Thanks for re-hosting it :-) I'm a sucker for "do modern things on old hardware". Just saw a great project at Maker Faire where some guys re-purposed old WWII radar tubes to make playable video games, one of which was flappy bird. http://tubetime.us/ and http://www.labguysworld.com/Project_ESCRTs_001.htm

There are CRTs with long-persistence phosphors too; they found applications in radar and the like: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phosphor#Standard_phosphor_types https://tubetime.us/index.php/2015/10/31/crt-phosphor-video/ http://www.labguysworld.com/crt_phosphor_research.pdf The P10 phosphor there claims "Persistence from several seconds to several months"(!)

The youtube video in the article shows a very short clip of a radar screen updating. Would be cool to see one in person if there's any still around. I just found https://tubetime.us/index.php/2014/06/09/p10-dark-phosphor-the-skiatro… too.

a link with more info: http://tubetime.us/index.php/2019/01/19/announcing-the-snark-barker-a-… (especially check out the sidebar, which has links to posts about soundblaster operation)

I had absolutely no idea that the original SoundBlaster had embedded firmware running on an 8051. It never occurred to me that our PCs were loosely-coupled piles of microcomputers all the way back then. (Now I'm off to go learn what that firmware was doing...) Some background I dug up quickly: Snark Barker creator's blog: http://tubetime.us/index.php/2019/01/19/sound-blaster-1-0-principles-o… http://www.os2museum.com/wp/sound-blaster-the-french-connection/
