I started to follow documentation here (https://docs.inkeep.com/self-hosting/docker-local) to run things with Docker.
-> connect to the locally installed instance of SigNoz
-> It asks for an email -> when I type it, it says: "This account does not exist. To create a new account, contact your admin to get an invite link"
-> But I am the admin :'), also tried to create an account there https://signoz.io/
-> but they refuse personal Github or Gmail accounts for now.
Conclusion
So it's literally impossible to run your app for a 'normal person' running their own server :(
Or maybe I missed a step :/

If your app is instrumented with OpenTelemetry, I'd really recommend something like SigNoz (https://signoz.io/) or Axum (https://axiom.co/) (or even https://baselime.io but their application is a mess to work with)
1. Axiom has a generous free plan (not sure if it's self-hostable) 2. SigNoz has an easy to work with self-hosting setup but also cloud solution.
If it's just logging, you can still forward your logs to these platforms but having OTel really goes a long way (from debugging and vendor selection POV).

Any of the Clickhouse-based Otel stores can do event sourcing - just set up materialised views on the trace tables.
I know the following use CH:

Telescope is primarily focused on log visualization, not on log collection or preparing ClickHouse for storage. The system does not currently provide (and I think will not ever) built-in mechanisms for ingesting logs from any sources.
I will consider providing a how-to guide on setting up log storage in ClickHouse, but I’m afraid I won’t be able to cover all possible scenarios. This is a highly specific topic that depends on the infrastructure and needs of each organization.
If you’re looking for a all-in-one solution that can*both collect and visualize logs, you might want to check out https://www.highlight.io or https://signoz.io or other similar projects.
And also, by the way, I’m not trying to create a "Grafana Loki killer" or a "killer" of any other tool. This is just an open source project - I simply want to build a great log viewer without worrying about how to attract users from Grafana Loki or Elastic or any other tool/product.

What I’ve seen happen is that people pay Datadog and, for some reason or another, they:
1. Cannot really get the whole team on Datadog onboarding (Development too, not just “Infra”), so there are these really deep gaps that will never, ever be covered. 2. Don’t use all the services they pay for: “Oh, these CI/CD observability pipelines thing that costs us half our infrastructure? Yeah, I suppose they run fine.”, “Oh, these Profile Hosts? Yeah, just in case we use them, although it was 11 months the last time we did use them...” 3. Pay in excess for services they don’t take advantage of because of #1. 4. Cannot allocate time to follow through with their Account Manager and apply the spending suggestions they sometimes make. “Hey, you’re spending tons on Profile Hosts, but I don’t see usage. Have you looked into that? Oh, yeah, some day we will...” I would definitely not call them useless, but gosh they are expensive for the minimum of things, which I agree if you cannot commit to the points above, you might as well setup your own Prometheus + Grafana + Loki + Mimir + Tempo stack and see what you can come up with, or even try one of the other alternatives I’ve seen around, like SigNoz[1].

Big fan of signoz - otel, self-hosted, Prometheus based, works with grafana, scales.

Datadog is good, sentry too, but after running a cloud practice for a major world business, I prefer to have my sensitive system logs and traces in house.

Have you looked at https://signoz.io/ ? Its the closest I have tried, but I still wouldn't put it quite at the same level of usability.

There are a whole bunch of attempts to unify metrics, logs and traces into a single DB now.
* InfluxDB (the newest Rust rewrite)
* http://openobserve.ai/
* https://uptrace.dev/
* Clickhouse powered solutions (eg https://signoz.io)
* ... ?
I'm quite skeptical about the "store raw data" approach. It makes querying much more complex and slower, storage much more expensive, etc.
Columnar databases that can store the data very efficiently are the way to go, IMO. They can still benefit from cheap long-term storage like S3.
pat2man · 2025-01-10
A lot of web frameworks etc do most of the instrumentation for you these days. For instance using opentelemetry-js and self hosting something like https://signoz.io should take less than an hour to get spun up and you get a ton of data without writing any custom code.
david1542 · 2024-07-29
You have plenty of options. some of them are open source https://signoz.io/ https://coroot.com/
Did you search tools that are cheaper than DD?
hu3 · 2023-10-01
Is there a comparison of the new InfluxDB against https://clickhouse.com?
I ask because ClickHouse is quite hot at the moment from my experience in consulting and that seems to be reflected in Google Trends [1].
And there are some startups relying on ClickHouse for their log/monitoring products like https://signoz.io and https://hyperdx.io.

Zabbix was cool till 2015, now its better to use https://gitlab.com/mikler/glaber/ or https://signoz.io/.

Companies like https://signoz.io/ are Opentelemetry native and have very transparent approach to predictable pricing. You can self host easily as well.

I've been watching this with a lot of interest: https://signoz.io/

There's also Signoz (https://signoz.io) a YC-backed company but open source with (recently) paid hosted.
chrnola · 2023-02-13
This sounds fairly similar to self-hosting SigNoz[1] except they use the OpenTelemetry Collector[2] in the place where the author has a custom Redis queue consumer.

how is it different from https://signoz.io
signoz datastore is built with cassandra and yours with clickhouse.

I have used SigNoz https://signoz.io/ for that

Can't share the company name, but it's a relatively small startup with a few thousand monthly active users.
Here's what our current stack looks like:
- LLM Access: Custom proxy layer to an OpenAI-compatible gateway for chat completion, transcriptions, image generation, embeddings (we started with LangChain but were fighting with it more than it helped us). Now we use the OpenAI SDK + a custom API gateway that handles cost tracking, metered billing, API with model fallbacks, aliases, and feature flags (e.g., supports_structured_output, supports_reasoning, modality: text, image, audio, etc.).
- Workflow Orchestration: We started with a very simple task executor + background job queue to handle retries and durable executions. Now it has become a real limitation, and we are looking for a complete replacement, considering Temporal, trigger.dev, and Conductor. I don't see an obvious winner here, everything looks like a really sophisticated piece of tech that will have a learning curve and require some rethinking of our decisions and serious refactoring to support new flows.
- Observability: OTEL + https://signoz.io, we don't track LLM outputs for security reasons (consumer product, a lot of private stuff).
- Cost Tracking: We embedded cost tracking into our API proxy layer. For each request, we estimate usage and push it into ClickHouse (via TinyBird) to provide analytics of product usage and to our metering/billing provider (Stripe meters, but evaluating Orb to replace…

Have you tried Signoz (https://signoz.io/) yet?

Hi, I want to love this product. This will be the 3rd or 4th time I have looked at the docs to figure out basic setup.
Each time I look into this. I look to see how it can report CPU/Memory/Disk of the systems at large. When I read, all I find on open telemetry and SigNoz is how to integrate with application stacks.
Am I missing something fundamental in that SygNoz/OpenTelemetry do not integrate with host level metrics? I really, really want to use this product. But this extremely BASIC implementation to use the service is 100% missing for documentation as far as I can tell. Even the example page has nothing listed https://signoz.io/docs/tutorials/ ...
So I am either trying to find out how to make SygNoz do something it was not built to do... or the documentation has a huge hole in it.
Let me know how to proceed, if you have time. It's appreciated so that I dont keep walking down the wrong road and hoping to find something useful.
Thanks!

There are integrations that let you monitor your AWS resources also on SigNoz. That said, I personally think CloudWatch is painful in so many other ways as well,

hey Signoz maintainer here. You can set up alerts to send notifications when there is data missing from your services for configurable periods of time. For example, alert if the data goes missing for the last 5 minutes. Yet to update this in docs, but please find some info here: https://signoz.io/blog/community-update-35/#upgraded-functionalities-f…
deng · 2023-10-30
The LICENSE file does not explain which features are exclusive to the 'Teams' or 'Enterprise' plan of SigNoz. You need to dig through the documentation to find that. For instance, when you check for setting up SAML at https://signoz.io/docs/userguide/sso-authentication/#saml-based-authen… you will find that it is not available in the free version.
I don't have a problem with open-core software, but please, be open about it and show a feature matrix of how the different versions compare.
serverlessmom · 2023-08-21
SigNoz has pretty broad compatibility with whatever docker environment, if you're interested in trying it out you may want to join the community slack and get it working: https://signoz.io/slack

am interested in the `dummyBytes` generated by flog[2], in the linked benchmark result[1]. it's random words from `/usr/share/dict/words`, which may not be highly compressible..
i.e., 500 GB -> 207 GB (with zstd data compression + indexes) seems like a worst case scenario. with "real" logs, I am expecting this to be much better (for logs at least)..
does anyone have a similar size comparison with real life examples? (similar data size, interested in compressed logs size and indexes size with clickhouse)
