I think Cursor is very useful, fully compatible with vscode, basically do not use their own code, write their own instructions, Cursor is fully executed, no matter how many times to modify, it will not complain. You can try it. I think you'll love it. Cursor: https://www.cursor.com/

Cursor [1] has excellent codebase RAG, and great recall of third party documentation. Use "instruction @web @Flask" to search the internet and Flask docs before answering, for example. [1] https://www.cursor.com/

Been hearing great things about Cursor, and its been impressive in my few days of use. https://www.cursor.com

I currently tested the cursor IDE [1]. It’s vscode with nice ai integrations made with great ux in mind. They integrate with ChatGPT and Claude Sonnet/ Opus. For my experience (rust/typescript) the sonnet 3.5 model is giving me better results. You can pass the current file, or multiple files or your whole project as context to the models. The competition in AI editors is a bit silly at the moment. Everyone and their dog are "building" an AI assisted editor now by duct taping Ollama onto VS Code. I don't like my data being sent to untrusted parties, so I cannot evaluate most of these. On top of that, the things keep evolving as well, and editors that I dismissed a few months ago, are now all of a sudden turning into amazing productivity boosters, thanks to developments in both models as well as in editor tricks. My money is on Cursor [1], which does not stop to amaze me, and seems to get a lot of traction. The integration is very clever, and it is scary how it figures out what I intend to do. Then again, I'm probably doing mundane tasks most of the time. For the few bright moments in my day I tend to use ChatGPT, because most of my real problems are in application domains, not in code. I am not a firm believer in forking large open-source projects, though, as it will take a lot of effort to keep up with future diversions. This makes me a bit wary of projects such as Cursor and Void [2]. Somebody needs deep pockets to sustainably surpass the popularity of VS Code. To point out just one problem with forking: VS Code works fine in Ubuntu, but Cursor does not work out of the box there. Having to disable the sandbox is a show-stopper for most. In that respect, the extensions might be a safer bet, and I think Sourcegraph's Cody and Continue are making the largest waves there. Hard to tell with so many…

Claude.ai is now at a 98.85% uptime. There's been so many frustrations with Claude / Anthropic lately (very heavy usage limits, wrong A / B testing, etc.). Claude status: https://status.claude.com/ I have been really happy with my Codex subscription lately, but feels like these things change every other day. The OpenCode Go subscription for trying out GLM, Kimi, Qwen, Deepseek and friends also looks useful. But nonetheless, Opus 4.6 is a very capable model, but justifying a Claude subscription gets more and more difficult, think I might just sometimes use it through OpenRouter or as part of something like Cursor (although I'm not sure about the value of that subscription as well). Hey, sorry about that! Some AUR packages share cursor in a way that isn't forward+backwards compatible across releases. We recommend using our official AppImage from https://cursor.com/download Alternatively, please use a different AUR package that doesn't have these issues https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/cursor-nightly-bin

Such a good read. I actually went back though it the other day to steal the searching for the least common byte idea out to speed up my search tool https://github.com/boyter/cs which when coupled with the simd upper lower search technique from fzf cut the wall clock runtime by a third. There was this post from cursor https://cursor.com/blog/fast-regex-search today about building an index for agents due to them hitting a limit on ripgrep, but I’m not sure what codebase they are hitting that warrants it. Especially since they would have to be at 100-200 GB to be getting to 15s of runtime. Unless it’s all matches that is.

Cursor just wrote a great blog post on this - "Fast regex search: indexing text for agent tools" https://cursor.com/blog/fast-regex-search

Cursor promises to do this[0] in the product, so, especially on HN, it'd be best to start with "why this is better than Cursor". > favorite doc sites so I do not have to paste URLs into Cursor This is especially confusing, because cursor has a feature for docs you want to scrape regularly. 0 - https://cursor.com/docs/context/codebase-indexing

OK I'd love to know more about how they implemented this: https://cursor.com/changelog/1-7#sandboxed-terminals "Commands now execute in a secure, sandboxed environment. If you’re on allowlist mode, non-allowlisted commands will automatically run in a sandbox with read/write access to your workspace and no internet access."
geminiiii9 · 2025-05-22
I use https://www.cursor.com/ and it can use Gemini and write straight to files in your project. Its free for a month.
graeme · 2025-04-21
Oh, that's not great. Cursor has a privacy mode where you can avoid this. >If you enable "Privacy Mode" in Cursor's settings: zero data retention will be enabled, and none of your code will ever be stored or trained on by us or any third-party. https://www.cursor.com/privacy
biotechbio · 2025-03-31
I've had an excellent experience with Cursor: https://www.cursor.com/en I used VSCode as my default IDE so the switch was very natural. I am working on machine learning in bio, and many of the tools, methods, and data structures are very domain specific. Even so, the agent feature is good enough that for most tasks, I can describe the functionality I want and it gets me 80% of the way there. I pay $20 a month for Cursor and it has quickly become the last subscription I would cancel.

Yeah, that's really in poor taste of them. So while I'm here, here are links to the tools they mentioned: https://www.cursor.com/ https://v0.dev/ https://lovable.dev/ https://bolt.new/

If they’re talking about the Cursor I’m familiar with, it is “The AI Editor”. Basically it’s a fork of vscode with LLMs built in https://www.cursor.com/
seb1204 · 2025-01-19
https://www.cursor.com/ Gives you access to all three plus Calude as well.
cloudking · 2025-01-07
For whole codebase prompting, you'll have a much better time with https://www.cursor.com/ You can use OpenAI, Anthropic, Google etc as the LLM provider. o1 is supported https://docs.cursor.com/chat/codebase
adishj · 2024-11-10
https://www.cursor.com/ Cursor is a fork of VS Code which integrates an AI chat into your IDE itself. The AI has context of all your code files and you can highlight certain snippets and prompt the AI and do it all within your IDE without having to go to the browser and prompt and copy and paste. We are doing the same thing for video editing. An AI chat will be built into your video editing software, and will have context of your video. You will be able to highlight certain snippets of your video and prompt the AI, and it will be able to analyze and generate automatic edits based on your prompts.

Install Cursor (https://cursor.com), go into Cursor Settings and disable everything but Claude, then open Composer (Ctrl/Cmd + I). Paste in your exact command above. I bet it’ll do something pretty close to what you’re looking for.

Ah yes, working on multiple files was an issue until very recently. Firstly, at claude.ai you can upload multiple files, so Claude will take those into account and even suggest changes to multiple files. You are then, however, still copy/pasting from a web interface. Enter cursor (https://www.cursor.com/), you can either use a Claude API key (but it will warn you that all the features they want you to pay for then don't work), or just use the free version, like I am currently. It gets me enough prompts per day to improve my life. Or you could pay for it, but I have a feeling that this is a sort of WinRAR situation...
pragmomm · 2024-10-03
Canvas is closer to Cursor (https://www.cursor.com) than Claude. I wonder how Paul Graham thinks of Sam Altman basically copying Cursor and potentially every upstream AI company out of YC, maybe as soon as they launch on demo day. Is it a retribution arc?
umbs · 2024-08-24
He meant Cursor editor [1] and not VS Code Corsor. He corrected in the next X post [2] [1] https://www.cursor.com [2] https://x.com/karpathy/status/1827148812168871986

Great. They also have other blog posts with product roadmap and research directions https://www.cursor.com/blog/problems-2024 you should look at, and an AI engineer conference talk which goes into their vision: https://youtu.be/6g28WpZbF1I?si=MkHgxMDMjxxOHtcZ

Claude 3.5 Sonnet is the first model that made me realize that the era of AI-aided programming is here. Its ability to generate and modify large amounts of correct code - across multiple files/modules - in one response beats anything I've tried before. Integrating that with specialized editors (like https://www.cursor.com) is an early vision of the future of software development.

https://www.cursor.com/ - an AI-first VS Code clone VS Code (and Cursor) has so nice Jupyter support that I find it much better to use it for my workflow, rather than using any dedicated solution for Jupiter Notebooks only.
IanCal · 2024-06-27
I don't know about the usability for you but if you use vscode already cursor is basically vscode but has access to various llms, including Claude. I started using it recently and really like it. https://cursor.com
techpeace · 2024-06-21
I use it through both the chat interface and the Cursor IDE: https://www.cursor.com/
