Wagtail (our open-source Django CMS [1]) can generate a static HTML export of your site to the filesystem, Amazon S3 or Google App Engine, piggy-backing on the excellent django-medusa library [2]. This feature was commissioned by a security company who didn't want to risk an embarrassing exposure to new vulnerabilities in Drupal, Rails, Django etc.
Search is an issue for static HTML sites. Swiftype [3] and Algolia [4] look like solid options - has anyone used these in production?

Algolia isn't in this space, but there are definitely companies that are solving this. Swiftype comes to mind.

We've been using https://swiftype.com/site-search for a couple of years. It's great.

I've used Algolia [1] and Swiftype [2] in the past for search on static websites, but recently experimented with lunr.js [3] for our company playbook (built with GitHub pages): http://playbook.wiredcraft.com/
I still want to separate the index in its own JSON file, but so far, so good. Search is fast and index is rebuilt automatically.

(I work for Swiftype.)
Search analytics are a really powerful way to find out what your customers want.
Another one of our customers, SupportBee, wrote a guest post for our blog about how they use Swiftype's analytics to influence their product development: https://swiftype.com/blog/swiftype-search-analytics-for-supportbee.htm…
Our customers love the reports we provide - but we are just getting started.

Swiftype/Elastic | Software Engineer & Technical Writer | REMOTE
Swiftype (now part of Elastic) builds a search platform that powers hundreds of millions of queries a month. We are a small team of generalist software developers and we are looking to grow our team in order to build new products and maintain our existing search platform.
At Elastic, we have a simple goal: to solve the world's data problems with products that delight and inspire. As the company behind the popular open source projects — Elasticsearch, Kibana, Logstash, and Beats — we help people around the world do great things with their data. From stock quotes to real time Twitter streams, Apache logs to WordPress blogs, our products are extending what's possible with data, delivering on the promise that good things come from connecting the dots. The Elastic family unites employees across 30+ countries into one coherent team, while the broader community spans across over 100 countries.

Interesting post. I work at Swiftype, where we build full-text search engines, and it's been interesting seeing the varying definitions of "good enough." It seems like Postgres full-text search is surprisingly decent for a less robust solution than something designed entirely for search, and I can see it being "good enough" if you are in the very early stages of development and don't want to add anything that requires additional knowledge to your project quite yet.
>> You want to give quickly a search feature (maybe not perfect) in the hand of your user
If this is your goal, rather than simply keeping your project contained to postgres as much as possible, Swiftype would be a better solution. Building a whole full-text search engine in a day with Postgres is faster than you could reasonably do with ES or Solr, but if your goal is simply the functionality, you can get a search engine into your app in less than an hour with Swiftype. We're built on Elasticsearch and Lucene, so you can get all their power from a team that works on it full time.

I really liked the Github documentation (https://help.github.com/), as well as Swiftype (https://swiftype.com/documentation/) and BitBucket (https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/BITBUCKET/Bitbucket+Documenta…
Mostly because all provide a very clean design, especially on the content pages themselves.

I think the page on their site is probably more relevant:

The visualizations look really clean!

in http://swiftype.com/engines/bca/document_types/new I click on Delete This Engine, click OK on "Are you sure? This action is permanent." and the engine is still there.
Am I missing something?

I tested the Parse.com documentation (https://www.parse.com/docs/search#stq=xcode) and found some problems with swiftype.
When searching via Chrome, I kept getting a blank content area with no search results. I did some digging (thinking that the issue might be that I reject 3rd party cookies) and I found the problem:
https://swiftype.com/embed.js wasn't loading. I went to view this script in my browser and got an error which was preventing the script from executing: "The identity of this website has not been verified. Server's certificate is not trusted." I clicked "proceed" to view the script in the browser, and when I went back to the search page, it worked as intended.
