Might this compete with Thumbtack [1]? That's the comparable startup that comes to mind.

This is a local services marketplace, not software, but it has good marketing.

I would say we have a lot of evidence that great candidates enjoyed doing our challenges, but certainly it isn't for everybody. You are free to not do the challenges.
As for your secondary point about the quality of our team, I encourage you to read our engineering blog (http://www.thumbtack.com/engineering/) and look at some of our open source contributions (https://github.com/thumbtack). I think you will find more than enough material there to see what our engineering team is all about.

There are definitely many startups in SF whose teams all live in the same house together, and work there, who seem to be doing just fine. Some (like http://thumbtack.com) even have an in-house chef and other perks.
In my opinion, early-stage startups should live together. Yeah, sure, it'd be nice to have more of a distinction between home and work, but honestly 90% of your day in an early-stage startup is work. However, an office is definitely preferred during the later stages, which is not to say that a house is inappropriate.
Key milestones which might be a good sign for getting an office space:
- Not even two houses could hold all team members
- You're on your third hiring wave (i.e. none of the new hires are considered part of the core, or even secondary, team)
- Your advisors tell you to get a house
- Increasing tension among workers

Nice clean design. How does your site compare to Yext and compete with what they're doing? Also, how did you obtain that domain?

These are great! Thank you Evan. Your sample size calculator is wonderful and beats the hell out of the 90s tool I've been using which cautions me that my browser must support "JavaScript" to use it :)
As an alternative to the Chi-squared calculator, people might want to check out ABBA, a tool I wrote here at Thumbtack:
http://www.thumbtack.com/labs/abba/
It shares the visual component and the linkability, two great features you've nailed. It lacks the live updating and the slider, which is really cool and something I've wanted to add to ABBA for a long time. On the other hand, it supports multiple groups compared against the baseline simultaneously and incorporates a correction for multiple testing into its p-values and confidence intervals, which can be handy. It also uses different mathematics under the hood, but that's not going to be a concern for most users.
Glad to see another step towards a more statistically-aware world!

This is hyper-locale specific, but the median per square foot construction cost in the US is under $150:
* https://www.newhomesource.com/guide/articles/cost-to-build-house-per-s…
Though a more realistic number, if one wants something a bit "nicer" may be up to $250:
* https://www.thumbtack.com/p/home-building-cost-by-sqft
In more (high-demand) urban areas, the price of the dirt may dwarf the price of the structure. When people say they "bought a home for $x", what's really happening is that they bought the land for $y and the structure for $z. If you look at homeowner's insurance, the coverage for rebuilding is $z and not $x.

I would say most of the middle class doesn't have the ability to legally defend themselves either. They might be able to, but it's financially catastrophic. You can pay a lawyer to plea for you, but if it goes to trial, it could be in the 10s of thousands. It all depends on how long the prosecutor can draw out the trial. Also keep in mind while this is going on, you've probably been fired, so you don't have any income to pay for it, so it depends on how much you have saved. (You probably won't get a loan with no job).

I'm sorry, but I'm just not buying into this business model. Trying to do everything at once and doing nothing well at all.
Just look at their services directory:
http://www.thumbtack.com/more-services
My friends who are DJ's and hair stylists hate these kinds of services with a passion. People like to deal with people directly and operate on referrals in most of these industries.

It's a bit confusing that this has the same name as another (pretty well known) a/b test calculator: http://www.thumbtack.com/labs/abba/
gus_massa · 2013-02-18
But with the opening rate, there is a totally different story: http://www.thumbtack.com/labs/abba/#Sunday=157%2C389&Tuesday=175%2…

We've written a few posts on our blog about our A/B testing framework.
Our event tracking system: http://www.thumbtack.com/engineering/building-our-own-tracking-engine-…
ABBA, our tool for analyzing the results:
http://www.thumbtack.com/engineering/gambling-with-the-devil-ab-tests-…
A script for using ABBA with Mixpanel:
http://www.thumbtack.com/engineering/ab-testing-with-mixpanel/
yahelc · 2012-10-10
I made a bookmarklet for easily calculating statistical significance, specifically for this use case.
After enabling the bookmarklet, you click the numbers you need and then it sends it to an A/B testing calculator hosted by the folks who made ABBA
Project: https://github.com/yahelc/ABBA-bookmarklet
Sends to here: http://www.thumbtack.com/labs/abba/

on redbeacon, the only thing you as a consumer can do is put in a wanted ad. you can do this on thumbtack--see: http://www.thumbtack.com/postwanted.
what you can't do on redbeacon is browse service providers' profiles. redbeacon seems to want to segregate the two sides so that they can arbitrage the leads, but it leads to an incomplete user experience.
on thumbtack you can post a wanted ad or browse an available service and book people directly.
