That was not at all the universal response to the iphone. http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=iphone is a (nsfw) contemporary article that I agreed with at the time, and I knew a decent number of people who got an early iphone and then switched back to a blackberry.

Hold on a sec. Nokia and Ericsson made lots and lots of phone modeles. If you're comparing with cheap ordinary models everyone had, then sure, first iphone was great, but that's not a fair comparison. This is:

I know it's not entirely in keeping with the spirit of this site, but there's a part of me that really wants to snark,
"Oh no! We might no longer have meaningful competition for random-ass, dumbed-down, emotionally manipulative pictures to add to news articles! So next time you read an ad-bloated article about prices going up, they might not be able to afford to include a picture of an average Jane pushing a shopping cart! Truly, a loss to us all!"
Edit: Maddox's classic take on annoyance with stock images:

This reminds me of an article from Maddox in 2007 about how the Nokia E70 is better than the iPhone because he can use the terminal on it. [0] Time may have proven him right.

My favourite example of all time of journalistic shamelessness is ABC reporting that Robin Williams's were "respectfully asking for privacy" following his death, while a banner at the top of the same page advertised live aerial footage of Robin Williams's home:

> Have you see the crap (including Nokia and Sony) that passed for smartphones before the iPhone and Android devices came along?
I have to disagree with you here. The first iPhone was awful and the smartphones and PDAs of the time were in my opinion way ahead of the iPhone. I will concede that the established players failed their market, as people in general (as opposed to techies) wanted a sleek device with nice UI over the features that people took for granted until the iPhone.
I know it's not to be taken seriously, but this neatly expresses my opinion at the time the iPhone came out:

Every time I read one of these stories on social media where a bunch of people are looking for someone, I think of this:
http://thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=dancing_man
What if Mr. Douglas doesn't want to be found? Collectively, we get all up in arms about the iPhone backdoor debacle because of its obvious violations of one's personal private space, but we'll simultaneously engage in internet mob tactics to find this guy.
> I contacted the Human Resources at Pagar.me, the company i have worked with him, i'll try to get his house phonenumber.
Wow.

"For storage a $65 lead acid automobile battery does the trick. It’s 12V so can be charged directly from the solar panel, and holds 420Wh, way more than I use in a day. That’s $0.15 / Wh so I don’t see why everyone is so excited about Tesla charging $0.43 / Wh for the Powerwall, sans inverter and installation."
I would like to refer you to this wonderful article. http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=iphone

I don't see much wrong with that logic; frankly, it sounds to me like much better solution than what's happening now. And if they really, really need to kill some people, then Operation Penny-Drop still sounds much better than what they do now.

Oh man, not another "11 sexy girls with star wars tattoos"...
Normally I would follow "if you don't have anything nice to say" but since you literally asked for it:
Your site tries to build a better mousetrap in one of the worst corners of the internet (better means 'worse' in this case). "List sharing" is a known cheap trick for internet marketers who are the bottom of the barrel, exploitative of both original content creators and those prone to being sucked in to mindless content (aka internet junk food).
Maddox has a memorable rant that sums it up better than I can: http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=ranker_sucks
Your site is not unlike the "reply girls" cancer that devalued youtube, or the fake thumbnails showing cleavage on related videos for everything.
Why would you want to "revolutionize the world of lists"? This doesn't even make sense.
kitsune_ · 2014-01-13
What actually happened is that a superficial image of the nerd/geek culture has been appropriated by "our" former bullies.
The popularity of "I fucking love science" or "BBT" doesn't mean shit in this context. There was a short polemic essay [1] by Maddox about this phenomena.
The same topic is discussed in the video "You're Not such a Nerd: Commodification of Nerd and Gamer Sub-culture" [2]

I'm starting to agree with Maddox that "Internet really needs to stop sucking Neil deGrasse Tyson's dick." [1]
The man is not without accomplishments, but it's getting to the point of complete over-saturation. Just enough already.
