i don't expect this to win you back, but i can't recommend this highly enough:
http://www.webupd8.org/2013/06/better-font-rendering-in-linux-with.htm…
you can choose between different system font rendering styles, including macos and windows

I love how the rounded window corners are now (finally!) properly anti-aliased [1].

I use this PPA: http://www.webupd8.org/2012/01/install-oracle-java-jdk-7-in-ubuntu-via… -- which has no Java files but can automatically install Java when it gets a new version. It seems decently up to date (though I would recommend never running Java on the web anyway, unless you have to because you live in Denmark).

I had some success following this[1], though it didn’t seem to handle transferring lots of files at once very well.

Not really a mirror but webupd8 host a quote and a video :
http://www.webupd8.org/2012/01/hud-ubuntus-new-smart-menus-announced.h…
I'm still not sold, I found the UL-Corner positioning greatly aggressive. I'd put it in the bottom personally but I'm used to the Unix 'bottom command line' habit.
Otherwise it's one step closer to a contemporary desktop command line, in the video the guy even typed 'undo' in inkscape, made me smile. I guess having this common iterative search of nested menus will greatly help users, as it helped many of us in the shell or emacs (or any system providing this idea)

I think this is the client I want to use for replicating my desktop like Max Hodak describes[1]. It sure has enough options for target storage.
It boasts client-side encryption, but the author says that "In terms of speed, Syncany only transfers the changes of files, so if you change only a couple of bytes of a 100 MB file, only those bytes which have changed will be transferred (+ some more)[2]."
Sounds like it uses homomorphic encryption[3]. I don't have the skills to read the code and know whether it's well done. Can anyone comment?

Pretty sure this is what you're looking for. It's a plugin for Pulseaudio that adds arbitrary DNLA/Chromecast devices.
http://www.webupd8.org/2016/03/how-to-stream-audio-to-chromecast-or.ht…
Edit: And if you use Wine with Winamp, you can then steer Winamp to use chromecast as well. And as an aside, I also used Wine to make Windows programs (not the desktop) remote-run by running ssh crankylinuxuser@server -X -f "wine winamp.exe". And with Pulseaudio, redirection is trivial.

I recall running idea with openjdk and observing very ugly font rendering.

If memory serves, Google runs a custom build of Ubuntu which they've never released--probably due to licensing with Canonical. My guess would be that the Linux Google Drive client may, too, have some restricted licensing. We do know they have one, however:

I think it could be some issue with hardware acceleration then? The link is a bit old so I don't know if things are still the same, but I used this long ago.

> The flipside of course is that if you're on any kind of Linux, even getting your font rendering to something like palatable can be all manner of obnoxious
Have you tried Infinality on Linux?

you could search (and watch) with mps-youtube:

incidentally, you could also just use google.

The JDK8 is available for Linux.
You won't find it in the official repos, though, because they have the OpenJDK implementation. For serious java development you should use the Oracle one.
A reference, linked to by the Ubuntu wiki itself:

You can compile it for Linux now that it is open-source, I believe people have made binaries too, e.g: http://www.webupd8.org/2014/05/install-atom-text-editor-in-ubuntu-via-…

I am waiting for the OpenJDK release on Debian. In the meanwhile, you can also use the WebUpd8 PPA:

There is a way to get Silverlight as a plugin in your standard Linux browsers. It's called Pipelight[0]. Yes, it uses Wine, but not for the rendering, so it's not a horrible experience.

The Ubuntu Gnome spin looks very promising with the combination of the Ubuntu ecosystem and the Gnome desktop environment.
the only fly in the ointment (for me at least) is the distros uncertain future as Canonical developers are not keen on moving to the latest version of Gnome (http://www.webupd8.org/2013/10/ubuntu-1404-lts-to-stay-on-gtkgnome-38.… and longer term the focus will be on QT and other technologies as Unity and Mir mature.

If you are using Ubuntu, here is how to install the Nemo file manager, which is from Linux Mint and based off of Gnome 3.4 before things were removed: http://www.webupd8.org/2012/12/how-to-install-nemo-file-manager-in.htm…
I've been using standard Ubuntu as my sole OS for over 6 years now. I'm most likely switching to Linux Mint or Xubuntu when I get a chance.

Initially I tried to submit this http://www.webupd8.org/2013/05/ubuntu-might-get-new-simplified.html since it has all the key info and better title, but HN just told me to stop spamming. Is Webupd8 banned or what's going on? (Also OMGUbuntu submissions are just not shown at all anywhere.)

I'm trying to find an easy way to get them all.... A quick search turned up this linux script which uses Mercurial.
