I think Google prefers to support existing open source projects that are successful. Internally, a lot of Java engineers at Google use Eclipse, which is a great IDE for Java development. No need to re-invent the wheel, instead it makes more sense for them to contribute to the success of Eclipse. FYI, Google also just donated $20K to the Eclipse foundation: http://www.thepowerbase.com/2012/09/google-donates-20000-to-eclipse-fo…

If anyone needs it (since Microsoft didn't supply it) I made an installer for Visual Studio Code Linux. The installer grabs the archive, puts things where they go, and makes sure you have the nice shiny icon that it ships with. http://www.thepowerbase.com/2015/04/install-visual-studio-code-ubuntu-…

Not to get all anti-Chinese here, because I'm not, but Xiaomi is a big-time GPL and intellectual property/license violator. Not like that's unusual with Chinese companies, but Xiaomi in particular has been publicly called out a number of times on the issue. http://www.thepowerbase.com/2012/11/android-community-demands-miui-rom… If you thought some of Samsung's early Android phones were too close to copying the iPhone, you've seen nothing. Xiaomi phones blatantly rip off design of other manufactures, especially Apple. They are not even coy about it. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/06/05/business/global/in-china-an-empire-b… As far as the OSS comunity goes, this is probably a career limiting move by Barra right here.

See http://www.thepowerbase.com/2013/04/github-graciously-helps-female-pro… Women aren't frail damsels that need your condescending efforts, or need your overly protective assumptions that are mainly patriarchy disguised as a cape to help them cross a puddle that you can manage. The key to more women in tech is outreach and education, not patronization and tales that they are frail, and need protection and special treatment. You can have the last word, but next time, try reading the link I share with you.

We tried to use Cloudflare when they teamed with Dreamhost a few months ago. We had more downtime than uptime.... Though this is super-relevant because during the struggle with Cloudflare, we released an article about LOIC and how easy it is to reveal the locations and identities of individuals involved in a DDoS attack using LOIC. http://www.thepowerbase.com/2012/03/low-orbit-ion-cannon-exposed/

This isn't the sort of thing author is talking about. We're talking about the nasty, mean-spirited, no-holds-barred evisceration of each other by hiding behind the guise of criticism. Take a few days ago: "GitHub Gracious Helps Female Programmers Cower in Fear"[1] Nobody is saying you have to agree with everything GitHub does re: sexism, or that they are above criticism. Nobody is saying you should be patting everyone on the back and giving gold stars for effort. But what is that, really? You couldn't just say "this is wrong and doesn't help" or "your solution makes the problem worse"? No, author in this case had to go with the most needlessly inflammatory, mean-spirited, and downright asshole-ish comment possible. Presentation matters. Criticism wrapped in vitriol becomes just vitriol, and vitriol wrapped in criticism still doesn't become good criticism. Disagree away, but the way the geek community behaves it's clear many members take a perverse glee in eviscerating each other via "criticism". We revel in others being wrong, and we positively wet ourselves at the opportunity to point out this wrongness with gusto and vitriol. This perversity is what the author was railing against, not your ability to disagree in general. [1] http://www.thepowerbase.com/2013/04/github-graciously-helps-female-pro…
