Tree Style Tab is available on Firefox Quantum and will be with us for a long, long time. Piro, the author, wrote an excellent article about his experience porting TST to a WebExtension: http://piro.sakura.ne.jp/latest/blosxom/mozilla/extension/treestyletab…

Yes, thankfully there's a nightly build[1]. Until there's a stable/signed release you have to allow unsigned extensions; set `xpinstall.signatures.required` to false. To hide the default tab bar I needed to put the following in ~/.mozilla/firefox/xyz123-profile-here/chrome/userChrome.css #TabsToolbar > * { visibility: collapse; } Some features, like autohide, aren't available with the new web extensions model, but otherwise works the same as pre-57 versions of TST. It would be better to choose a simpler add-on, such as the ones recommended by the Tree Style Tab developer at http://piro.sakura.ne.jp/xul/_treestyletab.html.en, in the section “Similar or Related Extensions”. > I want a simple vertical tab, without tree features. > Vertical Tabs (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/108862/), VertTabbar (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/8045) or Vertigo (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/1343) can do it. Tree Style Tab has lots of bugs for me, like permanently hiding the navigation bar after I exit full-screen, and scrolling all the way to the bottom of the tab list whenever I restore a closed tab. I still use it because I love being able to organize my tabs hierarchically, but if someone only wants vertical tabs, they should choose a simpler add-on that is less likely to have bugs.

Tree Style Tabs were released for Firefox around 2007 https://piro.sakura.ne.jp/xul/_treestyletab.html.en#history I am not sure if someone like Opera was earlier, but Arc is likely copying this.

> Tabs on the left and right edges of the windows work much better, because text is wider than it is tall, so you can fit a lot more tabs, and actually read their labels. Yes, I find that more than a handful of tabs at the top of the page are hard to use. The wonderful "Tree Style Tab" add-on for Firefox puts your tabs in a tree at the side of the page: https://piro.sakura.ne.jp/xul/_treestyletab.html.en The hierarchy represents parent-child relationships between pages: if you open a page from another page, it becomes that page's child in the tree. You can drag tabs around to rearrange them, collapse/expand/close subtrees, etc. It's one of the very few add-ons I can't live without (the others being uBlock Origin and uMatrix).

His dev post with a LOT of detail is linked: http://piro.sakura.ne.jp/latest/blosxom/mozilla/extension/treestyletab… Any other if one can donate to him?

I'm the interviewee and here is my raw opinion: http://piro.sakura.ne.jp/latest/blosxom/mozilla/2017-12-07_firefox-qua… (*Note: written in Japanese, very long article.) As I wrote in the article, indeed I worried about death of addons in last 2 years. But, from various viewpoints I analyzed Mozilla's statements around addons, and finally I decided to forget past and shift my mind moving toward to make things better. So the story of the interview is almost correct.

The http://piro.sakura.ne.jp/xul/_suspendtab.html.en extension also help keeping cpu and memory down when using lots of tabs. (of course when a tab become suspended the state is at least partially lost)

I saw World Polio Day XKCD Comic, which wasn't the usual extra joke but is certainly accurate and appropriate an ALT tag. Possibly because I have a FireFox extension just for those, actually: http://piro.sakura.ne.jp/xul/_popupalt.html.en Anyway, thanks Randall and Mr Bill!

"Tree Style Tab". http://piro.sakura.ne.jp/xul/_treestyletab.html.en At least that's the one I use.

I'm running version: 2011031901 This link: http://piro.sakura.ne.jp/xul/xpi/confirm.cgi?treestyletab.xpi gives me: Forbidden Installation You don't have a permission to install XPI package directly from other websites. You have to access this extension from the home page of itself. Am I doing something wrong?

Apparently there is a Firefox plugin to do split panes: http://piro.sakura.ne.jp/xul/_splitbrowser.html.en

This is exactly what you want: http://piro.sakura.ne.jp/xul/_treestyletab.html.en I have been using this for a few weeks, and it's wonderful.

The Tree Style Tabs author is quite active[1]. I knew, he had a really great, and funny, site[2] for XUL lovers out there. I was about to make a snarky comment about how filthy rich should he be, based on how TST is always praised everywhere, so I went to look for a donation button to link to my planned snarky comment. I didn't find any donations button, so I dug a bit more and found this[3]: 'I am an incumbent IT engineer, but apart from my company's work, I'm serializing articles in the manga format entitled "Cis Tube Girls" in the monthly magazine on Linux related technology called Nikkei Linux.' Seriously, check this comic: http://system-admin-girl.com/about/ I love Firefox, Tree Style Tabs, Google Translate, and the Internetcetera. I love you Piro, thanks!!! Tree-style tabbed browsing makes tree-traversal style web browsing far more tractable. Sadly, Chrome doesn't have a tree-style tabs mode, nor can it be provided by the existing Chrome extension format. There are a number of tree-style tab extensions for Firefox (e.g., "Tree Style Tab": http://piro.sakura.ne.jp/xul/_treestyletab.html.en). There are any of a number of changes to the browser model I'd very much prefer aimed at information management, as opposed to the web-applications centric focus of the past several years. In an interesting departure, Kobo advertised among the features of its (Android-based) tablet a web browser which simplified pages to an easy-to-read view. Based on present pre-loaded apps bundles, it looks as if that was the Pocket browser, but I still find it interesting that this was pitched as a benefit to a largely nontechnical, literary audience. It certainly reflects my own growing dissatisfaction with present-generation browsers.
