This model ("mnemonic") feels like a good tool to reason about your testing strategy. I ran across the "testing trophy" in the past, which really changed my thinking already, having been indoctrinated with the testing pyramid for such a long time before that. I wanted to share my favorite links about the testing trophy, for those interested:

For those curious about the Pivotal Labs product innovation process, check out this guide. In my opinion, it's the best end-to-end guide on how it all works together.
It's a product of 20+ years of iteration & weekly retrospectives - and was used to coach clients on how to collaborate as a team and build high quality products. Definitely download it, and review from time to time - many gold nuggets.

I could have called this years ago when I found out they exclusively use and enforce pair programming in-house

VMware Tanzu | Software Engineer Roles | Remote, Palo Alto, Austin, (Anywhere)
VMware Tanzu is tightly coupling Kubernetes and modern app development workflows in to the already widely used vSphere virtualization platform. There are multiple engineering roles, everything from k8s internals, to networking, storage, virtualization, and everything in between. Looking for good all around problem solvers, plus if you are already familiar with k8s and golang, but not a prerequisite.

I agree that the 12 column grid system isn't great.
Our company uses the 8 point grid system, and it makes everything neater and visually consistent, and it looks great across all zoom levels.

Spot on. We use ytt[0], "a slightly modified version of the Starlark programming language which is a dialect of Python". Burying logic somewhere in a yaml template is one thing I dislike with passion.

> I simply can not imagine even a whole fortune 500 company supporting their own business logic written on top of Spring, which includes log4j and a whole host of other open source dependencies.
> And what's the commercial alternative? I'm personally not aware of one.
There's commercial support for Spring:

Pivotal doesn't exist anymore.
It has been acquired by Vmware and now it calls Tanzu Labs: https://tanzu.vmware.com/labs
Btw there are many other companies where you can pair: Thoughtworks and Codurance for example

- Go to https://tanzu.vmware.com/developer/workshops/ and create a free account (the workshops are run inside of your own kubernetes)
- Do the container 101 hands-on workshop (bottom of the page)
- Do the Kubernetes 101 hands-on workshop
- ???
- Profit! build and deploy applications on ANY kubernetes (not just GCP)
And then look into the GCP specifics for k8s (GKE), networking, DNS, load balancing, storage, monitoring, etc...

“ Another option (in theory) could be someone selling a service of maintained, updated, scanned images/helm charts”
This is what we aim for with Tanzu Application Catalog https://tanzu.vmware.com/application-catalog
We still have a lot of work to do but you can do things like providing your own base image that you customize and maintain to your specs and we build and test the apps on top of it

Here is my non complete list:
- Who’s at the Helm? [0]
- Microservices, hard as 1, 2, 3 - You can move it but complexity is still here [1]
- Microservices — architecture nihilism in minimalism's clothes [2]
- Do I Really Need Kubernetes? [3]
- Your team might not need Kubernetes [4]
I doubt that any of those articles could convince higher management. I don't know what a "respected source" actually means. I general I believe that advice from consulting agency and cloud providers should be taken with a grain of salt.
If you drew the same conclusion from the "Who’s at the Helm?" article than I, there is only one way out which is a curated container catalog. VMware's Tanzu Application Catalog [5] is the only product in that space I'm aware of. I have quoted the price tag on HN, I think it was removed since that, so I won't repeat it here again. In any way it was magnitudes higher than the EKS base price which already seen as a showstopper by many small shops. Bottom line is: it is really hard and really expensive to operate containers in a secure manner. Probably too hard and too expensive that it would be a good idea to start with it before you actually need it.
