Love to see a fellow UCLA CS student on HN. I've been using http://www.geckoboard.com/ for a while. Their integration with AWS is what's kept me with them.

The design is absolutely incredible. I started using TicTrac [1] a little while ago, but it's not great. I hate that I have to set up and arrange everything myself. I really want to just wire up my accounts, and let a professional designer show me the information in a beautiful way. Other dashboards like Geckoboard [2] and TicTrac only let you dump a bunch of boxes on a page. The sports page on AprilZero is an amazing example of a cohesive design, where everything is laid out in a far more useful way. For the last month, I've been tracking what I eat with MyFitnessPal, and have been tracking my weight every morning with a Withings wifi scale. It's extremely powerful when the data is collected effortlessly, and for the first time in my life, I'm on track to really change some unhealthy habits. Entering food in MFP is still a PITA, but I've managed to keep it up so far. It's been one of my dream projects to design a personal dashboard like this, especially in the style of the Iron Man movies. This website has exceeded everything I imagined. I hope it becomes open source one day, and that I can contribute a ton of new integrations and sections. Or if not, please let me pay to use this service! Welcome to the space guys, it looks like a great product, I've signed up for the beta and I'm really looking forward to checking it out. What follows is by no means meant as a slight on the creators of the product, it looks like they've done a sterling job and I wish them every success. I launched an almost identical product (in terms of functionality) http://geckoboard.com into private beta a little over a month ago and have been steadily improving it since then (adding a bunch of new APIs including Freshbooks, GitHub and an API with the ability to load custom data to your status board). Despite being first to market, accumulating a couple of thousand beta testers and reaching out to TC we only get a one line mention in the article. Getting on Techcrunch et al. is not the be-all and end-all but as a single founder outside of Silicon Valley situations like this reinforce the notion that you're swimming against the tide. It's inevitable that sort of thing happens but it really does go to show one of the prime benefits of joining YC; the exposure and access you get is second to none and the best leg up a startup could hope for.

I really rate this book so it’s great to see it getting some publicity! I think one misnomer is that to do stats right you just need to do the math right. But what analysis is done in the first place, the overall methodology and how that data is interpreted are more often where we go wrong. At Geckoboard we’ve been trying to raise awareness of some of these issues. Heres a poster we put together: https://www.geckoboard.com/learn/data-literacy/statistical-fallacies/

Looks like a hosted equivalent of GeckoBoard[0], which I have used successfully for uptime and key metric boards that are displayed in common room dedicated TV screens etc. One key is getting decent render performance on low-spec hardware (i.e. a Rasberry Pi). Not something you usually think about when building/evaluating a web app, but those low-spec "boxes" crawl on most modern web-sites. Yet there shouldn't be any reason why a dashboard couldn't be rendered on them! I wonder how Cyclotron performs with it's JS heavy front-end on those types of dedicated dashboard devices? Does anyone use http://www.geckoboard.com/ for this type of thing, out of interest?
bijanv · 2013-10-15
Just an FYI that Dashing - http://shopify.github.io/dashing/ (Open Source) and http://www.geckoboard.com/ (Paid) already have tons of modules available if you're looking to get going right away. I also have a Raspberry Pi powering our dashboards but it really struggles to render some javascript, especially if we switch between tabs every 30 seconds. Any ideas for the cheapest possible way to power the TVs other than a Raspberry Pi? Edit: Also https://ducksboard.com/ exists as well as a paid option

For keeping track of signups/revenue/expenses/profit on a daily/monthly basis, I use custom widgets on a GeckoBoard status board. They poll a handful of scripts that combine some SQL queries into various products' customer/payment databases, with arrays of fixed expenses and some formulas to estimate variable ones like payment transaction fees for the current month. For actual bookkeeping, QuickBooks Pro. http://www.geckoboard.com
lukeholder · 2013-04-10
I dont see the point of this app. Dashboards with far better API integrations: http://ducksboard.com/ http://www.geckoboard.com/ http://www.telemetryapp.com/ http://shopify.github.io/dashing/ When I say I don't see the point, why would you limit the dashboard to an app? web browser based delivery is far better suited to this concept - The ability to display the boards on any size screen or hardware.
sneak · 2012-06-04
Is this substantially different than GeckoBoard? http://www.geckoboard.com/
csytan · 2012-01-27
Hey thanks, That's my site! I don't have much traffic at the moment so I was surprised to see some referrers from HN. To give credit where it's due, the front page was inspired by these guys: http://www.geckoboard.com/
joshuacc · 2011-08-05
In reverse order. 2) Using something like Geckoboard would probably be helpful. http://www.geckoboard.com/ 1) The ones I've seen (not in person) are for the purpose of informing the entire team about company/project status at a glance. Presumably when everyone sees the stats, optimizing for them is much more top of mind.

The charcoal background made me think of Geckoboard (http://www.geckoboard.com/), but that's more of a dashboard metrics visualizer than a task list.

If you don't want to build your own there are also a couple SaaS solutions: http://www.leftronic.com/ - A YC company that productizes the Panic concept. Very impressive list of investors. http://www.geckoboard.com/ - Slick looking and comes with access to a bunch of core services.

I just happened to be scouring around for a good JS charting library yesterday. Does anyone here have any experience with one? I am trying to build a dashboard, much like http://www.geckoboard.com/ and I need to be able to display nice charts (all kinds - bar, stacked, pie) with real-time data. I looked some into flot (http://code.google.com/p/flot/) which uses the canvas, and Raphael (http://raphaeljs.com/) which uses SVG (and is not really a charting library) but they have gRaphael for that purpose. But with the plethora of options out there, I figured I ought to ask here at HN. Any suggestions, anyone?

Getting a good dashboard is really a hard task. It varies from business to business. The important thing is to identify some metrics and KPIs you want to be aware of. Initially, it would show very few metrics or charts that can give you a quick snapshot of the business so you can see how it's performing very quickly. But it should be possible to dig into more data and visualize it in many different ways to get better insights. On most apps I've worked, we've always opted to build out own dashboard because there was no out-of-the-box solution. We would gather data from inside the app and also use some external services like mixpanel or google analytics. Also, lately I've been moving towards more custom charts and graphs made with d3.js which is extremely powerful. Nowadays there are a couple of products that let you craft your own dashboard like https://www.leftronic.com/ and http://www.geckoboard.com/ You can get some ideas there and by looking similar products. MixPanel and KissMetrics also provide some inspiration. And doing a search on dribbble can give you some ideas also: http://dribbble.com/search?q=dashboard A really good book on data visualization is "Designing with Data" by Brian Suda: http://www.designingwithdata.com/
