Due to anecdotal experience, I will never go back to anything that has their format without the ability to let my notes be or be exported. I was an early Evernote[1] user and Prime/Pro subscribe for quite many years. We even used it for team collaboration on documents. Unfortunately, I had to leave it like everyone else and have gone all plain-text (sometimes, spiced with MarkDown here and there when needed). Now, any tool should be a wrapper on top and should leave no damaging changes -- the best I found so far being Obsidian[2]. I tested/tried OneNote long back and doing a quick search says you can export[3] the whole at one go to a Word format. This should, then work macOS -- export to Word Format and Pandoc. 1. https://evernote.com 2. https://obsidian.md 3. https://www.thewindowsclub.com/export-onenote-files-different-formats

If you don't have a problem with commercial software, you'll probably find Evernote [1] a great improvement on Tomboy. [1] http://evernote.com

Neat, straightforward idea management. http://www.kindlingapp.com/ Iphone feature, bit more commercial. http://www.ideascale.com/ And of course probably the best option: http://www.evernote.com/

Evernote works great. It syncs to a web client which then syncs to native clients which are available on Mac, iPhone, and Windows. Not as fast as Simplenote appears to be, but excellent nonetheless. Has saved me in a datacenter without my laptop many a time. http://evernote.com/

I'm surprised by how often questions like this come up, but I always find the responses interesting and educational. * What I Want * Non-negotiable items include: - Low Friction: A little initial setup is ok, but just taking a note should require no more than a click or two (whether clicking a mouse or a pen). - Open source. - Aesthetically Pleasing: I'm tired of looking at ugly stuff. - Has to handle LaTex. - Has to handle syntax highlighted code listings. - Notes are in an easily portable format. - Organization Tools: Some sort of organizational ability. I have thousands of notes that I use and need to refer back to all the time. - Privacy: No sending my personal information to someone else's server. Negotiable: - Mobile Friendly: My eyesight isn't good enough to use a phone for note-taking or reading. Tablets are Ok. Desktop is best for me. - Implementation Language: Since I'm looking for an open source solution, I'd like it to be in a language that I like. In my case, Clojure/ClojureScript, Lisp, Scheme (Racket) would be optimal. JavaScript is least desired. - Minimal dependencies: I'd prefer that it not be based on Node, NPM, Electron, Atom, or any other huge ecosystem that would have to be installed on my system. (Java is Ok with me, obviously.) Scriptability: It would be nice if it could help automate my workflow. * What I Have Tried * - Long ago (2005) I started a job at which the company provided me with a stylus-based, Windows tablet PC. Included was a copy…

One thing that this is [seemingly] missing is the ability to drag from the preview to basically anyway. I love how Skitch[1] lets me do that, saving the step of having to save it to disk. [1] https://evernote.com/products/skitch

I'm an Evernote user and have been worried recently about the direction things were going. Features moving from free to paid and such. I take many notes on the app and have years of jottings - I would hate to get trapped in a corner. This new CEO sounds reassuring (https://evernote.com/blog/looking-ahead-evernotes-priorities-2019/). Like he's got his head screwed on, and wants to build a great productivity app and a profitable, sustainable company - not be "the Nike of your mind" (sheesh).

One of the well-known note taking apps is Evernote. You can look at their site to see what it does: https://evernote.com

I kind of love that Reddit has gone all in and just made it an actual hamburger icon in their redesign: https://www.evernote.com/l/AALYMDHabuxLvLSKPlM6fMyCozTZysM2aNQ

Workflowy (https://workflowy.com) - diaries, projects, brainstorming, someday/maybe idea storage. Evernote (https://evernote.com) - a store-and-forget tool for information of any kind that I might need at some point. Matterlist (https://matterlist.com) - to-do lists, recurring tasks, calendar. (Full disclosure: it's my own Wunderlist alternative, currently in alpha testing.)

I've been "coding" full-time for two years now and I use Windows as primary operating system, the biggest issue/pains that I've experienced is: 1) Most of the tutorials online are written for linux 2) installing dependencies on windows is a bitch sometimes (75% of time I can get stuff to work on windows other times I give up because of lack of availability of certain packages and compiling issues). It's my opinion that you will eventually need to learn how to operate in linux, so what I'd recommend you do to help with learning: - Install Hyper-V if you have Windows Professional, this way you can install various linux distros (start with ubuntu, then debian, then centos possibly). - install Bash for Windows - install docker for windows http://www.evernote.com/l/AUkyLCQy0YJFQYIxEsVqV1nD1fUEpd4Uqfg/ ^ how to turn on hyper-v and bash for ubuntu on windows

Nice work! I have struggled with the same problem after creating several thousands of notes in Evernote. I took a different approach though, somewhat following the process described here: https://blog.evernote.com/blog/2015/12/11/evernote-and-the-brain-desig…

I have been using nvAlt[1] for the past 3-4 years. It is well designed and it is easy to use. All the notes are in text format and can be synced via dropbox (so you can pick up these notes in mobile). I use Evernote[2] to store notes with images. [1]: http://brettterpstra.com/projects/nvalt/. That was a surprisingly frustrating article to read. It kept repeating the exact same things just worded slightly differently over and over again, like the four or five times it mentions machine learning being a major part of Evernote's decision to go with Google, without ever explaining what, exactly, that machine learning would be. The whole thing reads like a press release targeted at an audience that doesn't know anything about the actual mechanics of cloud computing. Edit: Fortunately Evernote have published a great five-part series on their blog[1] which goes into much greater detail about the transition to GCS, although there's still no explanation of how machine learning fits into their future plans. I am giving a talk on this in January internally: Make SSR Great Again - "Swinging the pendulum back to server-side rendering" https://www.evernote.com/shard/s17/sh/08a3fdd5-7ff7-40ea-b2d4-95ccb54d…

You can opt-out of the machine learning features (which use manual human review) in your account settings at https://www.evernote.com/PersonalSettings.action. You cannot opt-out of allowing staff to read your notes altogether, but you can export your data and move to another service. If you don't need OCR and are on Mac/iOS, I have found Bear to be a great note-taking alternative to Evernote. http://www.bear-writer.com/ It includes Markdown support, code syntax highlighting (for some languages), and Evernote migration: http://www.bear-writer.com/faq/Code%20Snippets/Show%20code%20highlight… http://www.bear-writer.com/faq/Import/Migrate%20from%20Evernote/

I use https://www.evernote.com Allows you group notes and add tags, all I need. The free version allows installation/use on two devices - phone and chrome for me. It has two-factor authentication which is a plus. Some folks don't like the new web ui, it doesn't bother me enough to jump ship, because while I use it regularly (the mobile app) I don't have complex requirements, just note taking, tagging. I can do that whenever inspiration strikes me and then come back and flesh out the idea when I'm at my laptop.
I'm so happy with this thing that you've made! It's displaced my todo-list as my chrome new-tab. I live on the east coast of Australia - pretty much on the centreline of the field of view, and it's so cool to see our planet from my point of view in real time - really makes me feel like I'm living on a rock flying through space at great speed! It's late in the evening here - this is the image right now: https://www.evernote.com/l/AJwr2IhgBtlHJrQS_ksivwvaYtahS01IOrU thanks :)

As well as readability (mentioned above), I find Evernote's Clearly to be a great extension for reading anything on the web (medium.com tends to be notorious to read)... https://evernote.com/clearly/ Note that you don't need a evernote account to use this (I don't, and it just works).

SQL should be fine with sharding. Evernote has actually a great article on how they sped up their sync by rethinking the sharding. http://blog.evernote.com/tech/2014/01/28/synchronization-speedupificat…

How would you convince me to put yet another app on my phone, as opposed to just jotting this down in Evernote[1]? What advantage does your app have over Quotebook[2]? Good looking app! [1] http://evernote.com [2] http://quotebookapp.com/

Probably the best article on security I've ever seen come up on Hacker News. I would take the security@ recommendation and move it up a few notches though. It costs nothing and you get tremendous benefit if someone is trying to tell you something. And the irony about Evernote being hacked (http://evernote.com/corp/news/password_reset.php)... I'm surprised they were even able to find the compromise and prepare a coordinated response. Who knows, maybe this event is what caused the CTO to see the light? Learn from other's mistakes, people.

I've been using Evernote Clearly for a while, which is easily the best extension for this in Chrome. http://evernote.com/clearly/

> ...This is interesting point. It is coming from "everyhour". What difficulties you think we could face? IANAL but... If it's coming from "every hour" then go with that. You reference the Evernote inspiration in your description above, the tagline on the site is "Evernote for time", etc. Saying 'it's evernote for time' is great for elevator pitches, less so for product wording. But because the product is called "Everhour", I'd either a) start looking for a new name or b) pretend (at least in public) that I never even heard of Evernote. If not, at best you'd be labeled as a copycat, at worst, face some legal issues for encroaching on their trademark[1]. [1] http://evernote.com/trademark/

Completely agree! I actually tried it out with one of our pictures [1] from my proposal in Rome. I'm just having a bit of trouble with the small tuft of her hair that's forcing the algorithm to keep some of the background. I suppose I could probably fix this by using the full resolution picture, instead of this scaled down one. I'll be recommending this to many people! Just an interesting tidbit I noticed: I received several of these mails from Evernote, as I have multiple accounts (including some I set up for others). Up until about 28 hours ago (4AM March 3 in Japan), all the embedded links were the bogus, phishing-esque URLs that the OP complains about. As of 22 hours ago (10AM March 3 in Japan), the emails look the same, but all the links point to http://evernote.com. So at least somebody at Evernote did notice (or read this post or respond to similar complaints), and correct the situation in the middle of their 50,000,000-user email campaign.
