Am I correct in assuming you've used Cesium (https://cesium.com) for the globe visualization? Or is it something else?
OmarShehata · 2020-07-03
(Disclaimer, I work at Cesium) we've been working on making this easier. If you have a bunch of GeoTIFFs of satellite imagery you can drag and drop them into our platform and get WMTS/TMS tiles you can stream into whatever client. See: https://cesium.com/docs/tutorials/uploading/ Would love to hear your feedback.

The pricing page shows different commercial plans at $149 or $499 per month: https://cesium.com/platform/cesium-ion/pricing/

For anyone curious about what Cesium does, they build 3D viz of real-world maps / places / architecture you can import into your program. For e.g., they allow embedding 3D world maps and places in Javascript / webpages https://cesium.com/platform/cesiumjs/ They allow integration into Unreal Engine https://cesium.com/platform/cesium-for-unreal/

For people complaining about the name, USD has been already a thing publicly since at least 2013, and internally probably fair bit before that: https://www.cgchannel.com/2013/10/pixars-usd-system-the-new-super-alem… I did also happen to find small comment about the name from an interview: > Just a little fun an anecdote, the original name ... And we were looking at the extension for the file. Technically when I do something that says layered scene description. But the extension LSD we thought it was a little too trippy, so we decided that we couldn't go in that route. So that's why the universal came, because it feels a little too far, but technically it was supposed to be a layered scene description. But anyway, we couldn't use that. https://cesium.com/open-metaverse-podcast/the-genesis-of-usd/

This was built with CesiumJS https://cesium.com/platform/cesiumjs/

I’m sure those in the industry know about it. There’s slso Cesium for Unreal: https://cesium.com/platform/cesium-for-unreal/.

It could probably be done with Cesium for Unreal, although I question weather it's a good idea to provide shooter games in real locations. Perhaps a less violent sandbox game would be a better idea. https://cesium.com/platform/cesium-for-unreal/

How about Cesium.js? You can drop files onto the globe. https://cesium.com/cesiumjs/cesium-viewer/

This site is full of levels extracted from games: https://noclip.website/ The full Subnautica map is probably bigger than any of those though. There are lots of options out there for streaming large 3D models in WebGL. One I'm familiar with is Cesium Ion 3D tiles: https://cesium.com/blog/2018/10/09/ion-3d-tiles-pipeline/

The Tactical Service Oriented Architecture[1] has a Battle Command Display module that is built on top of Liferay[2]. There's other C2 systems that use Cesium[3]. I don't think the TSOA devs are pushing their code upstream, but that's just a guess. I think GIS content is typically more straightforward than CAD. Most of it is 2D, stuff like vector rivers and streets, or a heightmap (terrain) as a raster bitmap. You can import that kinda stuff into many games and use it as a real-world location. But they are moving into 3D, such as using drone photogrammetry to map cities at once: https://pro.arcgis.com/en/pro-app/2.8/help/mapping/layer-properties/wh… Sometimes those 3D layers are built from simple extruded polygons, other times they are more detailed meshes. But AFAIK even the most complex don't typically approach CAD complexity. More like the 3D buildings you see in Google Street View or the old Microsoft Flight Simulator. Any GPU capable of running an Unreal Engine game should be able to handle that sort of stuff. But it's really cool to see them going this way. It's always been a dream to play a AAA game in a real-world city (kinda like Watch Dogs or GTA) but where you can import any city you want. You can already kinda do this with terrain with Cesium for Unreal (https://cesium.com/platform/cesium-for-unreal/) or for other games like Cities Skylines (https://en.number13.de/cities-skylines-how-to-import-heightmaps-in-the… but I think those typically are limited to basic heightmaps. Being able to translate not just buildings, but hydrology, vegetation, population density, etc. all from public GIS data, and simulate a whole game from them...? That'd be really awesome.
