I would like to also recommend the app: hear (macOS speech recognition and dictation via the command line) See: https://sveinbjorn.org/hear (Uses built-in macOS capabilities for transcription from audio to text.)

This is neat to see on Linux, it reminds me of Platypus on OS X [1], which in turn drew spiritual inspiration (that is, I don't know if the author of Platypus knew about these) from CLImax [2] and even earlier, Macintosh Programmer's Workshop [3] [4]. I don't know where MPW got the idea from, that just happens to be where I first encountered it. Thanks to user classichasclass in this thread for reminding me that the feature was called Commando in MPW. I'm curious if it originated with MPW. If you want to build a simple UI on top of a script for Mac, I recommend Platypus: https://sveinbjorn.org/platypus The app has been around for years, is open source, and works really well.

Its open source GitHub repo at https://github.com/sveinbjornt/hear Man page at https://sveinbjorn.org/files/manpages/hear.1.html > (Uses built-in macOS capabilities for transcription from audio to text.) Question (to self, currently researching)... Which capabilities? Released when? I ask because Apple Intelligence has expanded the use of audio transcription features. Answer: `hear` uses SFSpeechRecognizer [1] which has been available since macOS 10.15. I'm not yet sure how it relates to Apple Intelligence transcription services. Note: "speech recognition is a network-based service" which perhaps suggests Apple Intelligence (the marketing term, not an Apple Developer term, I don't think) uses it as well [1][ https://developer.apple.com/documentation/speech/sfspeechrecognizer

I use a tool called Sloth[0] for showing all the open files and connections of running processes. It does pretty much the same thing. Unfortunately I didn't have the presence of mind to take a memory dump of TextEdit before I quit it while it was doing this. I'm gonna take your advice and not freak out, and try to prove that the behavior is benign. I think I'll just set up a shell script on TextEdit to alert if it ever opens anything inside /users, and watch it for awhile. I'm still pretty unhappy that it seemed to home in on scanning my tax returns, out of a folder with thousands of other things. The read pattern looked human-guided, like what you'd do if you were browsing around someone else's filesystem. [0] https://sveinbjorn.org/sloth

a very nice, open source, app that provides similar functionality but also shows open files is Sloth (https://sveinbjorn.org/sloth).

Sloth might help - https://sveinbjorn.org/sloth (It's been ages since I used Process Explorer so I'm just going off memory.)

For native Mac apps, there is Platypus that does something similar: https://sveinbjorn.org/platypus

Really nice. Reminds me of Platypus[1]. I don't really use GitHub but, if possible, please change the GIFs to MP4. Besides being sharper and way smaller, one can control the playback to rewind/fast forward. [1] https://sveinbjorn.org/platypus

Super cool. Reminds me of "platypus" - a similar tool I use frequently: https://sveinbjorn.org/platypus

Looks very similar to: http://sveinbjorn.org/platypus/ (http://sveinbjorn.org/files/manpages/PlatypusDocumentation.html#235) BitBar focuses on just the Menu Bar use case though, and does a more polished job than Platypus.

I think Platypus will work for this on modern Macs. http://sveinbjorn.org/platypus

Similar GUI functionality in OS X can be achieved with cocoaDialog: http://mstratman.github.com/cocoadialog/ Comes in very handy, along with Platypus for wrapping shell scripts: http://sveinbjorn.org/platypus

Hm, is there a similar command for this on the mac (that is installed by default)? I looked around and this is all I could find: http://www.sveinbjorn.org/watch_macosx I have a bunch of while loops written in bash, but would prefer something cleaner.
