Apparently in order for a home network, with modern appliances to be secure you need to be at least a geek these days.
You probably need a router that runs OpenWRT, Linux or BSD like caramobola2[1], to configure manually in order to monitor incoming and outgoing connections, blocking suspicious traffic.
Then you probably need something that can run XBMC[2] as a home entertainment system (atom HTPC works like a charm, I have one). Then a flashed dreambox PVR which runs linux too and you can do a lot of things but most importantly monitor everything.
So basically, anything that runs proprietary software is a security concern. Strangely, the more corporations try to build walled gardens the bigger the security risk is.

GeeXboX (http://www.geexbox.org/)

None of them have particularly good "elevator pitches" for what they are or do. I hear people like XBMC.

I've been using an ASRock Ion with XBMC as my media center for over a year now and I love it. Plays anything I throw at it without any jitter. 1080p content? No problem thanks to the onboard NVidia chip.

Combined with the Aeon skin it is a beautiful thing.

Nice idea, but it's a mix of ubuntu/mac/windows, so something web based would be ideal :)

Everything seems fairly basic on the collaborative/veto/encorporating others taste front at the mo though....

I don't use a Mac, but for my PC I have a video card with two DVI ports. The DVI ports on this card will also send the audio through it. If you have a DVI to HDMI adapter, you'll get the audio on your TV/receiver.
Given that, I'm only using the video portion of the HDMI cable and using the S/PDIF (a single RCA cable, digital signal though) output on my mother board to send a digital audio signal over to my receiver.
I use XBMC (Windows, Mac, Linux) for watching movies. It's beautiful software, free and open source: http://xbmc.org/

I have PS3 too, it can do almost anything like boxee here. However, I have old xbox (first one) with xbmc installed on it - now, that can do everything! (except HD on xbox last time I checked).

Set it up as a media center with XBMC (http://xbmc.org/) its miles ahead of MythTV or any others that I've come across.

XBMC is also good and available for Mac, Win and Linux: http://xbmc.org/

For those who don't know (as I didn't) XBMC[1] is an open-source media center/entertainment application that supports a variety of OSes, including Android. And, apparently, the project is going to be renamed "Kodi" in the near future.

You must have heard wrong, and it's the other way around.
Apple did not open their video acceleration APIs until they released OS X 10.6.3 circla mid-2010.

The Xbox 360's processor is PPC. GP was referring to the difficulty of porting XBMC and its underlying codecs to PPC.
On that front, XBMC already runs on PowerPC[1]. It also already has some flavor of Direct3D bindings, since the original Xbox used D3D 8. No idea whether PPC/D3D 9 would be hard or not.

> lots of plugging things in
One cable with MHL (power, display) and bluetooth keyboard and mouse.
Some devices, such as the Galaxy S III, uses MHL adapters that also provides a USB port so you can hook up your USB keyboard and mouse to the MHL adapter and have just one cable to attach even if you want a wired keyboard and mouse.
> harder to coordinate everyone, possibility of losing things
How is that any different from today with offices full of laptops?
> can a tablet do all the graphics processing for a big screen?
Yes. My <$130 Allwinner A10 based laptop gives decent performance at full HD (1080p) resolutions today, and it is by no means a high end tablet. Sure, you are not going to get the same performance today on a tablet that cheap as on current high end laptops or desktops, but it is "good enough" for many uses, and this tablet lagged substantially behind the top of the crop tablets already on release.
> What if you are using a big file - can your tablet handle it?
Big by what standard? What it can't handle today, the next generation will handle soon enough. It is not that these tablets and phones will magically be capable enough now, but they are catching up to the type of laptop and desktop performance the vast majority of users are willing to pay for at a rapid rate.
> Disk space is a huge draw to PCs too. Very few people I know are happy to entrust their life's photo collection to an online storage-as-a-service provider.
My <$130 tablet today has 48GB…
