> I made reference to exactly this if you read carefully. I actually think this rejection is an inflection point in his behavior. He ought to have been more gracious and received the rejection without hurt to his ego (and reacting as he did). I think since then he’s wrongly viewed that event as ‘No good deed goes unpunished’ and become more and more defiant in his attitude.
Regarding this I think it's also worth a detailed study of that event. Unsworth (the guy doing the insult/who got insulted) wasn't even a diver. https://savingjournalism.substack.com/p/the-real-thai-cave-rescue-pt-1…

Hey dang. I think this post need to be taken down. I've followed this drama before and after reading a lot from both sides, it's pretty clear in my eyes that there is an ongoing harassment campaign from Pasquale. I was really shocked to see this getting so highly voted on HN.
I think this post covers a lot of what is happening - https://savingjournalism.substack.com/p/vcbrags-pasquale-mitchell-and-…

Because we tax income, rather than wealth? This is true for most of the OECD. None of this has changed, and it's true for any ultra-wealthy person who wishes to actually consume against their wealth.
By definition, the ultra-wealthy defer their consumption for the sake of investment. If they never ever choose to liquidate their wealth, then it's little more than a life high score.
One can certainly consume right now by taking on a collateralized loan against their wealth, but even if one were to do that, the loan would need to eventually be repaid. For this to happen, some gain would have to be realized somewhere. That money isn't free. No matter what, that wealth is eventually taxed.
A relevant response to an earlier ProPublica piece: https://savingjournalism.substack.com/p/propublicas-bombshell-bullshit…
As for the Roth IRA, the whole point was to extend the power of deferred consumption to the ordinary person (response to this specific ProPublica piece: https://twitter.com/cundillcapital/status/1408090682401693705)
And just a side note: generally assume that I'm being serious. I try to be as earnest as possible on this forum. Going in with this assumption for anyone on here is best for its general health.

"The octopus is oppressing America, and it is destroying America. In the New York Times the country seems literally on the brink of anarchy and war, all in service, to the power of the New York Times. Look what is happening! When times are good and people are happy and fulfilled and successful the New York Times is an irrelevant bore. When the world is ending as they would have you believe (it is not) they become more powerful than the president. They are the ones that choose the president. You may think that if you vote for Trump or Biden that it will get better. It will not! It will only get worse! The only way to get better is to stop reading the New York Times. And stop writing for any of its tentacles."
This resonates with me especially. In a time of excess we are led too often to believe we are on the brink of collapse. Manufactured crises.

This is what I could find with a quick search regarding what Elon himself claims. I had a skim and it doesn’t seem to necessarily contradict the article I linked or my summary (perhaps depending on your definition of ”good money”). There probably was an emerald mine, and yeah it probably didn’t yield enough for Musk’s father to have the family set for life or anything like that.

Here's a tweet from Elon: "... There’s no evidence whatsoever of an “emerald mine”"
https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1375212880790913025
and more detailed article: https://savingjournalism.substack.com/p/i-talked-to-elon-musk-about-jo…

According to others, that story is severely embellished:

btilly · 2022-04-25
As soon as someone repeats the old canard about the cash from his dad's emerald mines, I know to disregard everything else that they have to say.
First of all there are a lot of questions about whether that story is true. And even if it was, it isn't material to Elon's success: https://savingjournalism.substack.com/p/i-talked-to-elon-musk-about-jo…
Second, what makes Elon truly remarkable is what he accomplished AFTER he made < $200 million from selling PayPal. Most of which were impossible according to conventional wisdom in the industries that he accomplished them in. Anyone who fails to recognize that, has demonstrated a complete lack of comprehension.

Does anyone know who the author, "Jeremy Arnold" is, and what the "Save Journalism Committee" is and who backs them? Their about page doesn't say who they are:
https://savingjournalism.substack.com/p/what-this-newsletter-is-about
Also, why should I or do you trust them over ProPublica? These ranting-style articles are written as if the author possesses the Truth, but analogous to the XKCD about technical standards, all we have is one more point of view.
To me, at this point in Internet history, the ranting, ridiculing style is a strong negative signal. Also, criticism of Silicon Valley billionaires seems to draw responses that try to discredit the news media. (I always wonder: Where then do they get news?)

I don’t have any strong opinions about this ordeal, but the linked ‘receipts’ seemed a bit one-sided to me.
Here’s one of the tweets he mentions without a link: https://twitter.com/boop/status/1332815338820472833?s=21
@boob also calls to light this write up seemingly with more context: https://savingjournalism.substack.com/p/vcbrags-pasquale-mitchell-and-…

What exactly is the "Save Journalism Committee," and what's it's agenda? The link "What is the Save Journalism Commitee" at the bottom of their pages brings you to this nothingburger: https://savingjournalism.substack.com/about, https://archive.is/pY8rd.
The author's Quora profile describes him as a "Messaging Consultant" (https://www.quora.com/profile/Jeremy-Arnold-4, https://archive.is/ch3uz), which sounds like PR to me.

There's quite a bit of irony in the number of HN commenters who are prepared to side with the OP instantly & without any apparent consideration as an innocent victim of... people online instantly & without apparent consideration siding with accusers.
His story didn't quite add up to me - no explanation, even speculative, of why several people in his life, who he thought he was friends with, might suddenly decide to attack him - so I found this interesting: https://savingjournalism.substack.com/p/vcbrags-pasquale-mitchell-and-…
I don't have a lot of sympathy for VCs who have access to actual capital but feel like an anonymous Twitter account making fun of them is "punching down", and it's not obvious that the non-OP people in this story are all behaving well, but we don't have to pick sides here, and it seems like there's plenty of reason to be cautious about fitting this into a narrative about online "mobs" "lynching" innocent victims.
