Yes, please! This aligns with my rants on the subject [1] because I want all software to use UTF-8 by default. In my experience as an application developer nearly all of my character encoding grief has been caused by an application or library somewhere in my overall system architecture not using UTF-8 by default. This is followed by me needing to find how to configure it. I am by no means a character encoding expert, but I want everything to use UTF-8 unless there's a very particular need for something else (I'm still waiting to find out what that might be).

The manifesto's idea that files should have a unique address which any machine can access reminds me of Brian Hauer's rant, which argues that each application should have a single instance with a unique address (for a given user) that any machine can access (http://tiamat.tsotech.com/pao). Put the two together and a person's entire digital life would seamlessly follow them between machines.
I like the proposal of making caching a central design element to work around today's bandwidth limitations. I work with large-ish (a few TB) scientific datasets, and it isn't pleasant to have to choose between (a) storing everything on network storage and suffering slow IO or (b) storing everything locally on every workstation and suffering the need to synchronize data.

Seems very similar to "4K is for programmers" which was written when 4k monitors/TVs had just been released.

I, personally, own one of those TVs (Seiki 39") and both love and hate it. I've always seemed to buy TVs for day to day computing because you generally get more cutting edge features for better prices (My first flat screen was a 27" WestingHouse TV. First 4k, Seiki. ETC).
Economics of scale factor in heavily - more TVs will be sold than computer monitors leading to better prices. Which is why I could get a Seiki 4k for $400 when similarly sized 4k "Desktop" monitors were going for $1000+.
The most annoying thing has been "Turn of monitor, Computer considers it unplugged". So you go from 2 monitors to 1 - and all the icons rearrange. Computer goes to sleep? Monitor turns off... disconnects... Annoying.
The price of saving $600+ for 4k (At the time).
I've recently upgraded to a smaller "computer" monitor that's better suited for gaming and desktop use... and the Seiki is now my computer room Plex Player.

This might interest you: https://tiamat.tsotech.com/pao
> Personal Application Omnipresence, PAO. It's a theoretical computing model where your applications are available to you from any device.
> My ideal for computing consists of applications that run on a central application server that I own. I want each application to be a single running instance to which I can connect and then interact with, from anywhere, from any device.

That author has some interesting thoughts on 4k in general as well as the Seiki brand.

I think in everyone's rush for "convergence" they just forgot about the desktop.
Exactly. "Desktops are dead" has become a self-fulfilling prophecy. For most users a new desktop computer wouldn't give them any significant benefits over the 5 year old one that they already have, so of course they're not going to buy one. Meanwhile, if hardware and software manufacturers had actually come up with ways to take advantage of their massive CPU and GPU power, we could have 50" displays at 8000x5000 pixels, eye tracking, gesture control, and who knows what else. Basically what this guy says: http://tiamat.tsotech.com/displays-are-the-key

Is anyone using a 4K screen?

Although not 55", a post above refers to: http://tiamat.tsotech.com/seiki-4k
It seems like if you do not do gaming, you should be fine.
