Read the Tryanny of Kindness. It is from 1993 and is a former welfare mother and advocate who advocates for a guaranteed income. The book goes into great length of the pathology of the welfare system and its non-profit charity profiteers. Of course that was 27 years ago. It obviously depends on the UBI. If it covered children, it would be absolutely better for the recipients. If it does not cover children, as in Yang's plan, then it is questionable, but it still could benefit a lot because many do not get it at all: https://medium.com/basic-income/there-is-no-policy-proposal-more-progr… http://www.scottsantens.com/tanf-is-terrible

The important question! I value (the late, amazing) Alan Watts' take on this: "The answer is the machine. The machine pays for it, because the machine works for the manufacturer and for the community." or put another way "It will simply come from the share of productivity gains made possible by technology that should already be shared." https://steemit.com/basicincome/@scottsantens/who-pays-for-universal-b… https://medium.com/basic-income/machine-labor-day-d77931dca9a8

https://medium.com/basic-income/why-land-value-tax-and-universal-basic… is a great article on how to do basic income. The problem is not so much general price rises, as rises in rent.

https://medium.com/basic-income/wouldnt-unconditional-basic-income-jus… The housing aspect still worries me because housing does not follow supply and demand in many places.

Yes, yes there is! In order of impact: Write to your representatives to support this bill, or a similar one if not in the USA: https://medium.com/basic-income/this-idea-can-literally-change-our-wor… Carbon tax the fossil fuel industry to make them switch to green energy faster (they are already investing in this). Distribute the proceeds as UBI to sell t to the public - Alaska’s Permanent Fund already has done this by “nationalizing” their own oil reserves for decades AND they have the lowest inequality of all US states. Win win! Form a political party in your country to focus on the most pressing issues (and avoid getting mirrd in eg gender bathrooms) and an app to unite everyone (I am doing this with rational.app and rational.party) REFORESTATION. CARBON SEQUESTRATION. There has been something in the human psyche that associates deforestation with progress. Well, it no longer is (we are bumping up against other limits). Support efforts like Nori and IBM’s carbon credits blockchain. But on a country level, it would be amazing if they set up a fund to reward countries for trees and carbon sequestration. Have actual incentives to grow it instead of laws punishing deforestation only. Bolsonaro would have something more cashflow positive from the rainforest in his mind finally. We have to PAY FOR WHAT WE WANT, WITH TAXES. Raise awareness, eg with scandalous art pieces that have a license to pollute with black smoke in a city, and attract people to websites…

I suggest you read https://medium.com/basic-income/wouldnt-unconditional-basic-income-jus… TLDR: there are many, many tests and experiments which show this not to be the case, because UBI is about circulating money, not creating new money. Redistributing money from all tax payers evenly across all citizens does not cause inflation. It just stops poverty.
alistairSH · 2020-07-30
Sure, if UBI is implemented without a matching increase in government revenue, or reallocation of existing government revenue. Every serious proposal for UBI does one, the other, or both of those. There is plenty of literature that contradicts your assertion. Surprisingly, no. When companies are making easy money, there is very little incentive to improve efficiency, and a lot of incentive to continue the status quo. It’s only during tight times do companies actually begin to seek out new efficiencies. Example: automated oil rig machines have existed for quite a while, but they really didn’t see a lot of usage until the oil crash in 2016[0]. After this crash the number of oil rig workers remained at low levels, even as oil rigs starting to produce again. Those jobs were already vulnerable to automation, it just took a financial crisis to trigger it. [0] https://medium.com/basic-income/the-real-story-of-automation-beginning…

Here is a pretty good article that assumes that you have zero knowledge and talks about how UBI could be implemented without any more inflation than we already have. https://medium.com/basic-income/wouldnt-unconditional-basic-income-jus…

As someone on the left and someone who has actively participated in multiple socialist parties in the US for years, the opposition to UBI from the left (DemSocs, Marxist-Leninists, various flavors of anarchists) is because we see it as a way for the ruling class to gut social programs instead of supplement them. The idea of "guaranteed income" argued for by people like MLK was a way to abolish poverty forever. Here's some MLK quotes on it from his book Where Do We Go From Here: https://medium.com/basic-income/mlk-on-guaranteed-income-bfd060fd5314

Copyright law is not supposed to create fairness. It is supposed to benefit society as a whole. If protection is too long, limited access to (and reuse of) existing work reduces the benefits of having a law. If protection is too short, some works may not get created due to the lack of incentives. Someone attempted to calculate an optimal duration, and concluded it was about 15 years: https://rufuspollock.com/papers/optimal_copyright_term.pdf (Related article: https://medium.com/basic-income/the-zombification-of-intellectual-prop…

Good first approximation but I think there are some limitations. For example, basic Income advocates do not say that everyone (children, for example) get the cash. So your denominator of 360M is incorrect and should be reduced by at least 75M. A 2006 study put the cost at 1.8Tr. And then goes on to detail how it can be done, largely by eliminating new tax loopholes versus introducing new taxes: http://www.usbig.net/papers/144-Sheahen-RefundableTaxCredit.pdf. For a less academic answer, the author Scott Saterns has spent a lot of time researching this topic and even lived on a simulated basic income for a year: https://medium.com/basic-income/what-if-you-got-1-000-a-month-just-for…

As the author of this article, I suggest reading this one next if your concern is inflation: https://medium.com/basic-income/wouldnt-unconditional-basic-income-jus… If you have another question check here: http://www.scottsantens.com/basic-income-faq

Here is the same author in 2014 attempting to explain how basic income won't lead to massive inflation: https://medium.com/basic-income/wouldnt-unconditional-basic-income-jus… >>>It would not be new money, just money shifted from one location to another. This means that the value of each dollar has not changed. The dollar itself has only changed hands.* There is no sure fire way to reduce the value of a dollar then to redistribute it to people that didn't work for it. The fact that you have to work for the dollar is the thing that gives the dollar value.

Indeed. I did not realize what a staggering fraction of blue collar jobs in the US are related, directly or indirectly, to long haul trucking: nearly 9 million. Disappearance of this industry will make the deindustrialization of the rust belt look absolutely trivial by comparison. https://medium.com/basic-income/self-driving-trucks-are-going-to-hit-u…

Why Milton Friedman supported guaranteed basic income: https://medium.com/basic-income/why-milton-friedman-supported-a-guaran… Most people are shocked to hear that Friedman held these views.
matheweis · 2016-03-13
Maybe ... before that happens, however, there will be a major shift in the most common vocation in nearly every state in the US. 3 million truckers will need major vocational re-training, and that doesn't even begin to count the many other services and industries that are dependent on truckers. See https://medium.com/basic-income/self-driving-trucks-are-going-to-hit-u…
dismal2 · 2016-01-28
If anything self driving cars will be most disruptive in trucking and delivery and in the process destroy the economy of middle america [1]. As for everyone having an on demand car, it has been stated here a number of times that most people still all need to get to work around the same time. If anything, automation and robots are a race to the bottom if we stick with capitalism in its current form. [1] https://medium.com/basic-income/self-driving-trucks-are-going-to-hit-u…
GavinMcG · 2016-01-23
How would that inflation work, exactly? UBI doesn't mean creating new money. This article [1] addresses that concern in a little more depth. Basically, the evidence we have from places that have tried this is that it might decrease inflation, and that in any case, the value of the income would far outstrip increased prices. There was recently a blog post analyzing exactly this: "Self-Driving Trucks Are Going to Hit Us Like a Human-Driven Truck" https://medium.com/basic-income/self-driving-trucks-are-going-to-hit-u… It was intensely discussed on HN as well https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=9555295 edited for spelling
