> Why is that? Isn't that a question the New York Times should have been answering? I will admit that I haven't been following the Burisma scandal that closely, but the following post [1] provides sufficient evidence to me to believe that it hasn't been reported accurately in the USA. The answer to this is 'geopolitics' which is basically unknowable to schmucks like us, but you can read the conjecture of people who follow it and see if it makes sense to you: https://www.moonofalabama.org/2018/11/if-saudi-oil-no-longer-matters-w…

One only needs to apply basic game theory and skepticism to come to the conclusion that Assad has no incentives to gas citizens. He's winning the war! On the other hand who would benefit from a gas attack? Obviously, the "rebels" (read islamists). They have been losing ground for the past two years and if the US pulled out (which was planned) and a peace settlement is reached then they would lose. Now consider that the exact same sequence of events happened almost exactly the same time last year -- the US announced that "regime change is no longer a priority" and a few days later we saw reports of a gas attack. See http://www.moonofalabama.org/2018/04/timelines-of-gas-attacks-in-syria… For the game theory see: http://econlog.econlib.org/archives/2018/04/from_game_theor.html

While the cause is just, I'm not sure I want to sign an Avaaz petition. After all, they are also a (political) lobby, with its own, somewhat questionable, agendas, not a grassroots movement in any way. I also seriously doubt that a petition is better than US citizens calling their representatives, as was recommended during the last struggle. > You're saying that Swiss-based Protonmail is worse for privacy than Australian-based fastmail? I'm claiming that neither of them are good for privacy. As a sibling wrote so well: "encrypted email just isn’t a thing. The minute you send a message to someone else it’s out in the wild." I have zero interest in my email being encrypted or protected or anonymous. So ProtonMail's value proposition is meaningless to me. But the fact that ProtonMail masquerades and markets their email as private and encrypted is the problem. They're subject to subpoenas, just like everyone else, and if they are going to market their service as private, encrypted, or anonymous, then they are misleading at best and lying at worst: https://techcrunch.com/2021/09/06/protonmail-logged-ip-address-of-fren… https://www.moonofalabama.org/2021/05/how-protonmail-lost-the-public-t… https://www.reddit.com/r/ProtonVPN/comments/8ww4h2/comment/e21tfqw/ Lots of other interesting dirt if you do some basic google searches. So I chose Fastmail because of their honesty. I know what I'm getting. Their prices are great, apps are great, web interface is great. They've been around since 1999 -- longer than Gmail. I used their free tier first then moved to paid with a custom name some time ago. Clearly they're not going anywhere. I'm not sure what else you can ask for in an email provider?

Sorry for the confusing post, I'm digging into the details and what I said is basically what Kim Dot Com said around a week ago: https://twitter.com/KimDotcom/status/1649574074732154880 > False claim 6: Dotcom claimed that he worked with Seth Rich. > Truth: Seth Rich contacted me and offered information about the DNC. I rejected receiving the data personally and forwarded him to someone close to Wikileaks. That’s how Wikileaks got the DNC and Hillary Clinton leaks. No. Yes, he is generally what I would consider "anti-US" but Media Bias Fact Check reports no failed fact check in last 5 years. Also, before people label him as "left-wing", he was a very strong supporter of Kyle Rittenhouse from the beginning (even supposedly good sources like The Intercept lamented the acquittal). I have linked to his article on the day of the verdict below. https://www.moonofalabama.org/2021/11/kyle-rittenhouse-is-not-guilty.h…

https://www.moonofalabama.org/2017/11/turning-the-corner-in-afghanista… - The Friedman Unit, or simply Friedman,[1] is a tongue-in-cheek neologism. One Friedman Unit is equal to six months,[2] specifically the "next six months", a period repeatedly declared by New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman to be the most critical of the then-ongoing Iraq War[3] even though such pronouncements extended back over two and a half years. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friedman_Unit

It's interesting that instead of posting the report itself, or even a detailed article that criticizes the report, the top article on HN is a bland summary of an accusation from a third party with no direct quotes or attribution. It's basically a press release. The only article that I can find that actually tries to levy complaints of obstruction is this one from the NYT[0]. However, several of the WHO investigators quoted have gone on Twitter accusing the NYT of twisting their words[1]. Makes me pretty doubtful that there was any obstruction. On one side we have a country with half a million cases that has since December been accusing China with "coverups" without materializing much evidence, despite document leaks and now an international investigation. On the other side we have a country with orders of magnitude fewer total and per capita cases, whose case demographics have matched up with numbers from other countries, and whose export numbers in neighboring countries has also been consistent with their reported numbers. At this point if there was some sort of obstruction or coverup the Whitehouse would have a smoking gun by now. Other comments here talking about the "lab origin" theory pretty much hinge on theological logic. "Well it could come from a lab, and there's no proof yet that it didn't, so I have faith". It isn't Bayesian reasoning if you don't bring up rigorous statistics to prove your point. [0]…

What is more worrying for Boeing is that a SW fix might not be that easy to implement. According to that article [0], the fix is running too slowly on the Flight Control Computers, that are based on a 80286 architecture. I am not sure how reliable this info is, and that should not be surprising given the cost of verification or certification of an aircraft, but I am still surprised that a 2019 plane, has still some HW and SW from the 1980ies. Edit : There are actually more details in Wikipedia [1] >In June 2019, "in a special Boeing simulator that is designed for engineering reviews"[75], FAA pilots performed a stress testing scenario – an abnormal condition identified through FMEA after the MCAS update was implemented[76] – for evaluating the effect of a fault in a microprocessor: as expected from the scenario, the horizontal stabilizer pointed the nose downward. Although the test pilot ultimately recovered control, the system was slow to respond to the proper runaway stabilizer checklist steps, due to an 80286[77] microprocessor being overwhelmed with data. The FAA characterized the slow responsiveness as "catastrophic", whereas Boeing initially classified it as "major". The solution appears to consist in rerouting data across multiple chips. Boeing stated that the issue can be fixed in software.[78] The software change will not be ready for evaluation until at least September 2019.[79] Boeing also said that it agreed with additional requirements that the FAA required…

Saudi Arabia's artificial famine in Yemen has been subject to a worldwide media blockade for well over a year.[1][2] This has taken the shape of systematic under-reporting, preposterously low accounts of the death toll - usually treating the hundred of millions of children dead from famine as collateral damage, or avoiding the subject entirely - whitewashing of the motivations of the conflict and obscuring of its trajectory. As Gary Brecher pointed out earlier this year, it's not that these stories don't sell. Mainstream news media was rife with accounts of starvation in war-torn Syria in years past: > But the hundreds of thousands of verified, real famine and epidemic cases in Yemen get very little coverage. There’s nothing subtle about why not. The Syrian Sunni jihadis were de facto allies of the US/UK/Saudi/Israel/UAE bloc. So their suffering needed to be amplified. The Shia Yemenis can be slandered with one word: “Iran.” Anything touched by Iran, for Anglo media, is inherently evil, and anything done to those so tainted needs no further justification. The “Houthi,” i.e. the Shia of NW Yemen, are allegedly puppets or proxies for Iran, the Shia Mister Big of journalistic imagination, and therefore legitimate targets for even the nastiest war of extermination (such as by hunger and disease). Now, at this late date, we have the New York Times's first real reckoning with Saudi Arabia's crimes. Not only that: there's meta-reporting on the story's traffic on Facebook[3], a…

this sounds odd. other reports said that the final landing for these drones is done with a local, direct link (which was a possible candidate for how it was hacked), but this article implies (if i am reading it right) that by faking GPS it was misled into thinking it was landing in its normal place. also, in the linked article it says that the underbelly was damaged because the altitudes differed by a few metres, but gps doesn't offer that kind of vertical resolution (as far as i know, particularly not from something that cannot sit in one place and integrate over time. this is (partly) why GPS is not used for landing - it's simply not precise enough). perhaps the gps was spoofed, but it was only part of something more complex? like enabling the radio control for landing because the drone thought it was near the airfield? [edit] this seems to be the original source that mentions direct landing control, although i've never seen that site before (am pretty sure i read it on the bbc or guardian): http://www.moonofalabama.org/2011/12/how-iran-probably-acquired-a-stea…

I cannot access the link right now but many of the stories trumpeted by Western and Saudi-backed media highlighting Syrian regime's brutality have turned out to be fake (or worse, some massacres blamed on regime were actually carried out by CIA-sponsored armed Syrian "rebels"). So US-sponsored Israeli terrorists bombing Palestinian women and children will also make it to hacker news top page? Syria's tyrant is not a US-sponsored one so we must highlight his brutality? How about US-sponsored Egyptian, Yemeni, Bahraini and other butchers? I don't remember seeing anything about their misery making it to the first page of Hacker News.
