Agree, building this in 2021 is not a good use of data engineering time. As well as the SaaS packages like Amplitude and Mixpanel, you also have great open-source tools and platforms for mobile and product analytics like PostHog (https://posthog.com/), Countly (https://count.ly/) and Snowplow (https://snowplowanalytics.com/). Disclosure: Snowplow co-founder.

At the past 3 places I've worked, we've setup Snowplow Analytics (https://snowplowanalytics.com/) and would strongly recommend it over GA, Segment, and other third-party systems. If you're looking for a first-party system, Snowplow is an amazing setup.

Snowplow Analytics[1] is a really great tool for web analytics, especially for companies that want to own their data or have privacy concerns. It's pretty straightforward to replicate a lot of the reporting that you can do with Google Analytics, while giving you full access to the clickstream data that hampers more custom analysis within GA (at least in the free version, the premium GA360 product allows raw access to the clickstream data Google Analytics collects[2]). Or use the original self-hosted-at-scale open source solution, Snowplow (https://snowplowanalytics.com/). These guys have been solving self-hosted digital analytics for years now, and have consistently proven to be one of the best options for real-time digital data tracking, triggering, and analytics. Their qa/schema focus is especially nice in teams where multiple people are contributing data but you want to make sure that minimum data quality requirements are conformed to.

I worked on a real-time analytics product based on Snowplow, and I came to the conclusion that bounce rate is fairly meaningless metric (at least, in and of itself). When you are able to track actual engagement based on active time on page, the bounce rate becomes almost worthless as an indicator of success. We measured "active time on page" based on how engaged the user was on the page: were they scrolling, clicking, moving the mouse on a focused page, etc. It wasn't perfect, but it was much more helpful to publishers than Google Analytics' page-level metrics. Web Analytics I feel is years behind data science - but tools like http://snowplowanalytics.com/ are becoming much more widespread and are taking market share away from Google and Adobe which is good for everyone. Free GA is still the best tool for small sites.

http://snowplowanalytics.com/ is worth considering if you have larger volumes of traffic

Snowplow Analytics | Technical Support Engineer | https://snowplowanalytics.com | Full-time | Remote (US) Our mission is to empower data teams to build a strategic data capability that delivers high-quality, complete, and relevant data across the business. Snowplow provides open-source (and a commercial version) software that allows data teams to track events happening on their apps, websites, smart TVs, etc., validate the data to ensure it is high quality and appropriately enriched with the data the business needs, and then stored in a data warehouse where it can be queried by the business as-is or used in business intelligence tools such as Looker. All in real-time. The role: You'll provide timely, empathetic, and highly technical support to our customers. You will advise them on the best way to configure trackers and cookies, help them with data validation issues, and ensure the data keeps flowing through the pipeline to serve their business needs. You might be responding to OpsGenie alerts one day, and then writing SQL to query a customer's database the next - plenty of variety in the job! There's also excellent room for growth in all directions here: existing Support Engineers build their own tools and improve on existing ones, maintain documentation, provide expert advice to the rest of the company on the product, and work on personal growth to develop new skills. Apply: https://jobs.lever.co/snowplowanalytics/25f93f3d-02cb-48be-a25c-143291… Any questions?…

Snowplow Analytics (http://snowplowanalytics.com) | Support Engineer | REMOTE UTC+8 to UTC+10 Having grown our team to two support engineers with a broad timezone reach (Alberta, Canada to Berlin, Germany), we are now looking to move to a full “follow the sun” model, and hire our third support engineer in the UTC+8 to UTC+10 timezone range. https://matomo.org That's the only full featured open source competitor I am aware of, so it should be mentioned. https://snowplowanalytics.com/ Somewhat FOSS. There was a story there, but I don't remember the details. If you don't need much, plausible.io is decent but very low on details. Cloudflare seems to offer the same amount of data as Plausible, unblockable, and with no JS to load [especially if you pay $20 for the better analytics], but I don't know what data they lose by browsers that cache dns queries etc.
huy · 2020-10-10
I know of three (all OSS) * https://www.posthog.com/ (more mixpanel alternative, can auto-track events too) * https://snowplowanalytics.com/ * https://rudderstack.com/ (explicitly say it's Segment alternative)

Snowplow is also an option. It’s an open-source data collection solution that, unlike GA, gives you full ownership of your event-level data and the freedom to define your own data structures. Not exactly what you’d call ‘lightweight’ but quite a few Snowplow users/customers have come from GA for the level of flexibility and control they can have over their data sets. (Full disclosure: I work for Snowplow Analytics) - https://github.com/snowplow/snowplow - https://snowplowanalytics.com/
tmikaeld · 2020-04-08
Some open source alternatives: - https://ackee.electerious.com/ (Node.js based) - https://github.com/zgoat/goatcounter (Golang) (Commercial Licensed) - https://snowplowanalytics.com (Core-ware) - https://count.ly (Core-ware) https://www.visitor-analytics.io is also a great GDPR compliant alternative (Not open source).

If you're serious about self-hosting analytics there is only one serious place to go: http://snowplowanalytics.com/ I don't use them, but they are building enterprise-grade self-hosting. Disclaimer: I am working on a project in the marketing analytics space. I don't use them and this isn't an endorsement, just a pointer to research more!
uberneo · 2016-01-13
http://snowplowanalytics.com/ -- this is an another Open Source project which you can use in house and a loads and loads of predefined metrics and documentation.. but I agree the approach here is simple and rock solid, plus you have complete control of it. Just wondering if JSOB datatype is used to store the unstructured data into Postgres?
BraveNewCurency · 2015-05-17
There is also Snowplow. http://snowplowanalytics.com/ It's more of a toolbox, so it fails on the simple-to-use part. But it does lots of high-end/sophisticated things that other tools can't.
liquidcool · 2013-07-22
My clients are already using Google Webmaster Tools and Adwords and want everything integrated, plus they want the reliability of Google. But another FOSS analytics platform is Snowplow (http://snowplowanalytics.com), and while it wouldn't replace GA for them, it might replace another commercial analytics package. Few high volume ecommerce sites use just GA these days.

Hi WorkLifeBalance, I'm one of the founders of Gradient, the company behind Gurn. I wanted to address this one personally. First and foremost, Kintra was a completely separate product to Gurn and the products are unrelated in any way. I appreciate how the description of Kintra can be interpreted but let me try and describe it's purpose and see if I can alleviate your concerns. It was built to address a problem for marketers who were unable to attribute marketing spend and return on investment effectively, in addition to facing the advancing GDPR legislation and the right to be forgotten. At the time, many marketers were using custom events in Google Analytics to track the source of a lead. Due to the walled garden nature of the likes of Twitter Ads / Facebook Ads / Google Ads it can be incredibly difficult to work out which channel is driving a sale when a) every channel is claiming the sale and b) you have no concept of an individual In addition, without knowing the individual (using an anonymous identifier in a cookie) how you would be able to remove all the data for that individual should a request be served under GDPR? In Google Analytics, due to the way it aggregated its data in order to forget someone, there was the real risk you would need to delete the entire aggregated block of data with many potentially large numbers of user analytics rolled up together. Kintra was built to try and fit this need and is more akin to https://snowplowanalytics.com/ or…

Snowplow, also open source, has a comparison of a bunch of other open source analytics products for different functions: https://snowplowanalytics.com/blog/2021/01/05/the-top-14-open-source-a…
mrwnmonm · 2020-04-24
I think yes, all these products -> https://segment.com, https://rudderstack.com, https://snowplowanalytics.com, https://fivetran.com, https://stitchdata.com, https://www.alooma.com, https://singer.io, https://www.holistics.io, can work as a pipeline, but some have more features than others. This is a bit simplifying answer.
