Serverless DBaaS providers and HTTP APIs are a huge new development. Mongo Atlas Serverless, Planetscale (MySQL/Vitess https://planetscale.com), Upstash (Redis, https://upstash.com) and Neon (upcoming Postgres). They add features like merge requests on DDL and make managing DBs as easy as managing Lambda functions. This reduces maintenance overhead significantly.

We've been using https://upstash.com/ which charges per request, but has a nice SDK that allows easy Redis connections in Cloudflare Worker & AWS Lambda environments. It's been a very nice experience so far. Are there are any good open source libraries that use REST connections to Redis so you can use it in "serverless" environments?

I have a hosted code-first agent builder platform in production, so I respond these question a lot from our customers. 1. Probably the best is fly.io IMHO. It has a nice balance between running ephemeral containers that can support long running tasks, and quickly booting up to respond to a tool call. [1] 2. If your task is truly long running, (I'm thinking several minutes), probably wise to put trigger [2] or temporal [3] under it. 3. A mix of prompt caching, context shedding, progressive context enrichment [4]. 4. I'm building a platform that can be self-hosted to do a few of the above, so I can't speak to this. But most of my customers do not. 5. To start with, a simple postgres table and pgvector is all you need. But I've recently been delighted with the DX of Upstash vector [5]. They handle the embeddings for you and give you a text-in, text-out experience. If you want more control, and savings on a higher scale, have heard good things about marqo.ai [6]. Happy to talk more about this at length. (E-mail in the profile) [1] https://fly.io/docs/reference/architecture/ [2] trigger.dev [3] temporal.io [4] https://www.inferable.ai/blog/posts/llm-progressive-context-encrichmen… [5] https://upstash.com/docs/vector/overall/getstarted [6] https://www.marqo.ai/

Hi all, We are working on our Workflow product at Upstash, and there is a feature we are very excited about. Basically, you can let the Upstash Workflow wait for a third party API call without costing you any runtime. Once the API call finishes, your workflow can carry on from where it left off! In our example we call an endpoint which takes ~20 seconds. Comparing the cost of waiting for such a request in Vercel and using Upstash Workflow results, we observe ~90% cost reduction. You can learn more about Upstash Workflow from our docs https://upstash.com/docs/qstash/workflow/getstarted The app is open source and you can find it here https://github.com/upstash/qstash-js/tree/main/examples/workflow/image…

I'm guessing the authors are making an internal pitch that a16z should invest in upstash[1]? I'm not feeling it personally - the whole hypothesis seems definitely not aligned with what I've seen. I've never seen people trying to build transaction guarantees into their whole microservices stack using Fancy New Startup Tech[tm]. What I have seen a lot is people building transaction guarantees into their stack using something like event sourcing and cqrs. You pay some complexity but what you get in return is a transaction guarantee when events are processed which guarantees consistency when you need it (eg financial transactions etc), and the view part is eventually consistent but is always accurate as of a point in time. [1] https://upstash.com/about doesn't show a16z as an investor right now.

Super cool. Did you do any research on MSK vs other hosted Kafka alternatives? I just came across: https://upstash.com/blog/serverless-kafka-launch
