I recommend that you try out WezTerm[1]. I used Warp before switching to WezTerm, but Warp took always a long time to open the first time. WezTerm on the other hand is extremely snappy and easy to configure. After having tried iTerm2, Alacritty, Kitty, Warp and others I might be forgetting, I don't think I'll ever move away from WezTerm. It just works. [1]: https://wezfurlong.org/wezterm/index.html

Just wanted to note for everybody who really loves this feature. There is some options here though Wezterm terminal supports multiplexing from the box: https://wezfurlong.org/wezterm/multiplexing.HTML Also, there is Hyper terminal, and standalone protocol to implement multiplexing https://www.reddit.com/r/commandline/comments/q5mj11/htm_a_cross_platf… If you know other options, please share. I work in windows, but at home I use macos, so I stick to wezterm. I use it with single config for both platforms (config is written in Lua)
bbkane · 2024-04-17
I'd also recommend https://wezfurlong.org/wezterm/index.html . I switched to it from iTerm2 for the reasons in https://github.com/bbkane/dotfiles/tree/master/wezterm#iterm2 (primarily a simpler Lua config to reason about and version control)

The new generation of terminals are nothing like what you’re describing: GPU acceleration, full color support, font shaping, support for ligatures, built-in support for multiplexing, SSH and more. WezTerm [1] is probably the best example right now but there are others. These aren’t your father’s terminals. [1]: https://wezfurlong.org/wezterm/
theobeers · 2022-04-05
Don't forget WezTerm, which is imo the best of the recent crop of GPU-accelerated terminal emulators implemented in Rust (with built-in multiplexing!): https://wezfurlong.org/wezterm/ Having now tried Warp, I think it's fine. I doubt performance will be a problem. What concerns me more is that it's not open-source.

I originally installed WezTerm because I switched from Kubuntu to Ubuntu and wanted some of the features of Konsole (infinite scrollback, searching the scrollback) without actually installing Konsole (I know you can install it under Gnome too, but it just felt... wrong). And yes, it instantly grew on me, although (as I can see from this article) I have barely scratched the surface of its configurability. My only complaint is that its many features are not really discoverable. Sure, the documentation is really good, and the author is very engaged and helpful, but... one example: I looked up how to select large blocks of text using just the keyboard, I did it once, said to myself "I have to remember this!", then promptly forgot it and now I'm back to selecting text with the mouse like an absolute noob because all in all for the few times I do this it's faster than googling that documentation page again... (in case you're wondering, the page I mean is https://wezfurlong.org/wezterm/copymode.html, not https://wezfurlong.org/wezterm/quickselect.html, which sounds like what I was looking for, but is something completely different - also very handy and a great idea, but not what I was after)

If you code in Java, and like TUI (console type applications), then you might enjoy Jexer: https://gitlab.com/klamonte/jexer I started Jexer in 2013, and off-and-on it's gotten better. I think my favorite part has been crossing paths with other terminal emulator ecosystem folks over the last few years. This release brings a few prettified effects inspired by other projects that you are all hopefully quite familiar with (notcurses, chafa, and vtm): * Translucent windows, including images under/over each other and text. * Animated/pulsing text * Animated gifs * A new XtermVideoPlayer example that uses ffmpeg/JavaCV to play movies inside a text-draggable window. (No audio though.) * New button styles: round, diamond, left/right arrows. The button ends and shadows are drawn with images so specific font support is not required. * A _much_ faster and _much_ higher quality sixel encoder. * Different window border styles: single, double, none, and rounded corners. * A femme theme option. Some screenshots are posted here: https://twitter.com/AutumnMeowMeow/status/1489228917030502407 It's on maven and Sourceforge. <dependency> <groupId>com.gitlab.klamonte</groupId> <artifactId>jexer</artifactId> <version>1.6.0</version> </dependency> Terminals that are known to work include: * xterm https://invisible-island.net/xterm/ - X11 - Linux * contour https://github.com/contour-terminal/contour - OpenGL - Linux, OS/X, Windows * foot…

Thanks for giving it a try! I recently moved house and have limited mental bandwidth while I'm setting up the new place--since I don't want to drop the ball on resolving these, I'd appreciate it if you would file separate GitHub issues for those items you'd like to follow up on so that I can find and work through them as time allows! 1. Tab titles are set using escape sequences, typically OSC 0, 1 or 2. You can find examples for configuring shells to emit those online, for example: https://superuser.com/questions/84710/window-title-in-bash Terminal.app defaults to snooping the local process list to set titles; wezterm doesn't do this as the terminal may not be local (eg: could be remote ssh or multiplexer session) and using escape sequences gives definitive control. 2. I'd love to troubleshoot this with you; please file an issue! 3. There are currently a set of open and related IME/macOS issues at the moment. You may want to try looking at https://wezfurlong.org/wezterm/config/keys.html#macos-left-and-right-o… and fiddle with those options, but you may be left disappointed until the root of those issues are resolved! 4. This is a consequence of being a cross platform program rather than a macOS-first application. There isn't a way to keep the GUI running without any Windows today. Perhaps in the future?

Any plan to implement Copy Mode similar to WezTerm? https://wezfurlong.org/wezterm/copymode.html
linsomniac · 2025-01-31
Copy Mode and Quick Select are two things in Wezterm that I use all. the. time. The other killer feature is the remote multiplexing, because it gives a better experience than ssh+tmux. https://wezfurlong.org/wezterm/multiplexing.html
arusahni · 2025-01-24
Do you have your terminfo set up properly? I used to experience bad glitching when working with vertical splits, but it went away once I applied this. https://wezfurlong.org/wezterm/config/lua/config/term.html
barnabee · 2024-12-27
My most used "unique" feture of WezTerm and one of the main reasons I'd struggle to move to any of the alternatives is quick select mode[0] which massively speeds up copying or typing file names, hashes, IDs, etc. from the output of commands. [0] https://wezfurlong.org/wezterm/quickselect.html
jitl · 2024-12-27
Yes, Wezterm has this. https://wezfurlong.org/wezterm/multiplexing.html I haven’t used it yet, and it requires you install Wezterm on the remote. Ideally Wezterm could push a mux server executable to the remote host if needed.
onli · 2024-12-26
Wezterm does have tabs, and their related keyboard shortcuts are configurable. See https://wezfurlong.org/wezterm/config/lua/keyassignment/SpawnTab.html for a starting point in the config.
dizhn · 2024-11-29
https://wezfurlong.org/wezterm/config/lua/keyassignment/PromptInputLin… I was looking for a way to get a user prompt within wez and came across this page which has an example for what you asked for "Example of interactively renaming the current tab".
drchap · 2024-11-03
Have you tried WezTerm? It is a modern, performant, and full-featured cross-platform terminal written in Rust. https://wezfurlong.org/wezterm/index.html
xintron · 2024-10-23
A good reason for Lua would be the example at the bottom of this page: https://wezfurlong.org/wezterm/config/launch.html#the-launcher-menu Custom settings depending on the environment you're in, here setting up PowerShell on windows only. Allowing the same flexibility through JSON/YAML would not be as easy and simple.
jamesgeck0 · 2024-10-03
If you want to add "New Window with Profile..." to WezTerm, you can probably hack something into either `launch_menu` [1] (for starting different shells), or `augment-command-palette` [2] (for adding items to the command palette). 1. https://wezfurlong.org/wezterm/config/lua/config/launch_menu.html?h=la… 2. https://wezfurlong.org/wezterm/config/lua/window-events/augment-comman… Yeah, it takes some screwing around, but programming extremely specific features just the way you want them is peak WezTerm experience.
panki27 · 2024-09-02
> Care to share the config ? My config is a little overwhelming, but you'll find your answers here: https://wezfurlong.org/wezterm/ssh.html > Are modern term emulator like wezterm capable of pulling that off these days ? https://wezfurlong.org/wezterm/multiplexing.html
sidmitra · 2024-08-12
https://wezfurlong.org/wezterm/colorschemes/ ^ There's a host of built-in color schemes.
tambourine_man · 2024-08-12
This looks very interesting. I’ll have to look at it closer later. https://wezfurlong.org/wezterm/multiplexing.html Thanks for posting
jpeeler · 2024-08-12
Can lazy internet help me replicate kitty's word selection (https://sw.kovidgoyal.net/kitty/kittens/hints/) in WezTerm? I believe one would just have to adjust the config for "quick select": https://wezfurlong.org/wezterm/config/lua/config/quick_select_patterns…
9front · 2024-08-12
WezTerm is available for Windows, Linux, and FreeBSD also. See https://wezfurlong.org/wezterm/installation.html
technojamin · 2024-08-12
Not out of the box, but I use Hammerspoon to implement a global hotkey to show WezTerm: https://github.com/jaminthorns/environment/blob/a609e81f3f4179d3c60b60… I don't have a keybinding to hide, but you could easily achieve that by inspecting the active window with `hs.window.focusedWindow()`/`hs.window.frontmostWindow()` and making the behavior conditional based on the application: https://www.hammerspoon.org/docs/hs.window.html#focusedWindow In WezTerm, you can control whether the terminal is always on top with the `ToggleAlwaysOnTop` action: https://wezfurlong.org/wezterm/config/lua/keyassignment/ToggleAlwaysOn…
shzhdbi09gv8ioi · 2024-05-22
Give wezterm a try: https://wezfurlong.org/wezterm/index.html It is cross OS (learn once and use the same terminal in Windows, macOS and Linux), actively developed and written in rust
liveoneggs · 2024-05-21
I installed https://wezfurlong.org/wezterm/index.html today after seeing those release notes and am liking it so far after adding the five-ish lines of config, which were way easier to use than those clunky panels
selectnull · 2024-05-21
I'm really happy with WezTerm https://wezfurlong.org/wezterm/

My terminal emulator of choice, WezTerm, has this feature built in [1], so there's no need for using `reset`. Perhaps your terminal emulator has something like it, too? [1] https://wezfurlong.org/wezterm/config/lua/keyassignment/ClearScrollbac…
Quot · 2024-02-01
You're right! That's pretty neat. I always thought terminal emulators were just simple text displays. It looks like Wezterm even has preferences for how cursors are displayed. https://wezfurlong.org/wezterm/config/lua/config/cursor_blink_rate.htm…
