There's some truth to that w/ respect to the "cloud" storage services out there. Basically it costs $X dollars/month to host your data in a datacenter (with bandwidth and cooling costs). So what we have now are several providers that basically offer the same service (a special folder and/or syncing) for roughly the same price. Look out in the next few months for companies that will disrupt classical client/server datacenter based storage with peer-to-peer protocols and in home devices (which don't have the same cost constraints that datacenters have). These product offering will in some ways be similar to dropbox, icloud, etc, but they will be an order of magnitude cheaper and an order of magnitude faster. I work at one of these companies. http://spacemonkey.com/ If you're interested in P2P storage and distributed systems check us out, we're hiring.

> from the ground up with privacy and security built in Couldn't agree more! > I'm finding that other folks are thinking along similar lines > (but taking different approaches) Not sure if this is the right place for it but does anyone have a list of all these similar projects? I know of: * ArkOS [https://arkos.io] * FreedomBox [https://www.freedomboxfoundation.org/] Seems to me that something like this can be built faster if resources were combined in some way. I guess the tough thing here is that people seem to have different visions as to what the end product would look like. Perhaps effort would be best expended by collaborating on a solid, secure "base" image which could then be forked as needed. --- My ideal system would: * Be open source. * Be built with a security mindset from the ground up. * Have some sort of full system/drive encryption. * Run on something like a Raspberry Pi with local storage attached. * Have one identity per-person for social use (public/private blog, private chat, private audio/video calling, private email, private sharing of photos, videos, private VRM [1]) * Have the ability to spawn off anonymous identities that would not be traceable back to your IP/device for anonymous publishing/chat/email where required. * Be easy enough that I can give one to my parents, create accounts for them, show them once how to use it and then forget about it. * Have all of this backed up through some distributed, encrypted system like…

I believe this is the rough idea behind https://www.spacemonkey.com/

I've been pretty happy with Space Monkey (http://spacemonkey.com) -- 1TB of local and remote backup, $199 for the device and free first year, remote backup $49 after the first year if you want to keep doing it. And I have access to the full 1TB as if the files were local, even on my measly 120G macbook air, since the filesystem is backed by the network. It's kinda cool.

Space Monkey - http://www.spacemonkey.com/ Takes the distributed backup idea to the n-th degree.

I'm hoping that Space Monkey (http://www.spacemonkey.com/) helps solve some of this. It backups up to a local appliance-style box, then syncs with other space monkey boxes in a peer to peer manner. Like cloud storage, but cheaper at $10/month for 1TB.

You might like http://spacemonkey.com (when it becomes available). Client-side encryption, 60x faster upload, 10x more space.

This is an interesting take on that: http://spacemonkey.com/

an example from https://www.spacemonkey.com/blog/posts/go-space-monkey - we decided to transliterate our 90k lines of Python directly to Go, line by line The 90K number includes our tests, but without tests, the Python codebase is 36,784 lines of code. Those same lines of code became 41,717 lines of Go code. So, not that much of an increase. When you consider that's just 4,933 more lines, it's not crazy to assume most of those are closing braces. I'd say closing braces and trivial expansions of list comprehensions into 3-5 line loops.

The page https://www.spacemonkey.com/tour mentions under Linux "Alpha access by request".

Here's one particular example of a real company moving a production application from Python to Go: https://www.spacemonkey.com/blog/posts/go-space-monkey
