Thanks, that's a good question. We are more targeted towards small-time content producers than the major movie production companies. Think mom and pop store selling custom bags vs Nike bags sold at Walmart. We run on Google Appengine & Amazon Cloudfront, so there shouldn't be any problem with scaling. We also use http://zencoder.com/ (ycombinator '10) for video encoding, and they've been great!

At http://voucherify.io (API platform) we try to follow Zencoder's advice http://blog.zencoder.com/2012/05/31/selling-to-developers-is-neither-b… To put it in a nutshell, this means generating valuable content and implementing helpful libraries and integrations. Then we try to share it with our target (developers, technical product managers, CTOs) through ProgrammableWeb, GitHub and Quora. See e.g. - http://www.programmableweb.com/api/voucherify - https://github.com/voucherifyio/coupon We're a team of 3.

Zencoder - San Francisco - Ruby Engineers, Video Engineers, and Dev Ops Zencoder transcodes millions of videos each month for a thousand customers like Khan Academy, IGN, NFL, and Amazon. We're a small team of really talented engineers solving hard problems and making developers happy. Great product, office, team, and perks. http://zencoder.com/jobs We also have opportunities in Boston for engineers at Brightcove (who acquired Zencoder last year): http://www.brightcove.com/en/company/careers/open-positions

Unless I'm missing something, this is nothing that can't already be done by http://Zencoder.com

The best API design I have come across so far is from Zencoder [1]. Their documentation is spot on and they also have a nice little API builder. I found it interesting to study while doing designs for our own API. [1] http://zencoder.com/api/ EDIT: After reading http://thereisnorightway.blogspot.jp/2011/02/versioning-and-types-in-r… I am not so sure anymore. They still have quite an awesome set of examples though.

Try Zencoder, their API is really easy to use and their support is quite helpful as well: http://zencoder.com

There are a few outfits working on the resource intensive encoding problem. The only one that comes to mind at the moment is zencoder.com but I'm sure there are others out there if you look. http://zencoder.com/
modoc · 2010-05-18
You check out Zencoder? http://zencoder.com/ Another HN community gem imho.

+1 for HLS. HLS is an important aspect in saving money while using the CDN's. They allow for different streaming rates, and the player can download the video in chunks vs the entire video which saves money on bandwidth costs. Encoding videos is important too, especially if you have users uploading videos, or you are getting videos from different sources, you can never depend on 3rd party sources because they'll always throw a wild card file type at you unexpectedly. If you don't want to do it yourself with ffmpeg, there are services out there like: https://zencoder.com/en/file-transcoding https://aws.amazon.com/mediaconvert/
mtrimpe · 2016-01-08
But for that technology to work you have to re-encode the source stream for every desired bandwidth range which is not exactly cheap [1] [1] https://zencoder.com/en/file-transcoding/pricing

Take a look at the Zencoder (YC W10) API: http://zencoder.com/en/ It's since been acquired by Brightcove. [Disclaimer: I work there.]
benologist · 2013-12-06
I think I would try just one plus AWS-for-emergencies first. Or possibly http://zencoder.com/en/ until the expense justifies investing in your own hardware.
wmf · 2013-04-04
It's KVM on Sandy Bridge; effectively the same as EC2 cluster compute. http://blog.zencoder.com/2012/07/23/first-look-at-google-compute-engin…

"hey I see you played a video... here's a CTA" ... there are some alert()'s lying around in your "cases"... guessing they were meant to be removed :) Is the USP here the video recording? If I was comparing to services like zencoder, transload.it, pandastream etc [1] http://zencoder.com/en/ [2] https://transloadit.com/ [3] http://www.pandastream.com/
d33pika · 2013-01-29
I am also curious about the how fast the AWS service will be. Zencoder is pretty fast. http://blog.zencoder.com/2011/10/18/zencoder-benchmarked-2x-10x-faster…
gklitt · 2013-01-29
Does anyone with experience using Zencoder (http://zencoder.com/en/) see advantages/disadvantages of this new Amazon service compared to Zencoder, which has been around for a while? Zencoder is owned by Brightcove and I'm sure they will be fully capable of putting up a good fight, but I can't imagine this won't take a significant amount of business away from them...

Don't let the press fool you: there are plenty of founders aged 30+ building innovative businesses. The average age of a startup founder is 40: http://www.thedailybeast.com/newsweek/2010/08/20/innovation-grows-amon… Also, YC has plenty of founders over 30: http://blog.zencoder.com/2010/09/21/doing-y-combinator-in-your-30s/ Personally, I founded my first company in YC when I was 30 (Parse).
malkia · 2011-12-02
That was posted few weeks ago. It's from zencoder's site, comparing to other 3 competitors (probably biased), but shows that there is already competition: http://blog.zencoder.com/2011/10/18/zencoder-benchmarked-2x-10x-faster…

What program language are you going to be using? I'd recommend checking out the available integration libraries (http://zencoder.com/docs/integration-libraries/#libraries) that we and our customers have created to simplify your integration with Zencoder. You can read our docs (http://zencoder.com/docs/) and API reference (http://zencoder.com/docs/api) for more information about the options you can set. Our API Builder (https://app.zencoder.com/api_builder) will also help you get started with seeing how some of the options fit together. As for S3, we work in Ruby and use RightAWS (http://rubygems.org/gems/right_aws). That would handle the transfer of files from your users to S3. If you're using another language I'd recommend checking online for an S3 library compatible with your language.

Good point. At the end of the day, we're not a video encoding service, so our users should use us in the same they would their own Amazon EC2 instance with ffmpeg. Here's ffmpeg's take: http://www.ffmpeg.org/legal.html Here's Zencoder's take: http://zencoder.com/docs/codecs-and-formats/#licensing
Quoting http://blog.zencoder.com/2010/09/21/doing-y-combinator-in-your-30s/ Does YC accept founders older than 30? Yes. And according to PG, age is neither a penalty nor a bonus. He writes: “I don’t actually know the numbers. We don’t keep track. But I know there haven’t been any with founders in their 50s, and only 2 or 3 with founders in their 40s or their teens. Most founders are in their 20s or 30s. Completely guessing, I’d say 15-20% have founders in their 30s.” (That was a year ago, so the numbers may have changed.) Basically, the age distribution of YC companies is pretty close to the age distribution of applicants. More YC founders are 25 than 35, but more 25-year-olds apply than 35-year-olds. (Paul has an essay[3] where he says the ideal range to start a startup is 22-38. As far as I know, that isn’t a rule, just a suggestion. YC has accepted plenty of people younger than 22, and at least a few over 38.) [1] https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=809885 [2] https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1642525 [3] http://www.paulgraham.com/start.html Which is to say, there were a bunch of people in our batch that were over 25. 25 might have been the median age of founders in the batch.

The MPEG-TS container (from 1995!) is also a lot less efficient than the more modern MP4 container. Overhead can range from 5% to 30% with bad muxing settings.
