Walmart Labs (https://www.walmartlabs.com) | Carlsbad, CA | FrontEnd Tools Engineer | Full Time | Onsite I've been a developer for quite some time, and professionally for over 12 years. Like many of you, I've been frustrated with the software development process and the manual toil we have around that process - we want to solve problems in software, not in the way we write, test and deploy it! That's why I'm excited by what my team at Walmart Labs does - the Developer Experience Tools team exists to create an amazing experience for the developer both within the Walmart Organization and outside with our Open Source contributions (see: http://testarmada.io/). We're hiring right now, for a Staff level engineer to work on a set of automated tools to make measuring Client Performance of web and native mobile applications a breeze for developers. We use javascript, nodejs, reactjs, redux and graphql heavily, but we're very much of the opinion that you should use the right tool for the job so there are no unnecessary limitations. Our Carlsbad office is AWESOME, and the location - reasonably close to San Diego, right next to the ocean - is pretty fantastic. The office is a new location, a big upgrade on the previous location, freshly opened in October with onsite gym, and a short walk to the beach. If you’d like to find out more or just chat about the role, message me here - or you can apply here:…

Walmart has been pushing innovation for decades now: https://www.walmartlabs.com/. How do you think they got so huge?
derimagia · 2020-03-30
They have pushed digital pretty hard. Walmart even has https://www.walmartlabs.com/. Both have been adapting pretty well to Amazon and offer 2 day shipping options as well.

Related: Walmart Labs[1] is supposedly doing some cool dev work and is hiring. (I'm unaffiliated but know people who've worked there) [1]https://www.walmartlabs.com/

> I get the feeling Walmart is desperate to compete and will buy anything these days when all they really need to do is build a Web site that is easily navigable and works. You think a company with their resources could afford the talent required to build a site like AMZN has. They have Walmart Labs [1], which to your point, doesn't seem to have the ability for whatever reason (don't discount the talent, its entirely possible that the bureaucracy in Bentonville, AR is holding them back). Yes, see Walmart Labs to get an idea of what they're in to: http://www.walmartlabs.com/

Take the folks at Walmart Labs (http://www.walmartlabs.com/) for instance, NodeJS hackers working on the backend powering Walmart's mobile commerce. A small percentage of hackers will get a chance to work on problems and devise solutions at the sort scale they work on. You certainly won't see similar challenges if you limit your scope to companies with less than 50 people and less than 10 million in funding. Unless you are a founder or maybe a first hire that would seem to preclude you from almost any interesting company coming out of SV in the last 15 or so years.

This. Node.js and Rails are sexy right? Show your boss how. Do a video screen capture of the time savings you get. Also, execs like what we used to call "The NASCAR Slide™" - which is a presentation slide with all of the logos of companies who use those technologies. The more Fortune 500 companies, "the faster your NASCAR car goes". Pro Tip - Just give them his link http://www.walmartlabs.com/ Note - Be prepared to have the ugly discussion around support and ecosystem. These are arguably the biggest cons to "newish" frameworks. The problem for any technologically lagging organization is that they don't have the resource (both human and capital) to support change.

Maybe not particularly well known: Walmart Labs: http://www.walmartlabs.com/ New York Times Labs: http://nytlabs.com/

Walmart is also pushing hard into R&D, see http://www.walmartlabs.com/ . Of all the traditional retailers, I'd say Wallyworld is the most invested in 21st century retail tactics and actually doing a decent job of it.

Walmart is releasing OneOps. It's supposedly their internal platform to be cloud-provider agnostic. I've not used it (yet) and haven't heard of anyone else using it but it sounds like a step in that direction. http://www.walmartlabs.com/2015/10/walmartlabs-oneops-open-source/

Its a Multi-Cloud Orchestrator. It lets you abstract multiple cloud providers, so you can say use Azure, S3 , Rackspace Openstack, your own openstack and your own VMware all at the same time, and have unified management. At the moment it supports any cloud with a OpenStack endpoint/integration. Blog post: http://www.walmartlabs.com/2016/01/oneops-now-available/
