Work on building up your personal brand equity. In less buzzwordy terms, build up your social network, become known for your opinions, and develop an audience of some sort. Gary Vaynerchuk's videos are worth watching on this topic - http://www.garyvaynerchuk.com/ I follow a lot of people on Twitter who aren't working on a specific idea right now, but when they do, you can bet I'll be checking it out and cheerleading for them! The same applies for those following me. Become known, get us to follow you and enjoy what you have to say, and then when you DO get "that big idea" you'll actually have some users and publicity out of the gate :) With that said, if you /do/ have a Twitter account or whatever, link us up! But your blog only seems to have one post..

You should lawyer up as others advise, but I must be missing something because the problems you listed are definitely not the client's problems. For example, it isn't their problem you didn't filter candidates well enough, etc. I would lawyer up, but also work on killing them with kindness. Make it right. Gary-Vaynerchuk the heck out of them. You could do a number of things depending on your subscriber demographics. If you want to go the advertising route, it's best to go directly to relevant businesses. See this - http://garyvaynerchuk.com/post/78967452/want-to-get-advertisers-on-you… The other way is to just sell something directly to your readers. First test a few different products (some rare history book, photobook etc) by adding a link to the bottom of your email and seeing which one gets the most clicks. Once you know what's popular, buy it in bulk and sell.

just go to one of "social media" experts video blogs and watch a bunch of their videos: i.e. someone like http://garyvaynerchuk.com/

Document your journey and be yourself rather than trying to create story lines and a "persona". Gary Vee Quote: "In very simple terms, “documenting” versus “creating” is what The Real World and the Kardashians is to Star Wars and Friends. And don’t get confused—just because you’re “documenting” doesn’t mean you’re not creating content. It’s just a version of creating that is predicated more on practicality instead of having to think of stories or fantasy—something that’s very hard for most people (including myself)." - https://www.garyvaynerchuk.com/creating-content-that-builds-your-perso…

If you want to ask companies about problems they're facing you'll need to learn sales. I've been a freelancer for 12 years and these books changed my life... * How to Become a Rainmaker: The Rules for Getting and Keeping Customers and Clients by Jeffrey J. Fox * The Dollarization Discipline: How Smart Companies Create Customer Value...and Profit from It by Jeffrey J. Fox * The Brain Audit: Why Customers Buy (And Why They Don't) by Sean D'Souza * The Ultimate Sales Letter: Attract New Customers. Boost your Sales by Dan S. Kennedy * The Challenger Sale: Taking Control of the Customer Conversation by Mathew Dixon and Brent Adamson Also watch a few Gary Vaynerchuck Keynotes and you'll get ideas on how to add value first, specifically read this blog post https://www.garyvaynerchuk.com/working-for-free-the-debate/

What a childish, pompous headline. Turns out the guy was in a meeting at the time and has since called everybody back: > Update: Gary was in a meeting, he finally called me back and he’s been answering a lot of calls since this post. He was a very good sport about the whole thing. http://garyvaynerchuk.com/post/4091744015/tech-crunch-adstruc-article It's a non-story, it does nothing except maybe illustrate what a dick Erick Schonfeld is.

Re: how to do this - watch this video of Gary Vaynerchuk picking up the phone and selling an ad: http://garyvaynerchuk.com/post/78967452/want-to-get-advertisers-on-you… (it isn't rocket surgery!) Re: fair prices - Totally depends on your content, your market, and how targeted you are to the advertiser's audience. There are plenty of sub-$1 CPM display ads, and I've been a part of buying $170 CPM ads. But you should only worry about this only after you have sold out your ad inventory. Anything is better than nothing.
