This is significant because all previous iOS resources attempting this level of detail have been created by the design community. A designer named Joey Banks created widely adopted UI Kits for iOS 13-16[1]. Earlier iOS resources were created by an agency called Teehan+Lax[2] and some others I’m forgetting now.
All community-created design resources have historically been really good best guesses. Now they’re available directly from Apple.
Apple is letting design teams reveal what’s happening on the inside a little bit and this is one example.

Actually they apparently got acqui-hired by Facebook:
> And Now, For Our Next Act
> We have made a big decision that in 2015, we will join Facebook and the Facebook Design team. This is a significant move for us, professionally and personally.
> We are incredibly excited about the future. The things we will be doing at Facebook are amazing new challenges. The scope and scale of them are simultaneously thrilling and scary. The opportunity to make things that will impact over a billion people is extraordinary.

> "In a lengthy post explaining the move, Teehan+Lax partner Jon Lax explained their motivation for selling to Facebook..."
They are not selling the company, they are closing it, as stated in their own announcement:
"Since we wouldn’t be selling the company but instead several of us taking on specific roles, we needed to go through a process of individual reflection and consideration."
and
"Although, we were ultimately not acquired by Facebook, this framework helped us, and key members of our company, make the decision to join Facebook."

It looks to have been fixed, Just installed the 3.0 trial from their website.
We have been evaluating a number of wireframing tools for iOS development over the last few weeks.
Having only played for 3.0 for 20mins, along with this stencil > http://www.teehanlax.com/tools/iphone-sketch-app/ (just need them to convert to the new Stencil) its pretty good. Best I have found so far.
I was about to start work with Omnigraffle which we had ended up with, but looks like I will be buying Sketch 3.0 end of today if no problems. We also tried Brief (http://giveabrief.com/) which concept wise is amazing but its not ready for prime time yet.
Photoshop was the other way, but unless you are a PS master just slow workflow.

Loved the article, not a fan of the 2.4MB video of hands typing on an Apple keyboard [1] I was forced to download. I'm just glad I wasn't on a mobile connection (tethered or otherwise) with a bandwidth cap.
I searched for methods to disable MP4 video downloading on both Chrome and Firefox, but they don't appear to work (for Firefox, it was about setting media.autoplay.enabled to false). If anyone knows how I would be able to do so, I would appreciate learning how to.

I was prepared to be annoyed that something like this appeared on the front page, but this is a very thorough list of the best Photoshop templates out there for mobile.
teehan+lax always have the best iOS templates (they are included in the 40 free UI PSDs list):

teehan+lax's Android PSD template is definitely worth grabbing too:

Bootstrap is great for what the name implies, but when you are delivering the product to the public, it's not good enough.
The perfect example is iOS apps. Can you imagine your designers simply copying and pasting from iOS's default theme? It's very bland, it turns off users before they even use it (which in effect, is bad UX. Bootstrap has both + and -, good UXer will see this and adjust accordingly/depending on the phase of the product). I use this resource for my wireframe/mockups
http://www.teehanlax.com/blog/iphone-gui-psd-v4/
Personally I won't ever use it in a beta product/website as is.
There's nothing wrong with bootstrapping to map out user flow, and give clear indication a button is a button, a list is a list etc. But when it's time to up your game, give access to the public, default bootstrap visual/color needs to go.
Humans judge a book by its cover. If you release your bootstrap website, users will have to work and over come the barrier of your bland looking site and then decide if it's worth it to try your product.
PS: The point about lawyers have crappy websites and yet we still use them is because our expectations changes depending on the organization. Do we expect government websites to be wow and dazzle us? Do we expect a new Apple product's website to use bootstrap? Do we expect a 2 month old startup website to be featured on Behance's frontpage?
And remember who your early adopters are – if it's people that scours HN or see countless bootstrapped…

Thanks. My go-to test page is http://www.teehanlax.com/story/teehan-lax - trying to screenshot that page in any program I've tried has failed.

> Apple's overwrought, realism aesthetic
Well it's not like you've helped the issue with misleading, blanket statements like this. The problem with iOS/OSX is specific apps e.g. Game Center, Podcasts. The core OS itself is pretty neutral:

In my experience, of the best ways to get started in design is to replicate other people's designs as perfectly as you can, just to get the hang of designing something good.
For example, the other day I recreated the hat icon here: http://hicksdesign.co.uk. This is mine: http://cl.ly/GYHw.
If you make one thing every day, you'll eventually be pretty good at fleshing out your own ideas.

The closest I've found so far is here:
http://www.tapptics.com/
It mostly has resources similar to the Teehan+Lax template (http://www.teehanlax.com/downloads/) - useful to build your own themes, but not usable as out-of-the-box themes. There's only one pre-made iPhone theme on the site right now.
blehn · 2010-06-06
Exactly. Teehan+Lax tested that theory, and while I'd probably disagree with some of their choices, the results are pretty impressive.
