hdajackretask on Linux does that, part of alsa-tools. Blog post by author from 2011: http://voices.canonical.com/david.henningsson/2011/11/29/turn-your-mic… I believe similar utilities exist on Windows at least with some cards.

Is this blogspam? It's a blog post about a blog post. The actual blog post from the developer in question is at Canonical: http://voices.canonical.com/alan.griffiths/2017/04/12/why-mir/.

I admit this is biased, heavily so in fact, but most of what I know about autotools comes from this: http://voices.canonical.com/jussi.pakkanen/2011/09/13/autotools/ Which... the reason it sticks out with me is that really good rants are a lot more memorable to me than people talking about what software they like, which is probably not a fair way to evaluate software.

AH ! That was a nice joke, have my upvote. :) For the curious: http://voices.canonical.com/jussi.pakkanen/2011/09/13/autotools/ (tldr: autotools won't work on windows, you need a shell emulator, like cygwin, and gcc) Premake is nice, also. But CMakes tend to work better for a big project.

> Is sound still a problem on Linux? Yes. My desktop has mostly just worked for a few upgrades now, but new versions on my HTPC running XBMCbuntu have been hit and miss and taken some screwing around with the sound. This article from less than a year ago addresses some basic screw-ups that people on linux do trying to fix their sound troubles: http://voices.canonical.com/david.henningsson/2012/07/13/top-five-wron… That rings true to me.

spam. Directly go to http://voices.canonical.com/ubuntuone/?p=1023 instead I think it was discussed earlier anyways.
