xefer.com · Personal blog · on HN since 2008

Xefer is a personal site of data visualizations, JavaScript experiments, and small web projects, including a Wikipedia radial graph and the 'interrocolon' proposal.

What HN saysHN links it for its Wikipedia 'all roads lead to Philosophy' chain and the interrocolon punctuation proposal, which commenters respond to warmly.

What HN people wrote when they linked it

Some years ago I made the case for an interrocolon, the purpose of which I do not see addressed in that list: "when the direct object of an interrogative statement references an example, a URL or another statement in a follow-on block of text". I encounter uses for this all the time especially when texting. https://xefer.com/2008/03/interrocolon

> However I don't know if that reflects some deeper truth about the world, or just my bias in how I answer the questions. It's the same reason why you always end up on "Philosophy" if you're browsing Wikipedia and consistently follow the first link in each article. Here's the path for "Airplane": Airplane Fixed wing aircraft Aircraft Vehicle Motion (physics) Natural science Science Knowledge /* we know where this going... */ Fact Proof (truth) Argument Philosophy Try it yourself: http://www.xefer.com/wikipedia

Reminds me of... https://xefer.com/wikipedia Builds some very cool chain of links all leading to Philosophy

Hm, using the site linked in the article[1] x86 seems to be only 10 hops away from Philosophy. [1]: http://xefer.com/wikipedia

I remembered a discussion about this before, once in 2010 and once in 2013. Already in 2010 Lorum Ipsum was translated to random words that are very prevalent on the internet: "hello world", "learn more" and "free on": http://www.xefer.com/2010/10/lorem-ipsum Therefor I don't think that Google Translate is used by spies to communicate plans about China. Even if all translated words were insidious, then still Occam's Razor tells us it is unlikely that a public translating service is used as a modern-day number station. The 2013 discussion had translations like: "Cisco Security" and "Corporate Japan": http://googlesystem.blogspot.com/2013/06/lorem-ipsum-google-translate.… That's statistical machine translation for you.

Here is a similar visualization of the phenomenon from last year http://xefer.com/wikipedia

I found this visualization to be really interesting, powered by Yahoo Pipes: http://www.xefer.com/twitter/ericflo

>You can't discuss anything important and uncertain without running in to politics. I do understand your exact point. This wide umbrella of "everything is politics" is akin to "all roads lead to philosophy" : https://www.xefer.com/2011/05/wikipedia That said, I can also what understand what people mean when a dinner host says, "let's not discuss politics". (Previous comment about that interpretation: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=14473441) Even though I perfectly understand what roenxi means by "You can't discuss anything important and uncertain without running in to politics.", I'm still able to grasp what the dinner host means by "no politics". Likewise, the HN moderator dang tried the experiment of "no politics for a week". However, people didn't want to use the "dinner host" meaning and would rather litigate on the "but all roads lead to politics" meaning to make dang look naive in his social civility experiment.
