Some pretty engrossing material on narcissism: https://thelastpsychiatrist.com The blog is long defunct, but the archives are definitely worth a read.

https://www.gwern.net Gwern is an independent researcher who studies... a lot of things. He's documented some of the history of the dark web, blogs about his nootropics experience and, perhaps most notably, predicted that bitcoin might reach $10,000... in 2011. https://thelastpsychiatrist.com The blogs that aspire to follow in TLP's footsteps are legion.

The Last Psychiatrist, http://thelastpsychiatrist.com . Excellent insights into the ways we lie to ourselves, how we react to the media, and how society operates. I also love ribbonfarm, previously mentioned in the thread.

Thank you! The "Entitlement Generation" may be in trouble, but the world they live in wasn't set up by them, it was set up by their parents. The Last Psychiatrist[1] characterizes the previous generation as "The Dumbest Generation Of Narcissists In The History Of the World"[2] who aren't even aware of their own ignorance. I completely don't see the problem he's writing about, my favourite blogs don't post daily, some authors post 1-3 times a month[1]. Others are bringing co-bloggers on board, and even then only come up with a few posts a week[2]. That's why RSS must live on. It takes over 200 subscriptions to get a decent daily dose of reading out of blogs like that. [1] http://thelastpsychiatrist.com/ [2] http://www.overcomingbias.com/

Not a book exactly but I've been reading this blog --> http://thelastpsychiatrist.com/ He/She has an interesting take on psychiatry, might be worth checking out sometimes.

I had a long-standing interest in psychology, but haven't found a single book worth crap. Psychologists seem to obsess over fancy terminology and say-so stories with absolutely no conception of anything remotely like a controlled experiment. The one exception I've found is this blog: http://thelastpsychiatrist.com/ Although most of his posts just complain about the lack of quality in medical and psychiatric publishing. That, and his definition of narcism (creating a persona and acting it out) is without doubt the most insightful model of the psyche I'd ever stumbled on.

Nietzsche and The Last Psychiatrist[1] would have a field day with this. The article tells a story we love to believe: we may be poorer than the people the article talks about, but we are nicer, more empathic, better people. We love to believe it, because it makes us feel good about ourselves and provides a sense of justice: nobody has it all and if someone has more of one thing, he will have less of something else. We also love to believe it because that way we don't have to consider a far more disturbing possibility: that these people aren't accidentally rich and their moral shortcomings aren't a result of their riches. That they are rich exactly because they are capable of the repugnant behavior described in the article. That our capitalist system is fallacious, can be gamed and is being gamed by these people. The system we are so infatuated with allows people that are undeserving, cheaters, to get the prize. [1] http://thelastpsychiatrist.com/

It is always great to follow the instructions from a psychiatrist [1]. [1] https://thelastpsychiatrist.com/2007/08/how_to_take_ritalin_correctly.…

My experience with caffeine withdrawal is horrible each time it's happened (and I didn't take great care to taper slowly). This is one of my favorite articles about it "Worse Than The Flu": https://thelastpsychiatrist.com/2007/04/worse_than_the_flu.html

The last psychatrist remarked [1] (I miss you), sadly, that women move there where men no longer are interested. With the fall of worth of [2] university education, the percentage of women increases. [1] "when more women enter a field, it means less men did, and if the men stopped going there, where did they go? Why did they leave? I assume they aren't home with the kids, right?[...] if power seeking men aren't running for Senate, where did they go?" - https://thelastpsychiatrist.com/2013/01/no_self-respecting_woman_would… [2] "Ernst & Young will no longer require new hires to have a degree" https://medium.com/signals-of-change/ernst-young-will-no-longer-requir…

I never read "Lean In," but one of my favorite blog posts of all time[1] did a truly epic takedown of it, exposing it as a thinly-veiled manifesto for white-collar women to become miserable underpaid status-chasing workaholics. > What's one to do then? GP gives a hint: > You haven't changed your behaviour at all. TLP[1] said it best: > There you go again, thinking about yourself. Your impulse wasn't to say, "am I doing this to my kids?" or "how will I act differently?" It was to wonder about your own nature. 1: https://thelastpsychiatrist.com/2012/10/the_story_of_narcissus.html

All that building your brand and trying to convince people of your identity in place of actually having one is not exhibitionism but narcissism. There used to be a very good blog about this being the root of cultural and social rot we see around us. https://thelastpsychiatrist.com/

This reminded me of a classic essay on how a lot of "luxury" branding is meant to appeal, not to the true elite (the kind of people who are born with seven or more figures in a trust fund and / or live off capital gains), but to the aspirations of professional-class strivers (lawyers, doctors, advertising directors, software engineers, etc.): https://thelastpsychiatrist.com/2011/11/luxury_branding_the_future_lea…

Clonazepam in 'standard' doses has a very different effect to clonazepam in microdose, ie 1/50th of the clinical dose. You can see this discussed by Dr Catterral here https://epiphanyasd.blogspot.co.uk/2015/08/low-dose-clonazepam-for-aut… based on the research he did supported by the excellent Simon's foundation (hedge fund manager behind Renaissance) Above a 50mcg dose, the inhibitory effects disappear. A nice explanation of why this happens can be found here: http://thelastpsychiatrist.com/2009/01/treating_insomnia_with_less.htm… really interesting readable read

Diagnose? No, probably not. Finding another label for a group of people in the Valley you are already predispositioned to hate isn't insight. And limiting it to a geographic region with such flimsy cultural boundaries smacks of projection. Want a bold stand? The (now defunct) blog The Last Psychiatrist spent years arguing that narcissism was society wide and generations deep. see 75% of the posts, but maybe these in particular (?) http://thelastpsychiatrist.com/2010/11/a_generational_pathology.html http://thelastpsychiatrist.com/2008/10/the_dumbest_generation_is_only.…

TheLastPsychiatrist explains expertly why the whole form of this argument is wrong in a post questioning Randi Zuckerberg. It's well worth reading, especially if you are considering the benefits of opting out of Facebook (and I strongly recommend you jump in, the water's find :) http://thelastpsychiatrist.com/2014/01/randi_zuckerberg.html

Sorry, but I am getting really tired of this form of discourse. A million interests prevent you from doing a million things every day, but apparently it's only objectionable and worth remarking about when it's the government. And it's not even like I disagree with him -- yes we should allow assisted suicide. But boy oh boy is it hard not to notice that he wastes no time thinking about why things are this way, or which interests specifically may be preventing things from changing. Nope, it's just THE GOVERNMENT. Short circuit, do not pass go, no further critical thinking necessary.
