I am not sure about the US market, but Skyscanner [1] works great in Europe, I wonder how this is different. Besides from being structured as an email, it offers quite similar functionality of finding optimal flights (in some sense of optimal). It may just be me, but I am definitely misunderstanding the inbox metaphor. Why is it an inbox? Why is there emphasis on _one email_? I don't book flights through email -- I go on an airline's website to book.
For now it seems to be always responding with "Hi there, I couldn't find any flights for your request. Please try again.", I could not test it out. Unless this is a demo version, and is working as expected.

There's also http://www.skyscanner.net, which does not seem to get much love around here, even though it was doing flight search well before hipmunk even got started.
It's especially good if you want to do an open-ended search, as in you know where you are leaving from and which month you might want to leave, but you're flexible as to where you want to go.

Skyscanner (http://www.skyscanner.net/), who are bigger here in Europe, do the same thing as Kayak, only more-so - they have close to a thousand separate data-sources which they can query for prices, and they fall back on ITA and Amadeus only when necessary, because those queries cost more. Tends to result in better prices for the end-user, because the level of competition between vendors is phenomenal.

exactly. also http://momondo.com and http://skyscanner.net
But on mobile https://market.android.com/details?id=com.hipmunk.android "This app is incompatible with your Play HTC HTC Wildfire.". Well, all other work, I don't see a reason why a form to search results via an api shouldn't work on ANY device.
moeffju · 2011-10-09
http://rome2rio.com/ actually took a lot of hassle out of flying for me. Sure, they don't list "no-frills" airlines like Ryanair, but I don't want to fly those anyway. Check them out if you don't know the site yet, they were on HN some months ago.
Also, http://skyscanner.net/ has not been mentioned yet. From the article, Amadeus seems to do something similar, but I've only used Skyscanner so far and have been quite happy with the results.

That wouldn't really surprise me. Off the top of my head things I've experienced in the past week or two and remembered:
- Four involving a Vim upgrade being pushed by one tool and blocked by another; a broken shortcut causing gVim to load with an error message and no working menus - not fixed by uninstall/reinstall; unable to delete one of the Vim DLLs; Windows Explorer window lockup after right click (possibly it had the DLL loaded for Vim context menu icon?).
- FireFox regularly stops loading pages until I visit Help -> About FireFox and see that it's silently done an upgrade and is waiting to restart.
- Cloud service with SSO login working for months, stopped working with mysterious 'error processing your credentials' type message.
- and it has a broken 'send password reset email' feature, no email gets to me.
- checking for blocked emails in SaaS email filter, when I put my email in the 'Recipient' box of the search, Edge browser autofill puts my email address in the 'Sender' search field as well, incorrectly / uselessly.
- Edge browser autofill dropdowns routinely cover SaaS product's HTML/JS dropdown menus.
- New SaaS product which has a username/password login instead of SSO, but login goes to a prompt with only 'use SSO' (which we don't) or 'forgot my password' (after logging in successfully). Clicking 'use SSO' gets past that screen, I think it's internal between-different sub-sites SSO abstraction leaking to the customer.
- SaaS product offers 2-factor…

There are a number of companies who use scraping as a core data source for their services. Try looking at the job descriptions for companies like that but be aware that job titles and responsibilities can vary massively.
Two UK based examples I found: Skyscanner has a role for a Senior Data Engineer[0] and OpenCorporates has a role for a Data Integration Developer[1].

When I was buying a ticket to Europe for study abroad I was checking these sites, in the end I used the first one, but all were helpful:
* http://www.momondo.com/
* https://www.kayak.com/flights
* https://www.cheapoair.com/
* https://www.google.com/flights/ ($$$)
* https://www.hipmunk.com/ ($$$)
* http://kiwi.com/
* https://www.skyscanner.net/
The ones with the dollars signs were the most expensive. These sites are not all equal some are more reputable than others, etc.

You know what's even lighter than passengers? Their luggage. And yet you get to pay steep premiums for going over the usual 23-32Kg limit. If you're curious what overcharge we're talking about see here [0].
This puts in context what kind of deal a 150Kg person gets compared to a 50Kg person. They pay the same price, one gets to carry 100Kg of extra weight. And again, this is a treatment that is only extended to overweight people. A very tall person or an invalid get squat in terms of "good deals". It's only discrimination when we're talking about extra kilograms.
Weight on an airplane is always a major consideration. But even if it weren't, fairness doesn't always have to come attached to profit.

You might want to write the common elements in C or C++ (or whatever language you like that can be compiled into a static library), then write separate glue code for each platform. This is one tutorial that describes the technique: http://www.skyscanner.net/blogs/developing-mobile-cross-platform-libra…
therealmarv · 2014-09-07
When I wanted to code a foundation of reusable code for different devices I would either do it like Dropbox and use C++ as the most common layer http://oleb.net/blog/2014/05/how-dropbox-uses-cplusplus-cross-platform… or use Javascript (which I can also use for web pages) for the program logic like described here http://www.skyscanner.net/blogs/developing-mobile-cross-platform-libra…
Also interesting http://kivy.org allows you to use Python for iOS, Android, OS X and Windows.
I would not bet on Swift and cross compiling it today... too bleeding edge. But interesting project... hope it matures. Good luck!
jeopard · 2014-02-28
It might, but unfortunately, you can't build a library with it. It only transforms whole apps. Apportable was investigated in the first part here http://www.skyscanner.net/blogs/developing-mobile-cross-platform-libra…
