouring instead "reliable sources" (mostly corporate, establishment-friendly news sites)[3].
Having followed the discussion and arbitration process in 2018, I don't really think anything will change. But I'd like to see more people become aware that what they read on Wikipedia, if it's political, is likely to be very biased and could be the work of nefarious actors.

You're right that I had a high snark:information ratio, there. Effort post incoming.
Here's a cite that goes into detail on the specific claims you've probably read about sterilization practices (partway through): https://thegrayzone.com/2021/02/18/us-media-reports-chinese-genocide-r…
TL:DR; -- Historically, minorities were allowed to have way more kids on paper and the limits were rarely enforced in fact. Since ~2018 there's equality, via raising Han Chinese limits and applying even enforcement, so it's a change and there's some upset about it, but it's the removal of favoritism rather than the imposition of discriminatory measures. It got to even.

As far as who I trust. DC natsec think tanks are absolutely at the bottom of that list on ANY topic, they are guaranteed to be entangled with the military-industrial complex. I trust our actual military more than I do those think tanks. (And the one you chose turns out to be funded by... gulenists??? I did not expect that, frickin wild -- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairfax_University_of_America)
On THIS topic -- the hard evidence points towards internment and mandatory patriot camp, which are bad, but no genocide, slavery or any of those other crazy accusations thrown about. This is.. not great but also exactly what the Chinese government says they're doing. They put out press releases saying, "yeah, it's mandatory job training and harmony camp". Western media are…

I take this issue very serious issue and I've spent a significant amount of time researching it. I think there is a settler-colonial project occurring in Xinjiang, but there are some serious problems with many of the western sources that undermine the credibility of this report.
Report https://14ee1ae3-14ee-4012-91cf-a6a3b7dc3d8b.usrfiles.com/ugd/14ee1a_3…
The evidence for most of these accusations come from Adrian Zenz and ASPI. The report says:
> the works of Dr Zenz, ASPI and similar others would be accorded significant weight and would have probative value in establishing the relevant facts.
Adrian Zenz is the key source for almost all of the genocide claims but I think him and his claims should be scrutinized. The Grayzone did a very critical analysis of Zenz and his claims that is worth exporing if you are actually interested in this subject. https://thegrayzone.com/2021/02/18/us-media-reports-chinese-genocide-r…
I think global attention could help the people of Xinjiang, but not if it’s hijacked by western governments who have an axe to grind with China.

This is well known and documented. It should not be downvoted. Zionism in Big Tech is a huge issue. Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in
the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967, Francesca Albanese documented this extensively in her report that got her sanctioned by the US. [0]

Try earlier than that for the US:

And the federal government knew and participated.

I'm trying to work this out myself. Julian's wiki page has
> He was granted asylum by Ecuador in August 2012[10] on the grounds of political persecution and fears he might be extradited to the United States.[11]
It seems to me like the Trump administration simply mainted the status quo of what came before them. One theory could be the timing of the charges was more aligned with Ecuador changing PM/kicking Assange out of the embassy. https://thegrayzone.com/2019/04/14/lenin-moreno-julian-assange-wikilea…
