I love it. It's all Dustin Curtis' doing and design. http://dcurt.is/. He created the SVBTL blog network I'm a part of.

Quite similar to this post which appears on HN often: https://dcurt.is/the-best

Wasn't is made by Dustin Curtis? Looks like at least one of his personal sites is down too: https://dcurt.is/

I would like to point out that the tweet and subsequent comments were inflammatory nonsense. Here is the proof https://dcurt.is/apple-card-can-disable-your-icloud-account Maybe we shouldn’t just blindly believe and defend people just because lots of karma and Twitter followers and built a thing. I think these actions make this forum much much worse.

As the author of The Best, I am quite surprised and confused by Rhinehart's suggestion that the piece marks the "death" of Silicon Valley. He does not seem to understand me or what I was saying at all. Also, "my ilk" are the very people he praises, including Paul Graham and YC founders pre-2012. I'm tempted to write a rebuttal, because while I agree that there was a marked change in the startup community around that time, I think it happened for reasons very different from the ones Rhinehart outlines in his piece. (For reference: https://dcurt.is/the-best )

I think when it comes to superlatives and this particular author, he hit somewhere very close to the theoretical maximum a while back and it's still public and helpfully labeled. https://dcurt.is/the-best Although if someone has invented a mouthfeelier fork in the meantime and Curtis has written about it, I'd like to read that piece as well.
bshimmin · 2016-10-18
There's a hilariously ridiculous piece from Dustin Curtis that mixes this minimalist approach with "only having the best of everything": https://dcurt.is/the-best I quite like to imagine him having a few people over for dinner: "Oh, sorry, I'm afraid my indescribably perfect Japanese flatware costs $8,000 for a fork so I could only buy two. The rest of you can just use your hands, but you're welcome to admire my fork for a moment if you wish to..."

I enjoyed every single essay from Dustine Curtis of Svbtle https://dcurt.is/

elon = grit, as an entrepreneur when i have dark times, i'll read about him to get amped. my favorite quote: "Optimism, pessimism, fuck that; we’re going to make it happen. As God is my bloody witness, I’m hell-bent on making it work." -- back in 2008 after the SpaceX Falcon rocket failed to make orbit 3 times. More context: http://dcurt.is/elon-musks-determination

"Looking so dorky" is actually fairly low on the list of ways in which Google Glass fails to be a usable product. Dustin Curtis wrote an excellent review in which he discusses these more serious problems: http://dcurt.is/glass

Maybe it's because Dustin is a wannabe elitist who thinks he knows better than everyone else. Proof #1 http://dcurt.is/3-point-5-inches Proof #2 "Until now, we’ve been an exclusive platform open only to approved users. We took this initial approach because we wanted to ensure that the software worked, first of all, and that the platform was seeded with great content by seasoned and experienced authors."

EDIT I'll leave my post as two people were kind enough to point out that I was just flat out wrong. I had originally thought that the below post was a parody. I'm told it wasn't, though in my defense it definitely reads like a parody... I mean the perfect cutlery... the most meaningless item in anyone's house?? This reminds me of another parody post here a while ago about someone who said they'd bought the perfect cutlery. They went a bit further and beat the joke to death talking about the difference between several cutlery sets. It was bit better because it started out with some good points bout optimizing your life and buying the best and then it jumped into how to buy what is probably the least important thing in anyone life...cutlery I think this hacking your life is starting to jump the shark:) Here is the other parody post: http://dcurt.is/the-best

Point #1 is a recent lesson learned for me. I remember seeing Robert De Niro on Inside The Actor's Studio saying essentially the same thing. He can't tell anymore while filming a movie how good it will be based on how the shoot is going, since he's been on well-run productions that flopped and chaotic stressful ones that came out great. Now he just concentrates on giving a great performance no matter what and doing a lot of work. Also: http://dcurt.is/what-a-stupid-idea

This is simply a vehicle for the author to show off about how he was consulted by well-known startups before they were big. These articles by dcurtis are a very ugly portrait of San Francisco tech culture. For example it beggars belief that this one was not written as a parody: http://dcurt.is/the-best

Why after months of research, stringent requirements for data centers, and general hand-wringing, would you consciously pull the plug for 9 minutes? Edit: That sounds snarky; didn't mean to be. It just struck me that a lot of energy was put into choosing The Best[1] data center and still there was down time. [1] http://dcurt.is/the-best

>Apple’s products are opinionated. They say, “We know what’s best for you. Here it is. Oh, that thing you want to do? We won’t let you do that because it would suck. Trust us. If you don’t like it, there’s the door.” Problem is, Apple's acolytes won't leave you alone to go through the door - they'll follow you and keep telling you you're a wrong for wanting something different or thinking different (the irony is always lost). Some of them will even write long and detailed blog posts about how 3.5" is the perfect screen size, and and if you think differently, you're wrong. (http://dcurt.is/3-point-5-inches), or maintain popular blogs which a little more than a large collection of stupid, snide remarks (Gruber).

Props for the URL - http://dcurt.is/the-best My bet is he dreamed up the title and then wrote an entire meaningless post just to sneak it in. Y'all just been trolled good.

Indeed, the wordpress theme's author is not operating in the way he alludes to in that quote. Svbtle is actually inspired by the design of Drawar; it is easy to see the root ideas, but it's also plain to see the changes and evolution of Svbtle that make it distinct from Drawar. Contrast this with the WP theme and an actual Svtle blog: Svbtle: http://dcurt.is/ Svbtle WP: http://www.lylemckeany.com/ If you alt-tab between the two, most of the page is exactly the same. The Svbtle-WP theme is not "inspired" by Svbtle, it is a direct copy.

Apple and Microsoft worked on arbitrary resolution independence for years. It's nearly impossible to make it work right because things look blurry unless you redo everything as vector graphics and even that isn't perfect. [1] (Appropriate hardware wasn't available, so their failure kinda didn't matter.) Then Apple decided to just double everything in iOS, which made things tractable enough. OS X is mostly following the same approach, although there is a compromise mode where the screen is rendered at 2x resolution and then scaled down to fit the LCD. This was a good write-up of an interview with the HBO co-CEO: http://dcurt.is/hbo-forbes-journalism Worth reading before spouting the typical "I don't understand why HBO doesn't want my $5 a month."

Looks like it's the platform/network that Dustin Curtis has been using for his own blog (http://dcurt.is) and is finally opening up to other authors, albeit slowly.

OP said something similar about writing blog posts when he found himself doing twitter a lot, back in 2013. So whatever he did to cope with tweeting, he can do the same with LLMs, since it seems like he's been writing a lot of blog posts since. > I’ve been thinking about this damn essay for about a year, but I haven’t written it because Twitter is so much easier than writing, and I have been enormously tempted to just tweet it, so instead of not writing anything, I’m just going to write about what I would have written if Twitter didn’t destroy my desire to write by making things so easy to share. and > But here’s the worst thing about Twitter, and the thing that may have permanently destroyed my mind: I find myself walking down the street, and every fucking thing I think about, I also think, “How could I fit that into a tweet that lots of people would favorite or retweet?” https://dcurt.is/what-i-would-have-written

Here's the gist of the original piece (from 2014): > Apple is going to realize very soon that it has made a grave mistake by positioning itself as a bastion of privacy against Google, the evil invader of everyone’s secrets. The truth is that collecting information about people allows you to make significantly better products, and the more information you collect, the better products you can build. ... https://dcurt.is/privacy-vs-user-experience How the times change. Not a whiff of Facebook. Snowden who? Google was still mostly not evil. From the more recent article: > I argued in my essay that Tim Cook had conflated privacy with security. He may have. But in the five years since 2014, the following fact has become absurdly clear to me: there is no difference between privacy and security. Security is an illusion, just like the lock on your front door. ... In time we'll all come to realize that privacy is merely a special case of security. What can't be seen can't be attacked. Until then, a lot of damage will have been wrought on people too distracted or naive to care.

I've written before on this very topic - not building your house / business on other people's platform. That said, I think there's a real opportunity for Twitter to grow via third party apps by being more open, they just haven't straddled the line of being both a consumer app and infrastructure company well previously. I agree massively with lots of what Dustin Curtis has previously written about his vision for the platform: "Twitter has turned into a place where famous people and news organizations broadcast text. That’s it. Nothing great is Built On Twitter, even though it should be the most powerful realtime communications platform on Earth. There are simply no developer integration features for building stuff on top of Twitter as a platform, and that is absurd and disappointing. The fact that automatic tweets from apps are considered rude is one of the biggest failings of Twitter’s product team–Twitter should be the place for apps to broadcast realtime information about someone. And yet the culture around the Twitter community has effectively banned such behavior because the product doesn’t have features to filter/organize such notifications." http://dcurt.is/twitter They want the (hobbyist? / fun) apps yet, when something sizable comes along, the don't want someone else to run away with the ball. Coming out and saying to smaller indie developers now "If you build something decent, we'll take some revenue" I don't think would placate many. It may have been a decent…
