I'm talking general run way, not Dropbox.
If you can cut your costs efficiently, you should, regardless of who you are.
I am not saying you should rely on native standards without innovating, I am saying a developer is a better person to make those decisions where you wanna tweak design that might be hellish in code than a designer.
I like developers who can design. Period. Especially iOS where the damn controllers are called -VIEW-Controllers.
If you're a startup, get a iOS developer who can design. It's cheaper, it's smarter. It's better.
Less person to maintain, less communication errors and those thing happen because we're human.
It's one of the platforms where the developer SHOULD be able to design and rightfully do so.
I've never come to respect designers for iOS (I can't speak for Android, but I wonder if it's the same). One trick ponies.
If you can't code your views, then get a different job. I am sure there are developers who can design and then code it.

Don't get those oil snakes men that trick you into thinking their bullshit user interface design education is worth anything.
The only objective UX is speed, and that comes from the developer.
Most of the time UX (and design) is subjective. Sure you have bad ones, and good ones, but in the end it's mostly a matter of taste. Get a developer who has taste.
Most developers are also "app users", so they should be aware of what works and what doesn't and can work in their own "smart"…

That's good advice.
Another one is to put yourself in the user's shoes and then lean in to your own laziness in order to come up with a UI that will delight the average user.
Also, in the beginning don't worry too much about the difficulty of implementing your ideas. You won't come up with anything new if you are always thinking "that's too hard" or "that will take too long." You can always scale back your ambition at a later time, but it's important to be excited about your ideas.
There are a few sites that follow this philosophy:

Edit:
Oh, and start prototyping the flow way before finalizing colors and so on. This is a great tool for it: https://principleformac.com/

The buttons with numbers in his example are such.
There's still the question of whether fixing it is worth it or not though...

There's some odd execution-level details I noticed also: all the big grey buttons for downloads look pre-pressed because they use a dark-to-light gradient which makes them look beveled in. In case the designers have never actually seen a physical button in real life before, buttons pop out and need a light-to-dark gradient indicating that light is hitting the top of the button.
I wrote a blog entry on this topic awhile back: http://flyosity.com/design/making-rounded-rectangles-look-great.php

I'm not a good designer but i've been improving for years mostly by putting in my hours. Aside from learning some basic photoshop skills, the best piece of advice I can give you is to read and re-read this article: http://flyosity.com/tutorial/crafting-subtle-realistic-user-interfaces…
Note the word subtle. That's the key.

Some of the heinz bottles have a small relief in the top of the cap, kinda like this:

That's why it appears in the scan.

OK thanks, fair enough. I had thought he was responding to the latest one that made the rounds here - http://flyosity.com/application-design/if-you-can-think-design-code-yo…
Seems he wasn't though.

Dude, I learned so much from this one blog post of yours: http://flyosity.com/tutorial/crafting-subtle-realistic-user-interfaces…
I will definitely be grabbing some of those tutorials this Summer :)

This was on HN a while back, and I thought it was a good summary. It doesn't hold your hand on how to actually achieve the effects but it gets you started:

Beautiful graphic design is something I'd like to learn, and it is something I have not invested much effort in yet. Tutorials like those on SmashingMagazine can tell you the how but can't teach you the why. Any graphic designer/art student will tell you that learning how to draw is all about learning how to look. I'd like to be able to do design myself but realistically it is easier to become friends with good designers (yes, you pay them but it is more like working with a partner than a hired gun). In lieu of taking classes, go to art openings. I've met very few designer developer individuals.
That being said here is a list of some resources for (previous AskYCs, rest of them learning how to make icons) (which is a stepping stone to Tap Tap Tap UI).
