I don't know about FDD in particular. They certainly have their own agenda. Wikipedia suggests neoconservative thought and proponents of hawkish US foreign policy [1]. So it's not surprising them supporting the publication. FDD may be the landing page but the authors were the actual reason I thought this could be interesting to other people. I've read some of their publications before, skimmed through the report itself and realized that they aggregated a set of issues they have previously discussed in more than one paper. There are actually not many new facts if you read Sinocism [2], Axios China [3] or Sinoskop [4] from time to time. Generally interested, what standards need to be fulfilled that you think a source provides 'trustworthy analysis'? If you think that’s chilling, read the essay “Engineering the Human Soul” (https://sinocism.com/p/engineers-of-the-soul-ideology-in), by a long-time Australian China-watcher. He asserts that Xi Jinping though follows in a direct line from Stalin and Mao.

Not a book but a talk given at an internal government seminar by a China policy advisor to the Australian government and recommended by Bill Bishop, one of the bigger names in China related news. Talk given in 2017. https://sinocism.com/p/engineers-of-the-soul-ideology-in

I am just going to repeat the best link here: https://sinocism.com/p/engineers-of-the-soul-ideology-in Wow.

The core of the communist party follows an unambiguous agenda. John Garnaut described this very well in his speech "Engineers of the Soul" https://sinocism.com/p/engineers-of-the-soul-ideology-in

I have a few - Bill Bishop's Sinocism is probably the first that comes to mind - https://sinocism.com/about More cynical towards China - Sinocism is a word-play. (But I think he is mostly fair in his critique) https://supchina.com/ is a good website on this topic. I discovered them through a podcast call Sinica https://supchina.com/series/sinica/ (the podcast is extremely good) Dan Wang https://danwang.co/ - some of his writing is scattered across different publications - it's best to follow him on Twitter - He is perhaps one of the deepest thinkers on the topic. More sympathetic towards China. If you really want to dive down the rabbit hole - look up his employer. It is a think-tank on China, and has some excellent publications. Economist's coverage of China is also good. Also I would like to recommend a book - Trade Wars are Class Wars - it's a popular book lately, and bring up some excellent concepts. From what I've heard this book is playing a role in framing how Washington is thinking about China now.

>>>It was the "CPC" and the communists who liberated china. You do realize that right? Depends on what you mean by "liberated". The bulk of the fighting against the Imperial Japanese military was done by the KMT Nationalists, under Chiang Kai-Shek. The KMT lost the civil war afterwards due to still being a shitty unpopular government, and then the CPC went on to "liberate" tens of millions of Chinese from their corporeal bodies during the Cultural Revolution. >>>I don't remember china claiming to be the world's beacon of good. The Chinese government is VERY good at information operations.[1] It is usually more subtle than America's ham-fisted chest-thumping. The CCP uses a lot of proxies to sing its praises, like this: [2]. But Xi Jinping is generally assertive in casting China as a model for the world. From [3]: "China will become more assertive on the world stage and believes its governance model is attractive to other countries will likely raise all sorts of alarms in Asian and Western capitals. Xi declared that China "has become a great power in the world" and "it is time for us to take center stage in the world and to make a greater contribution to humankind". It's extremely difficult to get unbiased information on China. However, there are some good sources. If you have the money, Sinocism[0] is a great newsletter that collects the top (mostly political) stories of the day. Some other good (free) Substacks are Chinarrative[1], which publishes translated human interest stories, and Chinese Journal Review[2], which translates abstracts of a selection of academic papers. If you would like a local insight into more young/liberal perspectives, Sixth Tone[3] is fairly interesting. Be aware that this is a state-owned media source, so it has an interest in presenting China as progressive in ways that outside of middle class communities in top tier cities it usually isn't. Just because it's state-owned doesn't mean it's not informative, though! China Media Project[4] is perhaps a useful accompanying source to try understand exactly how the state media is biased. Of the western media, New York Times probably does the best reporting on China (they even have a Chinese language version), but like all western media they struggle to get access. Inside China, Caixin is probably the best newspaper, but unfortunately it is pay-walled. From left wing perspective I can also recommend Made In China Journal[5]. If you're talking about getting Substack publications into your RSS reader, you can add /feed to the end of the relevant URL and then add that into your reader (e.g. https://sinocism.com/feed). For adding non-Substack publications into the Substack app via RSS, go to reader.substack.com (make sure you're logged in) and click on "Add RSS feed" in the left sidebar.

Watched the four speeches by the US State Department on Chine yesterday. - Ambassador O'Brian - FBI Director Wray - AG Barr - Pompeo at the Nixon Library Now that we've (the US and a growing number of allies) have made it clear that we know what they are doing and will no longer stand for it, China seems to be doubling down. https://www.asiatimesfinancial.com/ccp-announces-plan-to-take-control-… https://sinocism.com/p/xi-weighs-in-on-united-front-work

This link was included in the article: https://sinocism.com/p/engineers-of-the-soul-ideology-in While China has certainly strayed pretty far from its state-controlled economy in recent years, it also seems pretty clear that Xi is more ideologically "hardcore" than his predecessors.

As a long-time reader of blogs (eg. slatestarcodex.com, kalzumeus.com, etc) I've sometimes struggled to keep up with all the posts that I'd like to read. I often don't make the time to sit down and plough through some of the longer ones. I noticed that I listened to a lot of podcasts when commuting, so I made this website to convert interesting blog posts into a podcast. The tech component is mostly glue: the trafilatura scraper + AWS Polly TTS. Given I find this site pretty useful, I figured that some HN readers would enjoy it as well. Here are some of my favourite articles from the past ~18 months with the accompanying audio: Doing Business In Japan https://www.kalzumeus.com/2014/11/07/doing-business-in-japan/ https://media.blogreader.com.au/media/e096c7623b305cb129c4dd5ecca8cd75… A Deep Dive into K-pop https://dormin.org/2020/09/06/a-deep-dive-into-k-pop/ https://media.blogreader.com.au/media/741f2612536071e911f9a964f5adb65c… Peer review: Troubled from the start https://www.nature.com/news/peer-review-troubled-from-the-start-1.1976… https://media.blogreader.com.au/media/4712ffd8d05dd1b51df2b7fedfc3fb82… The Real Reason Your City Has No Money https://www.strongtowns.org/journal/2017/1/9/the-real- reason-your-city-has-no-money https://media.blogreader.com.au/media/1f92611929679af2763b348b29deaa15… A Software Engineer’s Guide to…
