I believe Dries's words in his apology post were sincere, so I do submit that as evidence but understand you may find him untrustworthy. However, the willingness of people who practice BDSM who actually work for him to speak out on that post provides even more compelling evidence that Dries isn't known for discriminating on that basis:
http://buytaert.net/comment/132641#comment-132641
If Preston and other BDSM practitioners like him are fired from Acquia or removed from the Drupal community, I'll eat whatever crow you care to dish up.

The original source would be this link: https://www.garfieldtech.com/blog/tmi-outing
Followed by this by Dries Buytaert, Drupal BDFL: http://buytaert.net/living-our-values
And then there was this other response from Larry: https://www.garfieldtech.com/blog/tmi-part-2
And besides techcrunch, there was this other piece by inc.com: http://www.inc.com/sonya-mann/drupal-larry-garfield-gor.html

Drupal lead, Dries, also wrote a read-worthy post on the release:

While this is mainly about technical issues, it does mention Acquia/Dries, so I'll give my 2 cents to that part:
There is a lot of FUD these days about Dries and Acquia's role in Drupal. Dries wrote some blogposts that try to answer the most common questions people have.
The criticism about the bug count explosion in Drupal has already been addresses with an "Issue queue thresholds for Drupal core":
http://buytaert.net/issue-queue-thresholds-for-drupal-core
The role of Acquia in all of this: "Does Acquia suck up all the Drupal talent?":
http://buytaert.net/does-acquia-suck-up-all-the-drupal-talent
"Why Acquia acquired Cyrve and GVS":
http://buytaert.net/why-acquia-acquired-cyrve-and-gvs
Full disclosure: I work for Acquia. Not directly on the Drupal codebase, but I have a tech position. They really are a good people with the best intensions for the community and Drupal. They try to give back by e.g. free trainings, sponsoring camps and hackathons, having "gardening days" where people work on anything (old modules, new modules, core bugs, ...) that they think is needs some work, free hosting for any Drupal community project/blog/website and many many things more.

And the response from Dries, the man who made the decision to ban Garfield from the Drupal project: http://buytaert.net/living-our-values
He seems to allude that not all the facts are out, so it's hard to tell if this decision was a knee jerk reaction or a reasonable response.

> It's the perspective of the other Drupal members who ousted him that his beliefs are not in fact cabined in that subculture, but in fact bleed out of it into his interactions with the broader world. They cite evidence.
I didn't see any evidence cited in Dries Buytaert's blog [1] that the ousted member's BDSM stuff affected how he interacted or behaved within the Drupal community. In particular, I didn't see anything cited that indicated they had any problem at all with him until they found out that he was a member of that BDSM community. Did I overlook some evidence?

The Techcrunch article has a broken link to Dries' blog post:
http://buytaert.net/living-our-values
The Techcrunch article focuses too much on BDSM in general. If I understand correctly, the problem here is on the specific aspect of viewing women as inferior and the fact that this contributor wields significant influence in a community where (like many free software communities) gender is a problem.
This isn't very different than being anti-gay and being the lead of a big free software project. Some people can pretend that their personal opinions have no impact on their work, but that's very rarely the case. If there was more diversity, this would probably be less of an issue.

Dries Buytaert's response, linked from his (at this time) most recent tweet: http://buytaert.net/tag/living-our-values
Living our values!!! JFC...
I don't think he understands the actual implications of the values he claims to be defending.

Here is another large project (Drupal) that decided against React because of the PATENTS file:
http://buytaert.net/selecting-a-client-side-framework-for-drupal
"The Virtual DOM, among React's most compelling features, has also seen its core ideas filter into other framework projects. But more importantly, React is licensed with what I believe to be a potentially unacceptable patent clause, which states that an organization can no longer use React once it sues Facebook for any (unrelated) patent infringement. This has already generated some concerted pushback from both WordPress's Calypso and React contributors."

For those of you in this field...how influential is the NYFed trying out (and apparently being satisfied with) Julia to other government agencies, computational economists, and/or academics? Is it "OS X is Unix/BSD-based" influential, or "Whitehouse.gov uses Drupal [1]" influential?

Indeed.
Drupal 8 does exactly this. Use Drupal 8 for data modeling and storing the data. Use its forms if you want to. Retrieve the data using GraphQL and do all the rendering yourself. It even is capable of a hybrid model, where it serves pages BigPipe-style, and you do client-side rendering for the most dynamic/interactive parts.

As a Drupal developer, I approach it as a right tool for the right job. And familiarity with said tool is also a factor.
The future looks promising:

The new database layer is... nice-ish, but what ever happened to Dries Buytaert's prediction/dream of finally having an object-relational mapper in Drupal (http://buytaert.net/drupal-predictions-for-2008)? Last I heard was that a Doctrine integration got rejected chiefly because "it would slow Drupal down".

Drupals founder, Dries Buytaert got some reflections on this too. http://buytaert.net/whitehouse-gov-using-drupal

Drupal needs work too.
http://buytaert.net/drupal-usability-testing
It went through a usability test and surprise, surprise, the whole Drupal nomenclature is actually off-putting for the average Joe.
Usability is difficult. Very difficult. We'll see the fruits in Drupal 7/8. As a programmer/hacker/ia/ui guy -- I find all fascinating.
The general trend I think is UI is beginning to come of age.

I don't agree with the decision. But, he was not ejected for S&M hobbies. He was ejected because he was perceived to believe that women are subservient to men (evidently this was part of some of his online writing).

This isn't working with just any C or OS code. I'd assume that. It would take a modified or clean-slate runtime whose language can work with it. It might not tolerate virtualization, either. As I was heading for bed, I decided to at least Google to see if anyone did anything with FPGA's and GC's to not leave your head with nothing to think on tonight. ;) Here's what I found:
FPGA-aware garbage collection in Java (2005)
https://buytaert.net/files/fpl05-paper.pdf
(Modified Jikes VM to use FPGA coprocessor for collection. Result was good performance with around 2.32% overhead on memory-intensive benchmarks.)
Fine-Grained Parallel Compacting Garbage Collection through
Hardware-Supported Synchronization (2010)
http://www.ikr.uni-stuttgart.de/Content/Publications/Archive/Hv_Garbag…
Stall-free, real-time collector for FPGA's (2012)
http://researcher.watson.ibm.com/researcher/files/us-bacon/Bacon12Stal…
(This is on one chip with tiny resources for GC around 1% and 4-17% overhead.)
Maybe I can get something better for you after some rest. Note that my comment to the other person has more details of where I was going with this.
