I genuinely love how Marc Andreessen is a capitalist and isn't apologetic about it. It's honestly refreshing, coming from a tech billionaire in '23 SV. And I agree with every word. There's a follow-up, by the way: https://pmarca.substack.com/p/followup-to-why-ai-wont-cause-unemployme…

and it's pretty obvious that whoever was said that quote was going for shock/cleverness and sacrificed truth and understanding It's not obvious from the quote, which just states something that is obviously true, and doesn't attempt to explain it. But ... Andreessen has elsewhere claimed it's due to regulation: https://pmarca.substack.com/p/why-ai-wont-cause-unemployment But ... more recently his firm has explained they know what Baumol's cost disease is: https://a16z.com/why-ac-is-cheap-but-ac-repair-is-a-luxury/

The problem is whether the then-candlemakers, or today's knowledge workers, will be out of a job, or not. In his other recent newsletter post, Marc Andreessen actually claims that AI will not cause unemployment [0]. [0]: https://pmarca.substack.com/p/why-ai-wont-cause-unemployment

It's because he stopped drinking recently. https://pmarca.substack.com/p/on-pausing-alcohol (In all seriousness, I'm very happy it's becoming more fashionable to not drink)

https://pmarca.substack.com/p/availability-cascades-run-the-world Availability entrepreneurs are “social agents who understand the dynamics of availability cascades and seek to exploit their insights. Located anywhere in the social system, including the government, the media, nonprofit organizations, the business sector, and even households, these entrepreneurs attempt to trigger availability cascades likely to advance their own agendas. They do so by fixing people's attention on specific problems, interpreting phenomena in particular ways, and attempting to raise the salience of certain information.” Marc goes on to say very transparently... "What am I doing with this blog post? Trying to spark an availability cascade about availability cascades." It appears that a16z's strategy was successful.
