I was just playing with Coder's VS Code fork (what this solution uses for VS Code) the other day [1] I want to love it. It makes a very specific use case I use much nicer. I can leave code on a remote server with all the compute power I need to build and run my project, and edit the file I'm working on with VS code's editor without having to sync files around. It does, however, have a few big caveats that killed it for me. It doesn't block any of the browser things that would leave the webpage. Notably, if you hit Ctrl-W to close a file tab because of muscle memory, you'll close the browser tab. Also, if you hit back on accident like I apparently do all the time, you'll go back to the blank tab page. In both of these cases, you'll lose any unsaved state. Also, the extension repo it's pointing at isn't MS's live repo. There are apparently reasons for this, but it means you don't get the latest version of extensions, which was annoying for a specific extension I've gotten used to. I also had issues with VS Code getting confused about state when my connection to the remote box was less than ideal. All in all, I really wanted to like it, but for truly remote cases, I'm back to using Mosh to interact with the remote box, and a simple tool I wrote ages ago to handle rsyncing the local files to the remote box to build and run them there. Oh this is awesome, will take a look. I’ve had rough experiences with Kubeflow in the past, recently I’ve been using Coder workspaces https://coder.com/ and it’s pretty good but less ML/AI integrated (but, stitched together with Ray autoscaling nodes it can get really nice)

I'm using https://coder.com for all my development containers. I've got mine hooked up to a k8s cluster, but anything that you can provision with Terraform can be used (e.g. docker containers).

For someone wanting to use nix for the premise of the article (dev environment management), I'd encourage you to checkout Coder[0] which I'm self-hosting personally for my company, but will prove useful once I hire. [0]: https://coder.com

I'd guess that there was a mixup: https://github.com/gitpod-io/openvscode-server For what it's worth, we have been using code-server instead in prod (prod being internal) for over a year now. https://github.com/coder/code-server https://coder.com/docs/code-server/FAQ#whats-the-difference-between-co…

I am a cloud developer and i must say i quite like the ipad experience. I have a server, which runs coder[1] (basically vscode). I also tried to play around with the vs code tunnels, but they did not feel very stable. Because it doesnt have public IP i access it using Tailscale[2]. I especially like the pen, which allows for nice notes and also diagrams. The other nice thing is, that even when i work from some place with bad wifi. I can still download and upload large files because the server is connected to optics. [1] - https://coder.com/ [2] - https://tailscale.com/

Still self hosted alternative https://coder.com and Eclipse Che https://www.eclipse.org/che/. Both of them allow you to host VSCode or Theia on your own infrastructure.
nudded · 2022-08-09
very similar, but seems a bit more polished is https://coder.com, you can write your own terraform modules and run it on whatever cloud you want.

You might be thinking of https://coder.com >"Code-server is the primary open source project we maintain. It allows developers to use a browser to access remote dev environments running VS Code"
oneweekwonder · 2021-09-06
I wonder why coder.com[0] is not mentioned, the ide is also open-source[1]. As for cloud9 they closed their source and license when they moved to v3, but there is still a v2 descendant called Pylon IDE[3]. There is a startup here in Austin trying to create a business around the idea: https://coder.com/ I think some people see value in it as a security feature, or ease of development environment setup. There are also collaborative code editing features. You can both get into a file and type in it at the same time. You can get into your project and work on it from any machine, anywhere, even a phone, potentially. Personally though, I would never take a job where you do most of your coding in the cloud.

This is an interesting development since there is already a multitude of online IDE's that are based on Visual Studio Code: - StackBlitz: https://stackblitz.com/ - Theia: https://www.theia-ide.org/ - Coder: https://coder.com/ Overall, this is a prime example of one of the synergies that Microsoft was able to create from the GitHub acquisition which was the missing puzzle piece. Microsoft now has control over a complete software development pipeline: a development platform (Windows), an IDE (vscode, vs), a code versioning host (GitHub), continuous integration (Azure Pipeline), deployment (Azure). If Microsoft can leverage its control over this complete chain to make the whole experience integrated and effortless as it's doing with Visual Studio Online here, it could well take over the market, especially in corporate environments.

Not surprised given VSCode's legacy as Monaco. Will be interesting to see how the (at least) two companies offering hosted VSCode will respond. https://coder.com/ https://stackblitz.com/ (Used inline in the documentation for LitElement/Polymer: https://lit-element.polymer-project.org/)

The articles mentions this at the end, but Coder offers a remote VS Code environment: https://coder.com/ https://github.com/cdr/code-server Anyone have experience with it?
colecut · 2019-03-17
There is web based visual studio at https://coder.com I use C9 which is another web based IDE.. it doesn't have all the power features of a jetbrains ide but it is nifty and should meet the needs of most developers. Lots of options outside of vi!

ive tried slack before, but a challenge is how well you can get results returned back in a way where you can actually see what it did and give proper next steps getting a PR back and being able to put comments on it is fine, but ive had middling success getting qcli at least to actually match the comments with the code that was commented on. i get the sense that there isnt any training with the comments inlined well on a diff:/ it doesnt have to be a vpn though, i was on an oauth webbrowser terminal, and things like coder[0] let you run vscode on the browser, including on your phone browser. there's also happy coder[1] which i tried using to connect between the new builtin android linux vm, and skip all the remote stuff entirely, but the phone would inevitably kill the terminal runbing claude, killing the whole thing. you can currently just run claude from your phone in that, which only has the problem that when the vm crashes, all you can do is wipe the partition. How does this compare to https://coder.com?

Hmm. We find that GH/MSFT customers come to us (especially Microsoft Azure DevOps customers which have been abandoned) and GH is categorically providing non-answers of "we are investigating offering on-prem" but they have done that for a long time now - ie. a classic sales tactic to keep MSFT aligned people hopeful vs saying no. Microsoft has been retiring on-prem products as a business strategy for over 12 years now. Why would GitHub be the snowflake exception? Somewhere, in some CVP's mind GitHub ES is already EOL (look at GitHub.com/enterprise they are already muddling the meaning of "enterprise") If you look at /.codespaces/bin or /workspaces/.codespaces/shared on GitHub Codespaces you'll understand how tightly coupled GitHub Codespaces is to Microsoft Azure thus on-prem isn't going to happen. The likely path they could do it would be like JetBrains Spaces does it "configure in our IAM/ARM key and we will provision Azure/AWS virtual machines" via GitHub Enterprise Server. $ ghuntley /workspaces/.codespaces/shared $ grep sku * environment-variables.json: "skuName": "Standard_F2s_v2", If you want further information check out https://coder.com/blog/github-codespaces-coder-and-enterprise-customer…

Creator of the original https://github.com/coder/code-server and co-founder of https://coder.com here. Microsoft’s code-server uses their official extension marketplace, allowing LiveShare, Pylance, and other proprietary extensions in their browser VS Code experience. Their license prevents users from “hosting it as a service” meaning you can’t productize their code-server like you can ours. We’re disappointed that Microsoft chose to release under the `code-server` command-line name. Our community has produced countless blog posts, videos, StackOverflow questions, etc. that will become difficult for our users to find. This naming decision suggests that Microsoft aims to replace our code-server instead of coexisting. We will continue developing our code-server until Microsoft’s has parity. As for Coder, we’re focusing more on the platform side (https://github.com/coder/coder) and less on making IDEs work remotely.
