Hi!
Our widgets are open source: https://github.com/uploadcare/careful-uploaders
To handle videos, I'd recommend you to check out http://transloadit.com/ . They are something like our competitors, but I believe we have different targeted audience.
We've been thinking about splitting files in parts and everything, but not right now.
Thank you for your suggestions!

I'm at a similar stage, and I have settled on Transloadit (http://www.transloadit.com) for encoding and storing on S3, and the HTML5 VideoJS player (http://www.videojs.com) - which falls back on FlowPlayer for Flash, for playing the output video on the website. My experience with all three of them has been fairly positive, if not excellent.

I wrote about this a few months ago: http://simonwillison.net/2009/Nov/23/node/ - it's exciting because it's asynchronous (like Ruby's EventMachine and Python's Twisted) but makes it almost impossible to screw up your event loop. JavaScript is an excellent fit for asynchronous programming.
http://transloadit.com/ is one startup that's using Node.js - it's particularly good for handling large file uploads since it can handle tens of thousands of them in parallel on a single server.

Like you, we use pre-signed S3 upload urls. From there we use Transloadit [0] to crop and sanitize and convert and generate thumbnails. Transloadit is basically ImageMagick-as-a-Service. Running ImageMagick yourself on a huge variety of untrusted user input would be terrifying.

> What differentiates our API from others is that you can chain together multiple “actions” as part of a single API request.
https://transloadit.com offers similar composable workflows in a single request, and supports more file types besides PDFs.
Disclosure, I am a founder :)

The company behind it (https://transloadit.com/) is also impressive.
> We handle file uploads, resize, crop and watermark your images, make GIFs, transcode your videos, extract thumbnails, generate audio waveforms, and so much more.
All that with a generous free tier.
(Obs.: I'm not related to these people, had never heard of them until now.)

Sounds like https://transloadit.com could've served you well there.

In regards to handling video upload and encoding, have you checked out Transloadit[1]?

I've been a user of their product https://transloadit.com/ for about a year now for video encoding and am very happy with it. The API is elegant, the whole service is reliable and fast.
These guys know what they're doing.

Disclaimer: I'm a friend of the main author and have been peripherally involved (mostly watching from the sidelines) in this project.
Valid points, IMO. Those sound like use cases that might not have been contemplated originally (the idea for the spec grew out of the author's work here: https://transloadit.com).
That said, the spec, and the code around it are both still very much evolving, and are welcoming of input. You can join us on GitHub or in #tusio on Freenode.

"hey I see you played a video... here's a CTA"
... there are some alert()'s lying around in your "cases"... guessing they were meant to be removed :)
Is the USP here the video recording? If I was comparing to services like zencoder, transload.it, pandastream etc

Check out http://transloadit.com There is the competition in the market. And they have also nailed the client-side security thing.

The developers wrote about using node on their blog: http://debuggable.com/posts/parsing-file-uploads-at-500-mb-s-with-node…
felixge · 2010-07-13
We're announcing/launching https://transloadit.com/ later on today. The service (not the website) is written entirely in node.js.
So far we have processed 55k internal jobs for our test users, where each job is usually tied to 3 or more command line scripts executing. Probably not as a big as GitHub, but afaik, we're the first SaaS/IaaS product build with node.js.
wizard_2 · 2010-05-18
A hacker I know (who has I team I believe - the debuggable.com guys - both successful bloggers and core teamembers of the cakephp community) has been working on transload.it for a while, it's a pretty good service despite still being in beta, but I haven't put it through its paces like I'm sure you would. (I was working on a wordpress plugin.) It sits on ec2 and will save right into your s3.

I don't know their plans for the full release, but they could be a way to break out of your lock in with encoding.com.

Disclaimer: I work for Transloadit
At my job we have an API that lets you do this to "burn in" subtitles onto a video.
A demo for this: https://transloadit.com/demos/video-encoding/add-subtitle-to-video/
mark-r · 2017-07-06
I particularly like this example image for testing: https://transloadit.com/blog/2010/10/is-your-image-scaling-software-up…
You might be able to do this as a 3-part process instead of expecting the resizing to handle it natively. But that brings up a good question, does the new SIMD goodness work on anything other than 8-bit data? You couldn't do linear in anything less than 16 bits.

I just went over this with a colleague to deal with UGC upload.
Here's a list of services in this space:

I was recently looking for services that could handle resizing and cropping. Personally I prefer the ones that act like a proxy, so I can store the images in my own S3 bucket. Here are the services I found:
