All code written in C89 Written from scratch, without any dependencies. All operating system interaction is warped and ported. FreeBSD License. -Forge: stdlib with math, text, A*, geometry math, memory debugger and much more. -Imagine: Threads, timing, setting, lib loading. -Betray: Platform layer, with plugin support, VR, Multi-touch, controllers and more. Win32 , Linux and limited MacOS support. -Relinquish: Rendering library, wrapping OpenGL supports and hides a wide range of extensions. -Seduce: 3D UI toolkit, text rendering and editing, fonts, 3D manipulators, cameras. Mouse / multi-touch / multi-user / controller support. -Testify: Networking and serialization. TCP, UDP, Files, NAT Holepunching, local/global service discovery. -Hxa: asset file format, FBX and PNG implementation. Graphics processing. -Json parser. These libraries have been used extensively in software production for all my applications including LOVE, Exo, Stellar, MoF, and Loq Airou (source included). I wonder if this is also how Eskil Steenberg's 'Love' worked. [0] It had a spherical 'block' world as well. [0]: https://www.quelsolaar.com/love/

Reminds me of Eskil's apps way back when https://www.quelsolaar.com/love/development.html

It wasn't ever photo-realistic. Why bother with realism at all? This looks awesome btw http://www.quelsolaar.com/love/screen_shots.html? There was also a gory black and white and RED game that I can't find right now.

I get the gist of how Minecraft is constructed: just a bunch of blocks with algorithms which hide certain blocks when they aren't in the player's view. Are there any articles about how an engine like this is built? It is an extreme level of procedural generation (apparently), but the graphics aren't blocky and as abstract, but rather pretty impressive. In a similar vein is Eskil Steenberg's Love [1], but this is on another level entirely. [1] http://www.quelsolaar.com/love/index.html

There's also the Verse protocol for networked 3D. http://verse.github.io/ The Love MMO (http://www.quelsolaar.com/love/index.html) is built on top of it and there was partial support in Blender for it for a while. IDK if that is still there.

While one could argue that his post is just a "rant" and poorly written, methinks he knows what he's talking about. http://www.quelsolaar.com/love/video.html I find this game visually very appealing and different, and it seems to me that the gameplay is quite unique, too.

The visual style is such that it looks like a painting viewed through a sand storm through a camera with a lens smeared with vaseline. It looks amazing initially but literally is painful to look at for any significant amount of time. I think the developer essentially takes very basic geometry at low resolution then layers on graphical affects. You may think that looking at the gameplay demo that the game was simply recorded at low resolution but that is not the case. Bump the video to 720p and full screen then that is actually what it looked like at the time. Not sure if it has changed since the last time I played. http://quelsolaar.com/love/screen_shots.html

Since we're on the topic, I'd like to point out this project: http://www.quelsolaar.com/ The team behind that website are making an MMO game featuring procedurally generated environments and rendering techniques. They're developing all their tech in-house, with a rather small team, and releasing some of their tools for others to use. They've got a fascinating 3d modelling program, for instance, that you can download and fool around with. I'm co-founder of a startup game studio focussing on games with extensive procedural generation (note: not at all related to the above — mad respect for those guys, though). If you've got questions, I'm an open book. It's an exciting new trend in this industry, and we're going to be all over it.

Love is a neat game. Steenberg's toolchain for building the game, on the other hand, is incredible: http://www.quelsolaar.com/love/tool_video.html
julian37 · 2010-09-28
Reminds me of Quelsolaar's excellent toolkit for his LOVE game: http://www.quelsolaar.com/love/tool_video.html It also has Asteroids integrated in a similar way, as shown at around 70% into the video (unfortunately the video doesn't have a timecode, but it's worth watching in its entirety anyway.)

Speaking of production pipelines... http://uni-verse.org/ See videos here: http://www.quelsolaar.com/love/video.html The tool & development video in particular is fascinating, though the actual game he's developing also looks kinda interesting. In particular I'm incredibly impressed that all that is the work of more or less one man.

The web doesn't open any new possibility in that respect. There are MMOs where the visuals are centrally served. The client keeps a cache that is often updated from the server side. Really, this has never been a significant problem to stop studios from letting you mess with their worlds. There are other technical problems related to world representation, but most importantly, there are design integrity concerns. To design a world that the players can meaningfully modify but not screw up completely in various ways (mainly related to theme, playability and balance) sounds like a difficult, laborious task. If you're interested in this kind of stuff check out what this crazy swede is doing: http://www.quelsolaar.com/

There are plenty of indy game companies who are producing fun and innovative games without spending millions. Of the top of my head: Braid - http://braid-game.com/ Toribash - http://www.toribash.com/ Everyday shooter - http://www.everydayshooter.com/ Cortex command - http://www.datarealms.com/games.php Introversion Games in general - http://www.introversion.co.uk/ Velociraptor safari - http://raptorsafari.com/play.php Armadillo run - http://www.armadillorun.com/ Love (not released yet but so promising) - http://www.quelsolaar.com/ I predict that the combination of poorer customers and more accessible distribution channels (steam, iphone, kongregate) will result in a string of successes for such games - maybe enough to change the way the industry works.

This guy is a genius, for sure. He's operating on a whole different level of thought from the average lone game developer. His notes on UI development are very good: http://www.quelsolaar.com/technology/seduce.html I like this summary: "... your brain computes different things in a specific order: Motion, Color, Shape, Text. This is also how you should order your interface ..."
