McAfee, the marketing nightmare that just keeps on giving. I genuinely don't understand why McAfee the company hasn't changed its name yet. In the meantime, some greatest hits: How to Uninstall McAfee (NSFW-ish) https://youtu.be/bKgf5PaBzyg The McAfee guide to bribery in the third world http://www.whoismcafee.com/the-travel-guide/

John MacAfee has a great guide. Context is important. You need to know the situation, you have to be situationally aware. You can't just start showing money (maybe alcohol or other "currency" depending on their penchants are more apt). You have to know a bit about the locals. See http://www.whoismcafee.com/the-travel-guide/

> Only a severely paranoid person would take the time to write a year's worth of blog entries on the off chance he became a fugitive. Even then, what advantage does it give him? Some misdirection, certainly, but simply disappearing would be just as effective. McAffee stated this in one of his earlier blog posts [1]. The blog is administered by a third party, and although a lot of the content is written by McAffee, most of it appears to be pre-prepared. [1] http://www.whoismcafee.com/if-i-am-captured/

In order to make the most of your travels, you need to first understand that, throughout much of the Third World, there is a smoothly functioning “system” in place that has evolved over centuries. From the First World perspective it is a “corrupt” system, and indeed, at the higher levels there is no other word for it, and this blog’s purpose is to remove the brutality and horror of such high level corruption. At the lower levels, however, the system contains an element of grace and humanity, and this lower lever is all that most people will ever encounter. You might still call this lower level “corruption”, but that’s not a helpful word if you want to acquire the most effective attitude for dancing with it. I prefer “negotiable”. It focuses the mind on the true task at hand when dealing with officialdom and removes any unpleasant subconscious connotations. So if you can view the following tools and tips as negotiation guidelines it will help bring the necessary smile to your face when the situation requires one. The only way I can rationalize your post is by assuming that 1) you've never done any type of drugs, especially stimulants, and 2) you've yet to form an understanding of how the media likes to sensationalize stories to the point of making them up. If you look at any of McAfee's current writings, posts, or comments, or his behavior on camera, or his health/appearance (that is, for a 70 year old man!), you'd see a man that's about as far away from a manic drug addicted bath salt face-eating user as you can get. When someone asked him on the blog if he was suicidal - McAfee said... Don't have a knife. And I enjoy living. Suicide is absurdly redundant. The world, from the very begining, hurls viruses, accidents, hungry animals, defective DNA - and uncountable more - in an attempt to kill us. It always succeeds. Suicide is simply aiding and abetting. http://www.whoismcafee.com/ Clearly a man that has lost his faculties.

Thanks for your story. McAfee has written an extensive guide on how it works in central America: https://www.whoismcafee.com/the-travel-guide/

He really seems like character pulled straight from Far Cry game.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DiN3rq6kqKI http://www.whoismcafee.com/the-travel-guide/

Here's a blog article that should be mentioned: http://www.whoismcafee.com/a-clear-and-present-danger/

Apparently he's already on a plane to Miami, but who knows if that's true with how often he says things like "sorry guys, had to lie to you to protect myself". http://www.whoismcafee.com/i-am-on-the-plane/

The original source there isn't Gizmodo; it's McAfee's own posts on the Bluelight drug forum. He has admitted these are his posts, though he now says it was a hoax: http://www.whoismcafee.com/stuffmonger-and-bluelight/

This means the VICE metadata of the image the published was correct, and his "I edited the EXIF data" story was a lie: he was in Guatemala (specifically, along the Rio Dulce in Parque Nacional Rio Dulce). Also, just yesterday he posted saying that he would be meeting with Guatemalan officials this morning: http://www.whoismcafee.com/guatemala/
danso · 2012-12-06
Yeah I don't think thhe VICE screw up was planned...according to McAfee himself http://www.whoismcafee.com/guatemala/ Vice Magazine reporters are indeed with me in Guatemala. Yesterday was chaotic due to the accidental release of my exact co-ordinates by an unseasoned technician at Vice headquarters. We made it to safety in spite of this handicap. I had to cancel numerous interviews with the press yesterday because of this and I apologize to all of those affected
joejohnson · 2012-12-04
This whole thing is hilarious: http://www.whoismcafee.com/another-apology/ Also, why does he have like 40 ways to share an article? I'd never even heard of half of these social networks.
sp332 · 2012-12-04
"Desperate" about sums it up. Here's the latest bit, in which he retracts the other bit: http://www.whoismcafee.com/guatemala/
angry-hacker · 2012-12-04
The blog post where he wrote the fake coordinates was a clever trap is missing.. at least I can't find it. Edit: http://www.whoismcafee.com/i-am-safe/ (404 now...)
biff · 2012-12-03
He is now apparently safe with his girlfriend outside Belize with a couple of folks from Vice Magazine, and the guy that was arrested was deliberate smokescreen on McAfee's part. http://www.whoismcafee.com/i-am-safe/ If the plot gets any thicker it'll be impenetrable soon. Guy should have written chess software while he was at it.
aptwebapps · 2012-12-03
Now he says he safe: http://www.whoismcafee.com/i-am-safe/ Last three sentences bring the usual dose of crazy.
drivebyacct2 · 2012-12-03
Sounds like John may have been a step ahead. (He claims to have editted the EXIF data in an apology to VICE mag.) http://www.whoismcafee.com/another-apology/
morsch · 2012-12-03
Vice Magazine's post that McAfee has safely left Belize: http://www.vice.com/read/we-are-with-john-mcafee-right-now-suckers His own post on the topic, saying he'll be returning to Belize: http://www.whoismcafee.com/i-am-safe/ Gizmodo post on the location revealed by the EXIF data: http://gizmodo.com/5965295/vice-magazine-just-accidentally-revealed-wh… The apology on his blog comes after those three articles. Surreal.
