It's worth mentioning that Mr.doob (author of this code) is also an author of three.js graphics library and many astonishing demos. Check out his Github and home page (http://mrdoob.com) for (many) more interesting things!

Instructions under OSX
To get this working in Webkit Nightly - webkit.org
1. install Webkit Nightly from http://nightly.webkit.org/
2. paste the following into terminal:
defaults write com.apple.Safari WebKitWebGLEnabled -bool YES
3. visit the link
(this has minor render issues for me under webkit)
To get it working in Chromium:
1. first install latest chromium from: http://build.chromium.org/f/chromium/snapshots/chromium-rel-mac/
2. Drag into Applications folder
3. launch from terminal using: ./Chromium.app/Contents/MacOS/Chromium --enable-webgl
4. visit the link
You might want to check out http://www.chromium.org/developers/demos-gpu-acceleration-and-webgl for some more awesome webGL demos.
or, mrdoob's awesome site of course: http://mrdoob.com/

Edit: How do you actually play? I keep getting trapped in the Shareware Dimension!

Just from the name, I thought this was going to be Google's official take on the classic "Google Gravity" site from ages ago: https://mrdoob.com/projects/chromeexperiments/google-gravity/index.htm…
I used to love leaving that site open on public PCs and watching the reactions that resulted :)

Note for Firefox users, the "cat video" section is not working, and you will not be able to experience the rest of the app. You are supposed to break the player in a Google Gravity[1] like fashion, but it's broken. They should not "highly" recommend using chrome, but just say it does not work on other browsers.

From the author of threejs, an awesome webgl library:
https://mrdoob.com/#/131/clouds
badsectoracula · 2023-07-28
The parent post refers to responsiveness, not throughput. Even if the GDI was fully accelerated, the compositor adds additional input lag because it has to sync with the monitor's refresh rate whereas without DWM the monitor displays whetever is on the framebuffer. The drawback is that you get tearing and damage artifacts (like the classic crash window[0]).

Mr.doob's multiuser sketchpad has the essentials as far as real-time sharing and drawing capacity. It would work very well in private mode: you could share a link to start recording a live session.

Have a look at the demo sites for rune.js, three.js, create.js, sketch.js and processing.js. Then look up a few people like Seb Delisle (https://seb.ly/), Ana Tudor (https://codepen.io/thebabydino/), and Ricardo Cabello (http://mrdoob.com/). Browse around on Codepen.io and http://creativejs.com/ (especially http://creativejs.com/tutorials/index.html). Sadly Creative JS is essentially dead but it's still worth reading.

One of the drawbacks with rendering DOM content to a Canvas/WebGL texture is that interactivity is lost in the process. At the very least an intermediate layer would have to be created that pipes scene input into DOM input.
The nice part about CSS 3D transforms is that interactivity is maintained, and it's still hardware-accelerated. A fantastic example of this was made by the creator of Three.js over a year ago:
http://mrdoob.com/lab/javascript/threejs/css3d/
As you said above, there are severe drawbacks with that approach. It is very limited in terms of what's possible compared to a traditional 3D scene. Moreover, since CSS 3D transforms are essentially DOM content rendered to a texture, rasterization occurs, and as such there isn't clean scaling, even with SVG content.

Great read, especially enjoyed learning about why IE6 did that thing it did[0].
I'm not sure why I enjoy reading things like this. I have no intention of getting into X development or graphics programming for that matter but it was fun read nonetheless.

Great demo and presentation.
This is apparently based on the WebGL clouds demo, which is equally as amazing: http://mrdoob.com/131/Clouds

Real author appears unknown.
My version is that it's Ricardo Cabello Miguel[0], he supposedly has tweeted it first[1], and the source code of the cat feels like some of his projects'.

Made by Mr.doob who did the demos at http://mrdoob.com/ and who worked on Google's http://www.thewildernessdowntown.com/ .

It does seem vaguely familiar, somehow... (http://www.thewildernessdowntown.com/)
Doob's demos are quite inspirational.

To be fair, http://mrdoob.com has a lot of flash in the examples. You can learn http://processing.org/ and export to canvas if you want to do things like the stuff on that page.
On the other hand, js rocks...

I completely agree with you! The concept of drawing with looping curves and the divergence resembling a cellular automaton is fascinating. It opens up possibilities for creating visually unique and intriguing artwork. While it may require careful planning due to the relationship between curve size and velocity, the potential for exploiting this characteristic creatively is exciting.
Thank you for mentioning wobblepaint and shake art as alternative fun drawing tools. Wobblepaint's approach to recording and sharing drawings with infinite undo sounds fantastic. The ability to save and share the creative process can be incredibly inspiring and educational for others. Shake art also seems intriguing with its emphasis on adding an element of randomness to the artistic process.
In addition to the tools you mentioned, I would suggest checking out Harmony by Mr.doob [2]. It offers a collaborative drawing experience where multiple users can create art together in real-time. The interactive aspect and the ability to see others' contributions can lead to some truly unique and collaborative creations.
Exploring different drawing tools and techniques can unlock new avenues for artistic expression. It's wonderful to see the growing variety of tools available that cater to different creative preferences and approaches. Happy drawing!
