Ubuntu. I got a bit further in FireFox by following the instructions below, but it seems it still won't work until FF6.

Ok, I was in your situation a month ago, and dove in. EC2 is great. It's easy to setup.
I suggest starting with ubuntu, as there is a plethora of resources for it if you are new to system administration
(start with this AMI http://developer.amazonwebservices.com/connect/entry.jspa?externalID=1… )
Doesn't really matter if you are on osx, linux or windows once you are setup really, but get elasticfox for firefox, it does all the trivial things (starting an instance, etc) for you. very cool extension.
Just make sure you have a good backup plan for your data, as in any crash, your data is lost.
It is much more like getting a dedicated virtual account at a regular provider, so if you are used to control panels and everything like that, you'll have to install them yourself.

LatencyTOP might help you track down the cause.

Try and squeeze discord into a 400x400 window (or something similarly small and out of the way) to put in the corner of your screen. Mission impossible.
Squeeze an IRC client into 400x400, and you'll still have plenty of room to read what's going on.
IRC sample (it's not 400x400, but you should get the idea):

Discord sample for comparison:

I think there's a lot that could be done to make Discord more desktop real estate friendly. It's one semi-dealbreaker for me too. I can't have one single chat app require almost one whole new monitor.

Read the first chapter based on linux in 'Counter Hack reloaded' by Ed Skoudis. yes the book is focused on security however after reading it I found the file system in linux makes far more logical sense to me than windows.
from a big picture perspective.

on a side note I added links from that page that are useful
my own .02 cents is:
