> I've always thought that makers of image capture equipment were striving to create technology to capture the world, as it is, without any bias towards any particular subject. You'd be surprised, especially with pre-digital photo. Each film emulsion has its own characteristics. I won't go to much into details because it's explained all over the internet already, but here is a quick comparison of a few emulsions: https://www.thephoblographer.com/2017/11/27/quick-comparison-todays-fa…

I only use B&H site for checking general prices or reviews, as they won't stop discriminating people. A discrimination lawsuit almost every year since 2009. https://www.thephoblographer.com/2024/07/09/bh-photo-lawsuit-discrimin…

The photographic technique matters for image quality. You may have been looking at autochrome prints which used potato starch grains and typically had a long exposure time and a bit of a pointillist effect. For reference here is a collection of 110 year old autochromes of Paris: https://www.thephoblographer.com/2013/01/31/behold-the-magnificence-of… In contrast the 120 year old three channel photos of Sergei Prokudin-Gorsky from Tsarist Russia look like they were taken yesterday. https://www.loc.gov/collections/prokudin-gorskii/about-this-collection…
