> No? YouTube Red is ad-free videos on youtube.com along with music videos. Play Music subscription is all access to music in play music. "And as a special bonus - YouTube Red works with Google Play Music, so subscribe to one and automatically get access to the other." http://youtube-global.blogspot.com/2015/10/red.html So, they're different, but as each includes the other and they have the same $9.99 price, the difference is essentially purely academic.

On May 25th, 2011 YouTube turned six years old and announced "more than 48 hours (two days worth) of video are uploaded to the site every minute" http://youtube-global.blogspot.com/2011/05/thanks-youtube-community-fo…

This is not only a problem with recipe sites, but with most user input. http://youtube-global.blogspot.com/2009/09/five-stars-dominate-ratings… YouTube noticed a similar issue. Getting users to rate on a star rating just isn't effective. You may have more luck with a simple 'yes/no' option. Would you make this again? And offer the opportunity for comments. I find the comments in the reviews on epicurious to be very influential in how I follow the recipe, and if I cook it at all.

This. I was in Microsoft, part of an org which pulled in billions of dollars in double digits annually. When doing planning and visioning exercise, time and again we would never focus on scenarios which seemed to be ‘trivial’ (translating to hundreds of millions dollar revenue oppurtunity), as we had limited headcount and finite amount of time to execute. Startups don’t realize how constrained are the product teams in big organizations, much more than many startups. Every headcount, every contract worker (if they are allowed at all) need to be fought for. And then there is bureaucracy - post planning and spec’ing it is impossible to do any sort of minor pivot, once the juggernaut starts rolling there is no stopping, no room for even a pause to evaluate a new threat. I’m not an expert of gaming by any stretch and I’m sure the founders decided on best course of actions based upon their priorities but looking at the YouTube Gaming page (http://youtube-global.blogspot.in/2015/06/a-youtube-built-for-gamers.h… YouTube seem to be aiming for something which is natural extension of what was already happening in YouTube: “More than 25,000 games will each have their own page, a single place for all the best videos and live streams about that title. You’ll also find channels from a wide array of game publishers and YouTube creators.” I thought the founders were right when they said YouTube Gaming launch is a validation. I’m sure in the initial days YouTube Gaming org would be…

YouTube actually had something like this available for a while (or still does this?) through Caption Search.[1] If a video had captions available (either user provided or automated), one could search based on the captions on that video. Results would return the video and the time associated with that clip in question. I am not exactly sure why they discontinued the user experience, since it seems like it could be really useful for finding relevant parts in potentially long videos. > The wails from YouTube in particular have only just died down. This isn't past-tense yet. Until this change, which isn't fully deployed yet (http://youtube-global.blogspot.com/2015/07/youtube-comments.html , "in the coming weeks"), YouTube still requires a G+ account to comment or upload videos.
danso · 2015-07-27
The OP links to a corresponding YouTube blog post with more specifics about how the G+ rollback affects the YouTube service (as of today, YouTube comments will only show up on YouTube, and not on G+, and vice-versa): http://youtube-global.blogspot.com/2015/07/youtube-comments.html It also mentions improvements to the ranking system "that reduces the visibility of junk comments. It’s working—the rate of dislikes on comments has dropped by more than 35 percent across YouTube."...Is there a whitepaper or engineering blog post about their technical approach to this?
jsalit · 2015-04-08
Yep, there's mention of it on an old blog post [1], but you can verify for yourself on the Enhancements page when editing any video - there's a "Revert to original" button. [1] - http://youtube-global.blogspot.com/2011/09/edit-your-videos-with-youtu…

YouTube already realized that the 5-star rating system doesn't work [1]. Based on the histograms I see on the Play Store, it's seems like they should realize it too. [1] http://youtube-global.blogspot.com/2009/09/five-stars-dominate-ratings…
ZeroGravitas · 2013-06-19
They claimed to be encoding all new videos uploaded, and to have already processes up to 30% of their entire back-catalogue, and 99% of viewed videos about two years ago. So I'm guessing they're pretty much done by now. http://youtube-global.blogspot.co.uk/2011/04/mmm-mmm-good-youtube-vide… If I do a similar search to yours, the ones that disappear from the &webm=1 search are all presented to me with Flash, not with HTML5/H.264 but I believe if you embed them in another site you should get the HTML5/Webm version (not actually tested this, just read it as a workaround). You could also try searching for them on a Wii, since it's Youtube app uses Webm.

Youtube did a pretty interesting article on how they were switching to a thumbs system (like or dislike) after using stars for years and finding people either used 1 or 5. Found it, not as interesting as I recall: http://youtube-global.blogspot.co.uk/2009/09/five-stars-dominate-ratin…
tolos · 2012-08-22
Similar to what you said, where YouTube found most people only voted 5 stars, with 1 and 4 stars being used much less frequently: http://youtube-global.blogspot.com/2009/09/five-stars-dominate-ratings…

http://youtube-global.blogspot.com/2012/07/google-video-content-moving… TUESDAY, JULY 3, 2012 Google Video content moving to YouTube Later this summer, all remaining hosted video on Google Video will be moved to YouTube. Google Video stopped taking uploads in May 2009 and now we’re moving the remaining hosted content to YouTube as private videos. Google Video users can rest assured that you won’t be losing any of your content as it will be fully available on YouTube, and you can choose to make those videos public on YouTube if you’d like. If you would prefer to migrate, delete or download your content yourself, you can do so by visiting the Google Video status page prior to August 20, 2012

It was only a matter of time before people stopped visiting these sites on their own. The digital content scene in India is much better than in the US. In the US you pay for watching TV Series online on Netflix. Those series are sometimes delayed by months. In India most of the TV Shows are available to view on the next day on YouTube (http://youtube-global.blogspot.in/2012/03/19000-episodes-of-indian-tv-… In the US you pay for streaming music services like Spotify. On the other hand all of the Bollywood songs are available for unlimited free streaming on http://www.saavn.com. They even have a free iPhone/Android app with unlimited streaming (The app and websites use adverts as the main revenue stream.)

YouTube lifted their limits on videos for some users: http://youtube-global.blogspot.com/2010/12/up-up-and-away-long-videos-… "Starting today, we’ll begin allowing selected users with a history of complying with the YouTube Community Guidelines and our copyright rules to upload videos that are longer than 15 minutes." ... "This launch has been made possible in part by the continued advances in our state-of-the-art Content ID system, as well as our other powerful tools for copyright owners. Over 1000 global partners use Content ID to manage their content on YouTube, including every major U.S. movie studio and music label. We remain as dedicated as ever to building and improving the most sophisticated technology in the world to help copyright owners protect their rights. "

The 10 minute limit is to make uploading episodes of TV shows more annoying [1]. It has never been a technical limitation. [1] http://youtube-global.blogspot.com/2006/03/your-15-minutes-of-fameummm…

"Google doesn't use GWO on any page of importance and neither should you." That's not true, Youtube used GWO to run a successful, massive multivariate experiment on its US front page, which qualifies as a page of importance in my book: http://youtube-global.blogspot.com/2009/08/look-inside-1024-recipe-mul…

The average rating system is horribly broken: http://youtube-global.blogspot.com/2009/09/five-stars-dominate-ratings… edit: to clarify, no YouTube is not "average." But the fact still remains that allowing users to rate a piece of content on a graded scale is 5 stars of FAIL.
CoryOndrejka · 2009-11-06
I can't find solid analysis of Amazon's rating system, but neither YouTube nor Netflix are bimodal: * YouTube is all 5 stars (http://youtube-global.blogspot.com/2009/09/five-stars-dominate-ratings… * Netflix: 3, 4, and 5 dominate (http://www.timelydevelopment.com/demos/NetflixPrize.aspx)
adi92 · 2009-11-06
I think a closed forum with users who have established definitions for the difference between what each number of the scale implies would have a bimodal distribution. Sites like youtube ( http://youtube-global.blogspot.com/2009/09/five-stars-dominate-ratings… ) and amazon ( http://portal.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=1562764.1562800&coll=GUIDE&a… ) have more of a J-curve
aarongough · 2009-10-29
YouTube recently admitted that they have a similar problem with their rating system (http://youtube-global.blogspot.com/2009/09/five-stars-dominate-ratings… The raw data simply doesn't show a decent distribution of ratings. People are far more likely to simply give something 1 star or 5 stars. I would say that it's far more meaningful to use a simple thumbs up/thumbs down system...
