Anyone remembers Dan Cederholm (http://www.simplebits.com/) and his excellent books "Web Standards Solutions" and "Bulletproof Web Design"? He even had a series of exercises like this on his blog. Oh, the gone days of the web which was a web and not some misfit wannabe app engine :(

I'd recommend SimpleBits's (http://www.simplebits.com/) own books and their reading list at http://astore.amazon.com/simplebits-20.

I remember this from way back in the 00's as part of the Web 2.0/semantic web era. I was a big fan of Dan Cederholm's design work (https://simplebits.com - he did the design for the site). I do like the principle of trying to use semantic html, but I don't think that things like this ever got the kind of mass adoption that would give them staying power. Still a nice nostalgia trip to see it here.

Content is king? I'm reminded of Dan Cederholm's favourite website [1]. [1] http://simplebits.com/notebook/2013/02/16/food-for-thought/

There are many CSS books that give concrete examples of various layout types that work in all browsers. Dan Cederholm wrote one of the best: http://simplebits.com/publications/bulletproof/

I am, in fact, particularly proud of that. 3.5% of my (compressed) CSS is devoted to using the best available ampersand. http://simplebits.com/notebook/2008/08/14/ampersands.html

Dan Cenderholm's "Bulletproof Web Design" is a must read. http://www.simplebits.com/publications/bulletproof

Um, did Dan Cederholm http://simplebits.com design this? Because if not, well, you stole his design http://corkd.com/ bud.

Speech recognition is pattern recognition. Computers are inefficient and relatively limited in their capacity to discern relevant data from complex data sets when the size of these sets begins to soar exponentially. That's why weather prediction in many areas isn't worth much more than a week. Consider how well the human brain can synthesize disparate data in the relatively simple form of sentences with scrambled word spellings. Add to this, the nearly infinite combinations of vocabulary, grammar, voice tone and context of speech and we can begin to see the scale of the task of matching with programs and algorithms, what the human mind does unconsciously in real time with a high degree of accuracy. http://simplebits.com/notebook/2004/01/16/mipellssed-wdors/ Mipellssed Wdors Posted on January 16th, 2004 at 1:44 pm Aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn’t mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoetnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer be at the rghit pclae. Among the alternatives listed is Behance -last time I checked this network was owned and operated by Adobe. btw, the stopusinglinkedin.com site links to behance.com which does not exist. It's behance.net Dribbble (the other design resource listed) I understand was co-founded by designer Dan Cederholm, but oddly if you visit his current Wikipedia page there's no mention of his involvement with Dribbble -only on his SimpleBits bio page: http://simplebits.com/about/

Really? What kind of icons are you talking about? From the article ( http://simplebits.com/notebook/2004/08/23/anatomy.html ) written by a professional, I understood that creating an icon is a difficult process and you need a specialized tool. [e.g. You need to have two views - Zoomed in, Zoomed out] And I doubt you can create an icon in less than 30 seconds. [Total time taken to download Paint.NET from http://www.dotpdn.com/files/Paint.NET.3.36.zip and install.]

Dan Cederholm is a high-quality designer with great jumpstart material. Namely, his books "Bulletproof Web Design" (http://www.simplebits.com/publications/bulletproof/), and "Web Standards Solutions" (http://www.simplebits.com/publications/solutions/). If you can afford the time and expense, a one-day Carson Workshop from a CSS master can help a lot. This one is already past, but for example: http://carsonworkshops.com/design-dev/clarke/14May2008.html For off-the-web inspiration, study Edward Tufte (http://www.edwardtufte.com), architecture (for example, Christopher Alexander: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_Alexander), and cartography (peruse a great atlas like The Atlas of Oregon: http://geography.uoregon.edu/infographics/projects/atlasPrint.htm).

Start with CSS tutorials (box model etc): http://www.w3schools.com/css/default.asp http://www.html.net/tutorials/css/ and then move to these two books: http://www.zeldman.com/dwws/ http://www.simplebits.com/publications/bulletproof/ And you should know more than web designers that charge a ton of money to develop table-based sites.
