Something actionable that will probably be useful for the folk here. Try and put together:
- a good summary of Getting Things Done (definitely not the whole book), like: https://www.blinkist.com/en/books/getting-things-done-en
- a Trello template for GTD, or whatever software you use, like: https://blog.trello.com/gtd-getting-things-done-maximizing-productivit…
- think of the whole thing as a set of interconnected OODA loops of different time scales
GTD and OODA actually go very well together - it explains for example why the easiest way for GTD to fail is to skip the weekly cleanup. You're just left with the daily loop, which is very much not enough. Proper GTD has organized loops up to around one year. It also a great way to force you to think on longer time scales, stuff like "what do I want to do the next 3 months?".

I've also gone through several iterations including text files, excel and google sheets. My latest approach (and personal favorite) has been the GTD approach with Trello detailed here: https://blog.trello.com/gtd-getting-things-done-maximizing-productivit…

https://blog.trello.com/why-context-switching-ruins-productivity . This might not apply to your situation, but it's worth examining whether or not trying to fill the time would negatively impact your productivity.

Yeah, whatever is doing the resizing isn't doing a great job. You can see the original looks fine if you remove the query string: https://blog.trello.com/hs-fs/hubfs/desktop-shortcuts-condensed-pt2@2x…
It's also pretty darn big though.

>> We will continue operating as a standalone service, and we will continue to integrate deeply with all of the tools available out there that help people collaborate (and you can look forward to some great integrations with HipChat, Confluence and JIRA).

These sort of product celebrations (with users providing feedback on what the product means to them) are fantastic. As a user it's great to be able to see what a product means to others too and how they're using it. We had a similar page for a website we run and reading user feedback is so much fun, companies should do this sort of thing more often.
Trello only reached 500,000 users in July of this year, that's some spectacular growth: http://blog.trello.com/trello-is-now-500000-strong/

May I recommend you check out Trello with the "Trello Card Repeater[0]." Trello without the repeater is a really powerful way to organize your life, turning your life into a series of big cards with tasks in it, that give you a sense of accomplishment when you close one.
You then tack on automatic cards which appear on a schedule (e.g. "take out the trash," "clean this," "fix that," etc) and you have a even more useful productivity tool. You could of course use a traditional digital calendar for these with reminders, but pop-up reminders can be distracting/overwhelming, or ignored. A Trello card can sit in a bucket waiting until you have time in your schedule.
You can then combine it with something like the Pomodoro Technique[1] to help with uncontrolled procrastination.
Best of luck!
PS - There are other competitors to Trello which offer a great list experience (e.g. KanBanFlow, Microsoft Planner, etc). They're all good. Unfortunately few offer the Card Repeater. KanBanFlow offers built in Pomodoro timers tied to particular cards which is a huge win (Trello has third party support for Pomodoro timers, but that doesn't follow you cross-device).

I encouraged our IT team to try Trello (now owned by the same company, Atlassian) which sports a JIRA integration[0]. Either due to the fundamental limitations of the integration or a botched setup, it's useless. There seems to be two copies of each ticket (one JIRA, one Trello) that can be in different states. It was not just another UI for the same underlying data.
I do hate JIRA. JIRA adds all the beauty of a government bureaucracy to what should be post-it note management. It's hard to overstate how demotivating JIRA is to my work and especially to my planning. Worse, everyone in the organization has to use it.

Sounds like you're looking to go on sabbatical? A lot of bigger companies have active sabbatical leave policies. If you're happy with your current company, you could talk to HR and see their position on it, as I think it's becoming a fairly common practice in tech and elsewhere.

That's a total straw man argument.
It doesn't take "a month of fiddling" to add an integration like this. It's already readily available[0] and has been for half a decade. It's also $24 per month — not $5 — at their current scale. These aren't amounts to be sniffed at either. The $720 a year they're paying for "frontend hosting" is not far off what I pay my accountant.

You seem to equate slacking off with failure, when there's plenty of evidence to the contrary: https://blog.trello.com/slacking-off-speed-up-productivity
It's important to separate what we feel is productive work, from what will actually produce the most work on aggregate across society.
I think we can build a world where those who feel they need downward or lateral pressure to get things done can have this, but not at the expense of everyone else.

Trello can do this repeating checklist to an extent, and it has the progress bar that shows on cards as you complete items.

Thanks, super helpful as another bootstrapping just-2-founders team.
Also - for the public roadmap, trello works really well for this

I've seen public Trello boards[1]. We use Jira tickets - you can have a customer feedback project that enables customers to create tickets without seeing the full board[2].

Why is this screenshot rendered so badly? https://blog.trello.com/hs-fs/hubfs/desktop-shortcuts-condensed-pt2@2x… From the URL it might have been dynamically resized?

Most people - but there are plenty that don't or times when people don't. On planes for example (there are that have it but many that don't.) Do a search for "offline trello desktop" or look in the comment at https://blog.trello.com/trello-mobile-offline.
But I don't understand once you've solve the offline storage and syncing problems for one platform(sync/conflict resolution strategy), why it's so difficult on other platforms.
Thanks for the link - but I didn't see how it's anything like trello. I need something like kanban, but not specifically a kanban tool (trello is general is how you can use it - it doesn't have to be limited to workflows)

Sounds like a good reason for Clubhouse.
Do you think the same would be possible with Trello connected to Github either directly http://blog.trello.com/github-and-trello-integrate-your-commits/ or via Zapier?
