You're right that the US was holding out while other regions got price increeases. But this is actually the 2nd US price increase in 12 months. This is the increase from August: https://blog.playstation.com/2025/08/20/playstation-5-price-changes-in…
Nintendo much be in an especially hard place. They just released their new generation of consoles, but from what I hear holiday sales did "fine". Not great, fine. So they definitely don't want to stunt their entire generation by raisig their prices in the first year while they are already worried about hardware sales. Maybe that's a part of why they recently reported the price differences between physical and digital games.

> whatever Sony's version of Gamepass is called
Just mentioning that it's PS Plus, and the game was made available on their Extra & Premium tiers at launch [0], which is nice, as they typically release all the games on the same day in the middle of the month.

P.S. "Lost Records: Bloom & Rage", the second half of which is due to come out in a couple of days is very different, but highly recommended too, especially in its emotional vibes and how well they integrated the VHS camera into the gameplay.

Not a remake: a PvP "extraction" shooter, which is apparently a term that means something to folks who like to play FPS games online. I, on the other hand, love offline, atmospheric FPS games with deep lore, like the Marathon games I grew up playing on my family's Performa 6115.

The Getaway came close on PlayStation 2 back in 2002. Gameplay wasn't great, but it featured a very realistic (in its time) rendering of 10 sq miles of central London.

Edit : it might also be a great way to "hide" an account once it's been acquired. Just pay $5 to rename it once you've removed all the friends.

Aside from freeing up space used by my growing collection of older consoles, I'm not convinced full backwards compatibility for PS3 and earlier games should be a hard requirement for PS5. However, all of my older games are physical purchases and I've only recently been blessed with a fast enough home connection to make downloading games practical.
If there is enough demand, I hope that it will be possible to add PS5 support for emulating older downloadable games purchased from the PlayStation Store.
I'm personally more inclined to pay (again) for a quality remastered version on a next gen console. I've enjoyed replaying some of the PS4 remastered games with higher definition graphics (Last of Us, God of War 3, CoD: Modern Warfare, Uncharted Collection, ...) and I still aim for Platinum trophies for my favourites.
Sony has also said "We believe that the overwhelming majority of the 4,000+ PS4 titles will be playable on PS5" (https://blog.us.playstation.com/2020/03/18/unveiling-new-details-of-pl… which hopefully covers most of the games I've bought in the last 6 or so years.

Indeed. It's not quite as cheap as steam (75% off), but if you keep your subscription up you'll get a bunch of free games that puts the subscription into "great deal" territory.
I was on the fence about it for a long time, but after the second time my console died and lost all my game saves, I wanted the cloud save feature. It ends up that since I bought the PS Plus subscription, I actually haven't bought any games. I'm a infrequent gamer - I play games, but not every day. My back catalog of good games is pretty big, so there's a lot of good stuff that comes through the freebie channel.
http://blog.us.playstation.com/2013/06/10/playstation-plus-e3-2013-sal… If you scroll down you see the discounts on purchases.
This month they gave out Uncharted 3, XCom, LBP Karting (I bought it when it was $10 for PS+ subscribers), and Deus Ex Human Revolution. Previously they've had Ratchet and Clank, Spec Ops: The Line, Sleeping Dogs, and a bunch of other big studio titles. If you bought just the titles for this month you'd spend at least $50, even at the cheapest retailers online.

With the planned death of physical media for games, it will soon become impossible to do so. Like, Sony literally plans to stop making discs starting in 2028, and all games you buy will have to be digital only. GTA 6 is just giving a code in a box. It's really the end of times for physical media in a few years, maybe something can change if consumers push back but they likely will not if we are being realistic.

All Xbox consoles can play audio CDs. (Later ones need software added to do that, but that software is free.)
Playstations after the PS3, though: Not so much. (Sony lost track of their "It Only Does Everything" schtick[1] somewhere along the way.)

I was suspicious too, but it does seem legitimate. They're making fun of the PlayStation going digital-only for games thing.

And don't forget closing the PS3 and Vita Playstation stores, which they announced at the same time:
https://blog.playstation.com/2026/07/01/an-update-on-playstation-store…
This is a weird marketing strategy. They must feel free to do as they please since they know consumers are trapped.
keraf · 2026-07-01
And with more and more content being distributed digitally, and even Sony announcing that physical disks won't be a thing from 2028 [0], the days of media ownership are gone. The only way to "own" content is it being DRM free (rare) or piracy. And ironically, DRMs justify the existence of piracy.

Shutting down the stores on the PlayStation 3 and PS Vita, too.

Since they're also shutting down the PS3 and Vita stores - https://blog.playstation.com/2026/07/01/an-update-on-playstation-store…
That means that when the PS8 rolls around, any games you've bought for the digital-only PS6 will be unplayable, so think about that when you buy digital games when that (and for PS5 now) comes through.

Is there any reason in particular you think this? Sony only removed the feature, citing "security concerns" mere months after George Hotz released the exploit. They would later go on to sue him. https://blog.playstation.com/archive/2010/03/29/ps3-firmware-3-21-comi…
On the other hand, the Ps3 clusters were around since basically the console's launch. Additionally, the console had been selling at a profit, at least in the US, by 2009, before they removed the other os feature.
All this happened 16 years ago. If you're curious about stuff that has happened so recently, you can research it online.

It’s designed so that you can pair two together, or one with a controller; I think they talked about this motivation back when they announced it.

I mean, the PS5 is running a Zen 2 processor [0] so I would assume it's vulnerable. In general I would assume that AAA games are safe. Websites and smaller games made by malefactors will be the issue. (Note that AAA game makers have little interest in antagonizing the audience, OTOH they also will push limits to install anti-cheat mechanisms. On balance I'd trust them.)

This device doesn't compete with the Switch, It's only to stream PS5 games over the Wifi, they even categorize it as "accessory", not "console"
I think you have interest in a competing company for being this much disingenuous

I was very impressed by PSVR2 but I'd be hesitant to "invest" in a PS accessory that costs more [0] than the console and not knowing[1] that it will be compatible with future consoles.

I never got around to finishing that one.
There's an article out there about how the 1-bit color rendering works, which I found quite interesting:

To be fair, it was the PUBG developers themselves who called Fortnite a clone:
https://www.forbes.com/sites/insertcoin/2017/09/22/pubg-developer-call…
And also Epic themselves stated Fortnite was their "own version" of "Battle Royale games like PUBG"

It's likely that Vicarious Visions was unable to get the source code from Naughty Dog due to Activision being unable to get it via Sony, though I'm not 100% sure about that since VV mentioned that majority of the original code is virtually unusable in a blog post.

Sony recently announced they are turning their Playstation Now service into a similar thing (previously it was cloud streamed titles, now you can download the title to your console for a monthly fee)

Seems to be a hardware restriction. According to the PS4 Pro: The Ultimate FAQ[1]:
"No, PS4 Pro’s internal Blu-ray drive does not support the new Ultra 4K Blu-ray Disc format."
So, no future firmware update can fix this.
