If you you want to write HTMl code from the scratch. Go to http://projectdeploy.org/ and download complete Skeleton structure based on your requirements. Then head over to http://speckyboy.com/ this has the best set of Tutorials and Showcases. Programming for web is fairly very simple.

I hate to complain, but I am so tired of these articles that just repost all the same old icon sets that have been out for years (or years in the digital sense). Every month a new one of these posts comes out, but with the same icon sets as every other post. Pet peeve. http://webdesignledger.com/freebies/21-best-icon-sets-for-designing-we… http://speckyboy.com/2008/07/28/96-best-ever-free-icon-sets-for-web-de… http://www.problogdesign.com/resources/30-best-free-icon-sets-for-blog… http://www.webiconsets.com/ And the list goes on.

Lego. I spoke to my parents about 6 months ago whilst they were having a clear out of family toys from yesteryear - their main question: "What do you want us to keep for your (potential) children?" My answer was quite simple: "My Lego and my Brio - that's about it" Lego is made to last a lifetime and more, specified to an extreme degree and made with tolerances far and beyond most consumer electronics; it is something that can be inherited. The important part here is that I wouldn't want my children to inherit a set - I would want them to inherit the bricks - that is the fun of Lego. I want to give them 2 30 gallon boxes of bricks and boards and men and all sorts because creativity is not born of following instructions - it comes from deciding to create an aeroplane from the odd bits and pieces that you have at hand. There is a very good reason that these[1] adverts aren't for sets - Lego is amazing because you can create whatever you can imagine with it and for that reason this doesn't sit very well with me. But then I have 60 gallons of lego waiting for me when I eventually procreate so what do I care... [1] http://speckyboy.com/2009/03/16/39-creative-lego-advertisements-creati…

> they are a place many startups get stuck. Yeah sure, this is true. Anyone remember the dotcom swoosh era (http://lekowicz.com/library/logohell/logohell.html )? Startups also get stuck on UI (custom, bootstrap, jquery-ui, yui), backend (node, ruby, java, groovy, php) and database (mysql, postgresql, redis, mongo). For most businesses the logo is just something that shows up in the top left corner of the website, it really doesn't matter all that much as long as it is clean. I bet if you took this logo (http://kevinohashi.com/sites/default/files/Review%20Signal.png) and had it up on your site without mentioning you paid $30 nobody would have noticed/cared. What you have is just a cheap logo. And that's OK. Like a cheap car or a cheap UI it serves a purpose. Just like if you built a web application using out-of-the-box bootstrap the majority of end users will not even notice. That doesn't mean logos should only cost $30, or that for the $30 you spent that you have a great logo. Then again, maybe you don't need a great logo. A great logo should be instantly recognizable and fit with the message that is your company. http://speckyboy.com/2011/06/15/30-of-the-most-iconic-logos-and-brands…

I use one of the free wireframe toolkits (https://speckyboy.com/free-wireframe-templates-mobile-app-web-ux-desig… with Powerpoint or Keynote. You can make them interactive by assigning an action to a button and making it go to another slide. Not as good as Figma, Wireflow or Origami, but gets me 90% of the way there.

Being a big fan of Blueprint CSS, I've been finding it very useful on that purpose. Give a try. http://www.blueprintcss.org/ Or keep searching on Quora & Stackoverflow. Here is an example that might be working for what you've been searching. http://www.quora.com/Are-there-any-web-2-0-UX-UI-development-framework… Focussing on Javascript UI libraries could also work. http://speckyboy.com/2010/05/17/15-javascript-web-ui-libraries-framewo…

Wow. Is anyone gullible enough to believe this is anything but a strike at google's ad business? For an example of what could go wrong, look at the absolute debacle in europe when legislators tried to control cookie privacy with the EU cookie directive. On the eve of the first implementation deadline the UK pretty much told sites, "nevermind for a year", then literally 24 hours before that deadline, the ICO decided to implement implied consent. Site owners were left virtually clueless about what the actual law meant and how to comply. [1, 5] Pubs that rely on advertising income will also be hurt. Empirically users throw virtual tantrums about paying money for content. The NYT has had an enormous fight to get people to pay. Most people would be shocked at the amount of data that anyone who wants can purchase from Experian and a host of other companies. Where you live; how much you make; your credit rating; demographics such as age, gender, ethnicity; if you own your home, the value, and when you purchased; purchasing activity; what stores you shop at; what type of car you drive [2:4]. Mail order catalogs commonly trade your name, address, and purchase history between them (between different industries). Etc etc etc. My politics run to the pretty far left and I think privacy is undervalued, but online behavior is a strange place to start. And to repeat it yet again: If you are not paying for it, you're not the customer; you're the product being sold --…

Beautiful graphic design is something I'd like to learn, and it is something I have not invested much effort in yet. Tutorials like those on SmashingMagazine can tell you the how but can't teach you the why. Any graphic designer/art student will tell you that learning how to draw is all about learning how to look. I'd like to be able to do design myself but realistically it is easier to become friends with good designers (yes, you pay them but it is more like working with a partner than a hired gun). In lieu of taking classes, go to art openings. I've met very few designer developer individuals. That being said here is a list of some resources for (previous AskYCs, rest of them learning how to make icons) (which is a stepping stone to Tap Tap Tap UI). http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1487274 http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1290147 http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=66863 http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=227406 http://web.archive.org/web/20050101092500/http://mpt.phrasewise.com/st… http://hicksdesign.co.uk/journal/principles-of-icon-design http://flyosity.com/tutorial/crafting-subtle-realistic-user-interfaces… http://steveweller.com/articles/tabbar-icons/ http://speckyboy.com/2009/04/28/35-tutorials-to-create-amazing-vector-… http://iphonedevelopment.blogspot.com/2010/05/some-good-advice.html
