I've heard great things about PostHog (YC 20), [1][2] an open-source alternative to Segment. you may find more suggestions in this related thread, too. [3]
hope it helps!

It looks like self-hosting Posthog (https://posthog.com/) should work, and they look great.
They're a US company, so you can't use their cloud service, but it's designed to be self-hosted and they have a list of EU cloud providers so you can do 100% EU-based self-hosting if you want: https://posthog.com/docs/self-host/deploy/hosting-in-eu

Agree, building this in 2021 is not a good use of data engineering time.
As well as the SaaS packages like Amplitude and Mixpanel, you also have great open-source tools and platforms for mobile and product analytics like PostHog (https://posthog.com/), Countly (https://count.ly/) and Snowplow (https://snowplowanalytics.com/).
Disclosure: Snowplow co-founder.

I know PostHog is only lightly mentioned in the article, but I would highly recommend checking them out! [0] (They're also open-source and provide a self-hosted solution. [1])

PostHog | Remote GMT -8 to +2 | (i) Technical Writer (ii) Senior Developer | Full Time | Salaries all visible at posthog.com/handbook/compensation (location-dependent)
https://posthog.com - see handbook at posthog.com/handbook
Open source, 6x rev growth last year, heading for profitability soon, well paid experienced team of 37 today, 25k customers across free + paid products, 65k developers in community, 0 outbound sales - all inbound growth. Didn't raise a 2021 overpriced round - real (potential!) upside.
* Technical writer *
Looking to hire a developer who loves to write. We aim for each piece we produce to be the best on the internet for that topic.
Content marketing is huge for us - writing deep technical content is what we want! You'd be on our (small) marketing team, making a huge impact.
Previous blogging (especially personal/interesting!) and a few years of development experience needed.
If interested, james at posthog.com and charles at posthog.com for a chat.
* Full stack developer *
We are looking for someone to build the next generation of our analytics backbone. You'll be working on ClickHouse and Python to make sure all our queries are web scale and users are happy.
You will (probably) help us build HogQL https://github.com/PostHog/meta/issues/86 (our own wrapper around ClickHouse SQL), or whatever else you think makes sense to prioritize. We work in small teams of up to 6, and you'll have a lot of trust to pick what to work on.
You need experience…

PostHog | Remote (US/Europe timezones) | Full stack engineer | https://posthog.com
PostHog is open-source product analytics. Graduated YC W20, we were the most popular B2B software HN launch since 2012. Our GitHub repo [0] has 9.4k stars and a growing and active community. We raised a reasonable Series B last year and still have plenty of runway, so there is lots of upside. We're about 35 people and aim to keep a lean team building an amazing product.
We have a culture of written async communication (see our handbook [1]), lots of individual responsibility and an opportunity to make a huge impact. Being fully remote means we're able to create a team that is truly diverse. We're based all over the world, and the team includes former YC founders, CTOs turned developers and recent grads.

PostHog | Remote (US/Europe timezones) | Senior Backend Engineer, SRE & more! https://posthog.com/
PostHog is open-source product analytics. Graduated YC W20, we were the most popular B2B software HN launch since 2012. Our GitHub repo [0] has 9k stars and a growing and active community. We've raised significant funding, default alive, and are growing quickly. We're 30+ people. Our stack is Django/React/Redux (Kea -- main contributor works at PostHog too!).
Our mission is to build tools that will increase the number of successful products that exist in the world.
We are looking for Backend Engineers & SREs to take care of scaling to 1 Trillion+ events, both for our cloud offering and larger customers who are self hosting. If you are interested in processing data reliably at scale and love databases like ClickHouse, this is your role!

Please excuse the poor editing and pell-mell thoughts, especially towards the end:
>We are considering creating few internal tools to speed up the work of a few departments in our organization, but before starting development heads on, I would love to gather some wisdom from HN.
First, what tools are you developing?
TL;DR: a machine learning platform that lets you use your own Kubernetes clusters from your cloud provider (GCP, Azure, AWS) and get real-time collaborative notebooks to train, track, package, deploy, and monitor your machine learning models.
>How do you handle user authentication?
TL;DR: manually added at first, and later added invite links and password-reset flows. Still invite based.
>Do you develop one single big application for everything in your organization, or few distinct applications, each with its own specific goal?
TL;DR: plugin system with a core that loads extensions at run-time. Each extension is its own separate repository. We could compose different products.
>Any specific thing to watch out for?
Yes, here we go...
Context: consultancy specialized in building end-to-end products for large enterprise. Around 17 people in 2018 working on about 8 projects simultaneously. CEO (co-founder) in one country and CTO (co-founder) in another country with the team. CTO quits a year and a half after I joined. Pretty much everyone quit after that except literally a handful. A colleague and I took over. We killed projects that were going nowhere,…

They are good at branding/marketing. They have a big team of awesome people (90ppl): https://posthog.com/people
They write a lot of blog posts, which usually tend to go viral on HN.
At the moment they provide a generous free tier too, so many people can get started without paying anything.
They also open-source most of their code: https://github.com/posthog
They raised a lot of money ~$39M
So, I would say that compared to other companies, they got more popular because of:
* modern marketing tactics * huge funding * still in growing phase, so they are focused on growth more than profits (phase in which most companies are at their best, as they try to give more than they take) * newer product * good timing (a lot of people are switching away from GA, which had a huge monopoly over web analytics).

No, actually, it's because Posthog explicitly recommends that as the way to do it, makes their standard npm package unpinnable (as it will always lazy load the most recent version of its modules) and calls version pinning via npm as an "advanced" installation[1].
The ecosystem has plenty of versioning and best practices, but they do jack squat when you recommend to your customers to bypass them and trust that you'll never break your latest build.

The math didn't add up for us (I work at PostHog). At the rate we were scaling, we would have needed an entire call center's worth of highly trained Kubernetes support engineers to debug everyone's "my pods just died" / "Kafka just stopped" / "what is Zookeeper" problems.
This stack isn't straightforward to manage, and we couldn't crack the code of doing it at scale for other people without even having access to their systems. There was no malicious intent.

Fairly accurate, you can only get support if you're using their cloud product.
"We no longer support paid, open-source deployments and it is no longer possible to buy licenses for self-hosted versions - we instead recommend migrating to PostHog Cloud." - from: https://posthog.com/docs/self-host

Hi HN, PostHog employee here. I'm working on our Web Analytics product, which is currently in beta. It's fun to see us mentioned here :)
I should mention that we have a ton of SDKs (see https://posthog.com/docs/libraries) for back end frameworks and languages, so if you wanted to use PostHog without any client-side JS you could send pageviews and other events manually, but for the vast majority of people it makes more sense to use our JS snippet.
Hijacking this comment to share the roadmap for web analytics https://github.com/PostHog/posthog/issues/18547. It's very much in the launch-early-and-be-embarassed phase, but I would love to hear any feedback or suggestions that people have, particularly if you're already a PostHog user.

Not "that anonymous user." In my experience, avoiding Join statements is a common best practice for Clickhouse users seeking performant queries on large datasets. A couple examples...

Besides all the already mentioned, solid responses about looking for new opportunities (personal network, consistent daily applications, etc), it's worth noting this one too:
Become a regular contributor to specific open-source projects (esp if it's a growing and/or funded startup).
This approach might work better for those that are already comfortable w/ OSS and don't yet have connections. When applying to that company a bit later, obviously mention all the merged PRs.
For example, here's Posthog [0] showing you what you could help with thru a job post. You can find more companies like this one at Fossfox [1], shameless plug: I maintain that index rn.

Could you tell me how this compares with other open-source session replay projects such as:
1) OpenReplay (https://openreplay.com/)
2) PostHog (https://posthog.com/)

Generally, I think having an open handbook is the trending culture. Building in the open is becoming more popular - GitLab really moved the needle on this, so IMO from an outsider's perspective, Airbyte [0] and Posthog [1] has the best (publicly available & documented) processes, apart from GitLab of course (I didn't like that they removed stuff like their compensation calc, but I understand the motivation).

We use it in prod at PostHog (https://posthog.com/) and it's SUPER practical as an abstraction over Redux's boilerplate. Also makes for really sensible separation of logic from presentation. Only TypeScript support requires a bit of additional setup as type inference doesn't work with this architecture.

I think PostHog is a more relevant comparison: https://posthog.com

I know of three (all OSS)
* https://www.posthog.com/ (more mixpanel alternative, can auto-track events too)
* https://snowplowanalytics.com/
* https://rudderstack.com/ (explicitly say it's Segment alternative)

Have you thought about moving to posthog or plausible?

> There are already some very feature-rich self-hosted tools in this space (like PostHog) though. Any reason why you wouldn't want to use those tools?
Thanks for mentioning PostHog. It looks promising and friendly: https://posthog.com
I use https://plausible.io (open source too).
As for the reason, maintenance and integration. I only need aggregated insight into traffic such as location (country/state), heat spots on the supabase parts (auth, database), referrers, etc. Most of what I need could be inferred from the logs.
